Help me find an engagement ring

NC for this but I need the collective knowledge of mn.

I need to find an engagement ring. Want something unusual. Yellow gold. Not only diamond (or unusual diamond like a triangle) and I've been looking and cannot find anything I like.

Budget can be big (like 15-20k) but I'd like something cheaper as I really am not comfortable wearing something that expensive on my finger. Ideally I think around the 5k mark would be the highest I would go as there are many holidays I would like to spend the remainder on.

Anyone for any suggestions?

Why not visit a jeweller and commission something?

(Jeweller casually miffed that most people who say they want something unusual and yet leave with halo solitaires on a daily basis.)

For my money- I love a good sized rose cut vintage diamond. I'd have it in a target style setting (google target ring)- probably with sapphires.

helpmefindaring · 17/06/2018 22:28

Sorry. Should have mentioned. Went to look at jewellers today and came out totally uninspired. The only thing I saw that I liked with a emerald and diamond ring set at an odd angle to each other. Nothing else.
Made me consider not getting a ring at all...

Thanks for the suggestion. Looked at the style and that isn't me at all. I don't like smaller stones around a big stone (if that makes sense!)

If you want yelliwto gold, then your best bet is to head to an Asian jewellers in Wembly, Southall, Leicester, Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester or Green st in Upton park.

Just go and look and see what's available, don't buy anything straight away and expect to haggle as they'll raise the prices because you're not their usual customer.

Flaminglingos · 17/06/2018 22:31

Wouldn't it be better to buy something cheaper and save the money for the wedding rather than a holiday?

helpmefindaring · 17/06/2018 22:40

@Flaminglingos yes. I think so.
Hence the 5k mark rather (or lower.)
I also own quite a bit of nice stuff and I've said let's just call one of those the engagement ring but he's not keen
He really wants to get me something fab.
Plus we're just going to go to the registry office to get married and then have a party at a pub so he wants to do this properly.

I really love a lot of the rings stocked at Tomfoolery - lots of yellow gold options there and most aren't the standard engagement ring type.

MyGirlDaisy · 17/06/2018 22:49

Would you consider a vintage ring? Independent jewellers often have some antique jewellery that’s a bit different. I do understand that some people don’t like the idea of it though!

London Rocks - Karl Karter. He will make you something unusual and beautiful for that price fairly easily I'd say. Check out the London Rocks Instagram and his own Karl Karter one.

Thanks everyone
@MamaJaye those rings are beautiful. Just what I'm looking for. The long diamond (as in shape) one is fab. I wonder if I could get that made with a different stone?
Some great ideas

Birmingham jewelry quarter will have both a lot of choice and people who can design one for you.

helpmefindaring · 18/06/2018 08:48

So far my favourite! I wonder if there is someone in London who does a similar style?

Where are you? If you could get to Brighton, the Lanes area (as opposed to the Laine area) has loads of jewellery shops catering to every budget and many of them sell antique and vintage pieces. Because there are so many shops in one small area the prices are very competitive and most of them can resize on the spot.

A day out browsing and then having something to eat or a glass of wine on the seafront while adjustments are made could be very romantic. I bloody love Brighton.

Have a look at Alex Russell jewellery

There are many smal independent jewellers who use Etsy as their storefront. That's where I ended up getting my wedding jewellery from. Whilst I didn't have your budget, like you I did want something less conventional. I ended up with this sapphire in platinum.

OP now you've found what you like, maybe try taking the pic to a jeweller and have them make it for you? They can discuss stone options with you as well.
