Could you give up heels forever?

I'm seriously considering giving up heels, and chucking all of mine away. I really hate them, and I find it's one of the reasons I dislike wedding and christenings etc because I'm so uncomfortable.

Why do we wear them? Is anyone out here brave enough to never wear them? Can you attend a wedding in a lovely dress and flat shoes? Which ones? I don't ever see women doing it so would feel the odd one out and feel ridiculous.

I don't wear them to work and I'm so comfortable in flats, brogues etc and it's lovely.

Night out or wedding/posh event and I'm in agony can't walk properly. Attended a posh do this weekend and almost threw my shoes when I got in I just wanted them off.

Another flat shoe wearer here. Was pondering today how many women on here have foot problems that means they can't wear completely flat shoes, suspect most of those are actually due to wearing heels.

The only man I've ever know to have foot problems they were due to circulation issues and he was in his 80s. In comparison I was told by someone only 3 years older than me on here that she needed cushioned shoes that had a slight heel because she was getting old and had aches and pains in her feet.

noodlezoodle · 16/07/2018 19:38

I used to be devoted to my heels but gave them up about 3 years ago because they'd started to make my back and knees hurt. For weddings or posh occasions I have a couple of pairs of suede point-toed flats from Boden that are comfortable but stylish (although the ones they have in stock at the moment are a bit more eccentric).

Someone up the thread recommended the En Brogue blog - definitely worth checking out, she has some great recommendations.

So spent an hour last night and an hour today looking for pink or navy peep toe flats to go with the similar dress for above.

Nope - Not a sausage anywhere.

Where is this mysterious place you all buy your flats??

Just clicked those two links thanks thedevilinblackdress if they were peep toe they would be fabulous.

These wouldn't work would they? Too casual?

They still have a bloody heel though!

I don’t wear them either - on holiday I wear pretty sandals and flip flops and would wear pretty sandals to a wedding

I do have a few pairs in the cupboard for maybe an xmas night out but I’d take flats and change for dancing!! I hate being uncomfy

RollonSeptember2018 · 16/07/2018 21:13

So what do you all wear to a wedding?

RollonSeptember2018 · 16/07/2018 21:15

These are what I need, they don't exist!!

I can only find them on Google images not on an actual website Sad

I never wear heels, can't bear the way I feel in them.

reallyanotherone · 16/07/2018 21:23

I haven’t worn heels for 20 years. Even before that it was rare- mainly because my mum sees flats as “unfeminine” and all bur refused to be seen with me if i wasn’t “dressed”.

I don’t consider myself brave Hmm. I’m just someone who cares more about comfort than what other people or society think i should look like.

I find it very strange on tv when female police officers and dr’s are trying to carry out their jobs in 6” designer heels.

I wear flip flops- wedding attire is usually a maxi or long dress with leather decorative flip flops. Most weddings are in the summer. Doc martins or trainers, and kickers/hush puppy style plain shoes for work.

princessbear80 · 16/07/2018 21:45

Next have a pair of silver peep toe flats at the moment that would look nice with a dress. Can’t link at mo.

Snog · 16/07/2018 22:03

I haven't worn heels since I was 30.
When I look at women in heels I never think they look good, just really WEIRD.
I think it makes as much sense as Chinese foot binding tbh.

Heels are worn way less than when I was a teen in the 80's. At that time school girls wore heels as did most women at work. Court shoes were normal daily wear for older women too.

Navy will be hard to find this time of year. A nude will go with anything and without seeing the dress I'd also suggest a tan.

For my own wedding I'm having heels for the day and some lovely sparkly flats for the evening

OP New Look have some navy suede flat pumps.

I've found that New Look are honestly the best place for Navy. One of their people must like it! It's so hard to get anywhere else but they always always have navy shoes.

WhereAreWeNow · 17/07/2018 10:29

I hardly ever wear heels anymore. Not since giving birth 11 years ago. Maybe once in a blue moon for a wedding or a date and even then it's a low heel. It's partly because of painful bunions but I also just can't be bothered. I feel less safe walking home in the dark in heels knowing that I can't run properly. I feel off balance. My feet always hurt at the end of the day if I wear heels. Really, I just don't see the point anymore.

Do it OP. Give them all away to charity. Maybe keep a favourite pair for the occasional wedding or whatever.

JemmimaJ · 17/07/2018 11:00

Special loads of shops do Size 8 A's standard. Some do Size 9.

specialsubject · 17/07/2018 11:37

thanks - but last time I tried the 8s were really 40s (too small) and there were no 9s. I have had new walking shoes recently, needed a size 9 but there I can buy from the bloke range so that's ok.

I don't think my feet have changed but someone has been dicking about with sizing.

not a problem, have the smart ankle boots needed for funerals and that's the only smart occasion I attend now.

soulrider · 17/07/2018 13:44

I almost have, I have succumbed to buying a few to go with outfits I've bought for weddings but really ought not to bother as I tend to end up barefoot round about mid-afternoon!

Workwear is my latest challenge, seems to be cropped straight trousers everywhere teamed with heels. Ideally I'd wear shoes and socks but I've got to find the trousers to allow that to happen!

MistressDeeCee · 17/07/2018 13:58

I wear block or wedge heel sandals or shoes with padded insole, for special events. If not padded enough then I'll buy a padded full-length insole. 2-3 inch heel. I need a bit of a heel to make me feel glamorous.

I nearly always carry sparkly flats to change into if necessary. I don't wear heels at all day to day, just pretty flat shoes/pumps, and trainers occasionally.

So no, I couldn't give up heels for a night out but feel fine as I'm only wearing occasionally. I'd cry if I had to wear them regularly.

RollonSeptember2018 · 17/07/2018 18:42

I was obviously thinking the same as you and was searching ASOS last night. I'm also a size 8 and so many shoes are out of stock.

So hard to find 8s and New look don't have peep toe just normal flats which look a bit like work shoes. Pretty much what I wear all day.

Without a peep toe or a bit of sparkle they don't look like occasion shoes. There is not peep toe shoes in ASOS or Debenhams, or New look or H&M in a size 8. It's ridiculous.

Someone needs to start up a website for flat shoes!!! Clearly a gap in the market.

I had to give them up, rheumatoid arthritis. Glad I spent years tottering round in heels before the RA got me. There are some really lovely flats out there though.

taybert · 17/07/2018 22:42

I think flats are so popular now that no one would look twice if you wore them to a wedding or similar event. I’m comfortable in heels generally and like the way they look in certain situations but there are so many nice flat shoes too!

schnubbins · 17/07/2018 22:47

I had to give them up after having my ankle joint fused.I loved high heels I have never worn stilettos but loved high heeled shoes and boots I couldn't actually walk in flats for years because of the position my ankle joint was in after a fracture and ensuing joint erosion. I have still got a wardrobe full of beautiful shoes that I will never wear again and I am slowly giving them away.I can only wear trainers now and some sandals .Dressing up is not half as much fun and I have had to change my style of dressing completely. Some flats are just so hard and unbendy so they are not an option either.

Bramble71 · 17/07/2018 23:50

Due to worsening arthritis in my feet, I was forced to give up wearing heels years ago. It's only at times where heels would go better with an outfit, e.g. for a black tie function, that I really miss heels.

Unfortunately, flats aren't that sexy and finding gorgeous flatties is nigh on impossible. I think I compensate with a lovely handbag collection!
