I need help breaking away from Breton style tops!

I go to my wardrobe to take out a clean top ... breton, breton or breton. Oh wait, let me check down the other end ... more stripes! Help. I’m 50. I live in jeans and bretons. Please, lovely people save me - I need prints, something but what? Would any lovely, stylish ladies like to link to some interesting, pretty tops which aren’t a breton? Thanks!

So do I so watching with interest ....

Squirrelfruitandnutkin · 20/06/2018 21:35

My name is squirrelfruitandnutkin. I am a stripe addict.
It has been 5 days since I last bought a stripey tshirt.

CoconutAmericano · 20/06/2018 21:39

Omg this is me. I have six breton tops and a stripey tee shirt. I need a to break out and wear other cotton tops that go well with jeans. Im actually bored of my clothes

SporkInTheToaster · 20/06/2018 21:40

I live in stripes too, not just Breton but stripes of all kinds. I have to force myself to STEP AWAY FROM THE STRIPES when shopping. I gravitate towards them every time.

NackeredMom · 20/06/2018 22:10

OMG, fellow addicts, I am not alone. But you’re not helping! Don’t enable me to purchase yet another striped top, bring out the links for alternatives!

Marking place (though I have some stripey shirts too...)

MISHGS · 20/06/2018 22:13

I'm 'navy print' obsessed..... I walk around clothes shops silently chanting "step away from the navy print, step away!"

Griefbacon · 20/06/2018 22:34

It’s so hard to find any other pattern which is nice though. If it’s not dresses with tiny vaginas on them (John Lewis dress?) or hideous big floral it’s tricky.
But the plain and nice is hard to find. I love a Breton

Notcontent · 20/06/2018 22:45

Me too!!!

Ski40 · 20/06/2018 22:52

Not sure if everyone's cup of tea but I love this! It's just so different 😍

IwankaTramp · 20/06/2018 22:57

Wearing them with dungarees is an update...

LunaTheCat · 21/06/2018 08:49

Bretons rock! Short and big busted so best with boat neck but such a classic look!

PiggeryPorcombe · 21/06/2018 08:59

I bought some tops last week and the cashier said “ooh you like your stripes don’t you”. I was wearing a stripy top and buying two more Blush

PamsterWheel · 21/06/2018 09:02

Dress with vaginas on????

TokyoSushi · 21/06/2018 09:15

Joining! Here I am, sat in a stripey Joules Breton, skinny jeans & Supergas! Blush

RoseWhiteTips · 21/06/2018 11:43

Bretons and all stripes ooze class. Don’t change a thing!

PiggeryPorcombe · 21/06/2018 12:54

Pretty sure my £5 Tesco stripy tops don’t ooze class Grin

ThenCameTheFools · 21/06/2018 13:05

I am staring into my wardrobe...8 Seasalt bretons and 2 Boden.

I am moving away from my stripy safety net (thanks also to the lovelies on the looking expensive thread) but I'm still mainly plain navy and white up top!

AsTheMilesTheyDisappear · 21/06/2018 13:18

Shirts are good this year. Lots of vertical striped and prints around

NackeredMom · 21/06/2018 14:38

You lot are no use ... you all love your bretons amd stripes! Actually so do i but I had a thought the other day .... ‘Nackered, you’re 50, you’re too old for stripes every day of the week’! Today’s is an old Seasalt number of which I am very fond.

Right, I’m off to the expensive thread and JL website after the schoolrun!!

Haha, we are a bit attached, aren't we?

RWT is correct though- they are timeless classics. I was saying on the Expensive thread that 31 years ago, when au-pairing for a rich Spanish authoress- I was a Bon Jovi style university student and there she was, fabulous- and invariably in a breton top, classically cut jeans or white trousers, and tan loafers. Not many things can hold up to time like a stripey top!

(if anyone feels they don't have enough- the Joules outlet on ebay has 20% off until tomorrow, so you can get fab quality ones for about £17 delivered!)

Racecardriver · 21/06/2018 15:39

Fat face and white stuff both do nice non stripy tops that Bretton addicts are often amenable to. Seasalt do as well but do a lot of Bretton tops so you may struggle to go in there and leave without stripes

ElinorCadwaller · 21/06/2018 15:49

Look, Emmanuelle Alt says she basically always wears the same thing. So do many other stylish people. You always wear the same thing. Therefore you are stylish /logic

Maverick66 · 21/06/2018 15:55

Yep! I'm 51 every casual top I own is striped.
Clothing manufacturers seem to think us 50 something ladies love striped tops with 3/4 length sleeves.

ThenCameTheFools · 21/06/2018 16:30

I loathe 3/4 sleeves. I remember (am 53) when suddenly everything was 3/4 length sleeves. I am 5ft 10 with gangly arms so they just look "too short" on me rather than like they are supposed to be like that!
