Could you give up heels forever?

I'm seriously considering giving up heels, and chucking all of mine away. I really hate them, and I find it's one of the reasons I dislike wedding and christenings etc because I'm so uncomfortable.

Why do we wear them? Is anyone out here brave enough to never wear them? Can you attend a wedding in a lovely dress and flat shoes? Which ones? I don't ever see women doing it so would feel the odd one out and feel ridiculous.

I don't wear them to work and I'm so comfortable in flats, brogues etc and it's lovely.

Night out or wedding/posh event and I'm in agony can't walk properly. Attended a posh do this weekend and almost threw my shoes when I got in I just wanted them off.

I’ve never worn heels regularly, feel like I never really learned to walk in them hence would wear them once in a blue moon and hate them , and they’re so uncomfortable.

So now I dont wear heels, ever. For about oh, 9 years? Pretty and comfortable sandals for summer weddings and job done. Plus I can dance and enjoy myself afterwards!

DunesOfSand · 15/07/2018 17:27

I class an inch as a very high heal for very special occasions.
I got married in flats.
So, yes. I coukd happily never wear heals, but it's not exactly giving them up.....

Maria1982 · 15/07/2018 17:28

PS I did use to have a ‘what will they think if I don’t wear heels’ self doubt when I was younger (earlier twenties), but really no one cares! As evidenced by comments on this thread, being comfortable in ones own skin and confident in wearing flats is more important.

I like some heels on other people but never wear them any more. I think the vast majority of women in the very high heels these days look utterly ridiculous when they are trying to move in them.

I have a lovely pair of metallic flat sandals that go with everything for parties, mary-janes for work and have re-embraced ankle boots for the winter - Hotter ankle boots are the nicest things they do IMO.

LockedOutOfMN · 15/07/2018 17:38

I went to a wedding last month in very hot weather (we live abroad) and I wore glamorous flat sandals with a new pedicure. Didn't feel underdressed.

My friend, who is, admittedly, recovering from a broken ankle, wore gold leather loafers. Another friend was in kitten heels, as was the bride. We have evidently, all, reached that age.

To another formal event last month I wore wedges which are not as comfortable as flats but not in the same league of pain and potential injury as proper heels.

Am 51. Have never worn heels in my life. So uncomfortable. They often look good on other people but they're not for me.

AdelaideK · 15/07/2018 17:40

I gave heels up a couple of years ago and I'm 5 foot 3.

I don't feel like I should be taller so who cares.

SeraphinaDombegh · 15/07/2018 17:40

I haven't worn heels for three years - after having DS2 my diastasis recti was pretty bad, and I learnt that even low high heels put pressure on that area and prevent it from healing, so I swore off them indefinitely. I've compensated by investing in some FABULOUS flats to wear for special occasions from Irregular Choice. They always draw lots of compliments when I wear them and they are so much comfier than heels. www.irregularchoice.com/womens/flats.html

I'm 38 and have never worn heels. They're not comfy and I don't see the point of torturing myself because society expects me to have longer legs than I have.

Greenteandchives · 15/07/2018 17:43

I love heels. Most of mine are 4”, and as long as I can wear them, I will continue to do so. I sprained my ankle once (wearing flats) and asked my physio for exercises to ensure I would get my heels on again.
They make me feel tall and elegant, and my dresses look better with heels.
I don’t wear them that often, but would be upset to give them up.

rainbowsandfeathers · 15/07/2018 17:44

I use to wear them for special occasions then I broke my ankle and found them to uncomfortable to wear. In summer I now wear sandles or pretty flats and boots of different lengths in autumn winter.

Clionba · 15/07/2018 17:45

I never wear heels. I'm only 5ft 2ins but don't care. I can't stand discomfort, plus I like to walk. I've got loads of lovely flats, animal print, floral, metallic etc. All with a good sole to save the knees and back. I sometimes wear lowish wedges. I just don't understand why women cripple themselves.

specialsubject · 15/07/2018 18:36

long gone but high heels for me were two inches, not the fugly staggerers which are all you can buy now. and as I am size 8 I cant buy anything except boots or trainers,.so no option anyway.

NicoAndTheNiners · 15/07/2018 18:40

I haven’t worn heels since I was about 23. Would wear ballerinas for a night out or wedding.

Jenijena · 15/07/2018 18:44

I have one slightly wedged (maybe an inch and a half?) pair of sandals but they’re amazingly comfy. Apart from that I don’t think I’ve worn heels for at least seven years, and even then it was rare. I can’t see why I’d wear anything which would make me feel uncomfortable.

thricethebrindledcat · 15/07/2018 18:51

Why not give up - pain in the feet always shows in the face, and I am know by my face, to coin a phrase.

lifechangesforever · 15/07/2018 18:54

I don't think I've worn heels since I was about 25.. partly because DH is the same height as me so I would tower over him and I actually just hate them!

GrumpyOldMare · 15/07/2018 18:55

I'm 53,5ft 1" and haven't worn heels since my late teens. Hateful things.Give me a comfy pair of flatties any day....or bare feet!

Sitranced · 15/07/2018 19:11

I tried a couple of pairs in my very early clubbing days but couldn't dance properly so they sat in the wardrobe getting dusty.

I don't see the point, they hurt.

thedevilinablackdress · 15/07/2018 19:25

Have had some in the past. Always given away barely worn. Life is too short to not be able to walk/run/dance.
I know some people can walk in them elegantly and without pain but they're pretty rare.

thedevilinablackdress · 15/07/2018 19:35

A very small wedge or block heel is do-able, say 1-1.5 inches

n0ne · 15/07/2018 19:57

I've never worn stilettos in my life. I will occasionally wear a 2-3" block heel or wedge but that's my limit. I think people stumbling around in stilettos look ridiculous.

EdWinchester · 15/07/2018 19:59

I wear them, but rarely.

My dh is only 5'10 and if I wear heels I am too tall.

I wear them when out with the 'girls' but they cripple my feet.

happymummy12345 · 15/07/2018 20:07

I could. I never ever wear them anyway. I even wore ballet flats to my own wedding, so I'm damn sure I could wear them to someone else's.

UnnecessaryFennel · 15/07/2018 20:08

I never wear heels. Why on earth would I squash my feet into something that's going to cause me pain, disfigure my feet and give me back problems?

I feel sad when I see women tottering around on skyscraper heels. They look daft, and vulnerable.
