What do fat people wear?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/06/2018 18:05

I’ve lost my way a bit, I’m very fat and living in jeggings and t-shirts and quite frankly boiling in this heat!

I’ve been looking at what other mums in the playground around my age and size and loose/lightweight patterned trousers with a plain top seemed popular so I’ve got myself some against my better judgment. They’re pretty loud and not something I’d usually wear but thought I looked ok. That was until my kids saw me and pissed themselves laughing. Argh!

What the hell am I supposed to wear??!

@WaitrosePigeon - I really like those dotty dresses - did you buy that specific one (having been ripped off like a fool for £50 last month by some tempting online shoe brand that sent from China I'm a bit wary!). Also I'm a 16/18, what size did you buy? TIA!

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 12/06/2018 18:59

I’m a 14/16 top and 16 bottom. I’m 5ft 5”. So far, this summer, I’ve worn jeggins and loose linen shirts. Not very exciting but I’ve felt comfortable. As a side note, I have jeggings from next I. A 12 a 14 and a 16 😐

sprinklesandsauce · 12/06/2018 19:20

All summer I wear cropped linen trousers, usually buy from Evans around £20 a pair, have them in a variety of plain colours. This year I have gone wild and bought a flowery pair from Simply Be. I have bought some lovely floaty tops from Simply Be too. They are not cheap though!

I also wear long cotton tops, with either sleeveless or tiny cap sleeves with very lightweight shrugs to cover my arms.

WaitrosePigeon · 12/06/2018 19:23

^Chips*, yes I got one. I’m about a 20, but don’t like my dresses too tight so got a 22 or 24, can’t remember. Looks lovely on!

SadieHH · 12/06/2018 19:28

Do none of you have massive calves though? I can dress for my fat (size 20), more or less, but would love to wear dresses except my humongous calves shouldn't ever be seen and I'm only 5'2 so maxi dresses look crap. Otherwise those dresses look fab.

makeupmaven · 12/06/2018 19:37

I wouldn't write off your printed trousers outfit altogether, OP. I was horrible about my mum's clothes when I was kid - it was just mean-spirited childishness.

I think the most important thing for larger ladies is to not go too tight or too flowy (although I think this stands for smaller sizes too). A fitted top with a maxi skirt or wide-leg trousers will look great. Skater dresses (fitted on top, loose skirt) will look great. Get a hair and makeup routine sorted so you can feel a little more together. Just don't go for any tent dresses or clubby bodycon dresses and you will be fine. Remember that no one's judging you as harshly as yourself! Smile

Kenworthington · 12/06/2018 19:37

My calves (and bloody cankles) are big, apparently because skinny jeans make them ache and I can’t get boots on. But it matters not if you’re wearing a frock, or super stretchy stuff. Like a Pp I also have next denim jefgings they’re lovely and so comfy

RockinRobinTweets · 12/06/2018 19:42

I think with a pear shape you’re better to go with a block colour on the bottom and then a pattern to accentuate the slimmer top half. Do you have bigger hips but then smaller legs?

The sizes you say are very much average so I wouldn’t feel too huge OP, be kind to yourself!

madcatladyforever · 12/06/2018 19:48

I am large of bottom and I like layering, sleeveless tops with kimonos are my current favourite and very cool. Lots of kimonos and other nice flattering tops on Fashionworld online.

HeyLittleRichGirl · 12/06/2018 19:48

Hi OP
I'm the same size as you. I'm wearing these two dresses at lot ATM
Also wide legged linen trousers with fitted tops

I don't think black leggings are good if you feel the heat and it's a hot day. For heat, you need something very loose like those big dresses African women wear.

chipsandgin · 12/06/2018 19:50

Thanks @WaitrosePigeon - just got one!

WaitrosePigeon · 12/06/2018 19:50

Ah great Chips.

My calves aren’t that bad to be honest and I’ve got good ankles..

Hayls17 · 12/06/2018 19:51

I’m size 18 and always in skinny jeans, a chiffon vest top (sometimes plain sometimes patterned) and floaty kimonos to cover arms

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 12/06/2018 20:03

@WaitrosePigeon thanks for that link, I have ordered one too! My problem with dresses is my fat knees, I need a dress to be below the knee and so often they are too short.

WaitrosePigeon · 12/06/2018 20:05

Ontop, yes these go past the knee. Little sleeve for fat arms. Billowy so nice and airy and cool. I love these cheap eBay dresses, there are hundreds of them and I always get nice compliments.

2up2manydown · 12/06/2018 20:07

I think black linen or cotton dresses look very chic in the summer. I used to think black was only for winter but I’ve seen lots of women recently (of all sizes) really rocking black dresses in the day time. Off the shoulder is especially nice if you can manage a strapless bra - which I can’t!!

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 12/06/2018 20:11

I'm going to search for more nowGrin Every Summer I try to find the perfect dress with no success, this may be just the one! Thank you.
Hope you've got some ideas OP, Summer is hard when you're bigger, I speak from experience Thanks

Oly5 · 13/06/2018 11:28

Size 18 is very fat though isn’t it? It’s an unhealthy size.
But the OP actually asked about clothes not whether her consideration of her size offends anyone!
Have you tried M&S for their simple swing dresses (about £15 and in lots of plain colours)? Or can you find a good maxi/midi skirt that you can wear with simple cheap t-shirts (again, M&S are good for these)?

veryveryquietly · 13/06/2018 12:27

Jockey Skimmies slip-shorts/underwear (on Amazon) are fabulous for the summer. Very lightweight, wash well and easily (and dry quickly if you want to handwash them).

Not cheap, but they make it easy to wear dresses and skirts without worrying about inner thigh rub or being exposed if your dress/skirt blows up.

As for fat knees and calves, really, no one is looking at them as much as you think they are.

Pebblespony · 13/06/2018 12:30

I completely agree with the pp that said kids are reacting to something different on you, not how it looks. Maybe try it out on someone a bit more mature whose opinion you trust.

goose1964 · 13/06/2018 13:14

today I'm wearing navy spotted harem pants and a mid blue t shirt & navy wedges when I went out.

Monday, last day I went out , pretty top and tiered maxi skirt

amazonianwoman · 13/06/2018 15:23
