Could you give up heels forever?

I'm seriously considering giving up heels, and chucking all of mine away. I really hate them, and I find it's one of the reasons I dislike wedding and christenings etc because I'm so uncomfortable.

Why do we wear them? Is anyone out here brave enough to never wear them? Can you attend a wedding in a lovely dress and flat shoes? Which ones? I don't ever see women doing it so would feel the odd one out and feel ridiculous.

I don't wear them to work and I'm so comfortable in flats, brogues etc and it's lovely.

Night out or wedding/posh event and I'm in agony can't walk properly. Attended a posh do this weekend and almost threw my shoes when I got in I just wanted them off.

I could never completely give up heels. I'm short, so I do like them to make me feel taller, especially at work. I love wearing them with a skirt because they do make my legs look longer. I don't think any of mine are uncomfortable. But then I don't buy larger than a 2"-3" heel these days, and try to go for things like wedges and platforms that make them more comfortable. I also wear cushioned insoles with them.

Mostly day to day, I wear pumps, flip flops, converse or boots with a low heel. These are more comfortable for walking and running around with the kids. But for work and nights out, I still love my heels.

Special I agree about sizing. I'm a size 8 but about 15 years ago I noticed that's Marks 8s didn't fit. It was when it changed to 42 instead of 8. I think half a size was lost in the change over to European sizing. I haven't been able to wear a size 8 in Marks since. Some Next fit me in 8 some 9. I find New Look get too wide in bigger sizes as I'm narrow footed. Clark's is good for 8.5 and 9

I’ve never worn heels. I don’t consider myself brave though, what an odd thing to say. They are just shoes.

Kind of. Never wear them now, haven’t for about 18 months (back trouble). Really haven’t missed them. Gave away most, kept a couple of pairs for sentimental value/as aesthetic objects.

But...bought a pair of Hasbeens in a sale last month. Tiny heel, it’s mostly the thick sole. So I can feel like a grown up out in the evening on holiday.

Never wear them anymore.

Haven’t worn them this year, slipped 2 discs at the start of the year and have worn flats ever since.
I’d like to get back to them though because I like the extra height (I’m not short so this doesn’t really do anything for me other than make me taller than dp!) and the posture it forces me into. I feel more elegant in heels and I’ll wear them again when I feel comfortable and brave enough!
However, not currently on the agenda as I am planning on spending the summer holidays in flip flops Grin

Haven't read full thread but for a summer wedding I'd be looking for pretty sandals.

I'm hoping heels will go out of fashion eventually as I've never understood why women voluntarily compromise their ability to walk.

OP are you still looking for flats? Thought about you today when I read En Brogue's post about why she doesn't wear heels. Would these work?

I’ve completely stopped wearing heels. They’re ridiculous things that increase your risk of falling over or getting hurt. You’re effectively hobbling yourself for the sake of trying to look more appealing. Never in a million years would you catch men wearing such uncomfortable items of footwear. If you feel the need to look taller then a wedge is elegant without looking ridiculous, but there are so many lovely loafer or brogue style shoes that there is no real need. Try the Red or Dead range in Schuh.
