Shirt dresses

I'm looking for a couple for the summer. Cotton, simple, proper shirt collar, slightly fitted/belted.

Am happy with knee-length, a bit above, midi. Will go longer at a push. Short, mid or long sleeves.

Darker/brighter colours preferred. I generally like prints and stripes too.

I don't think that's too much to ask. But can I find anything, or are they all polyester, viscose/crumply linen/impractical white/tacky florals/covered in arsing frills/thigh-skimming in length/fecking potato sacks from places like Toast? Go on, have a guess Grin

Can anyone suggest anywhere? Budget is high-street: sub-£75 ideally. Could push boat out to sub-£95 at a pinch.

I don't think I've seen any cotton ones...all polyester type stuff (which I prefer if I am honest). Hopefully someone can recommend somewhere that sells them soon! Have you tried ASOS? They normally have a bigger range which encompasses all ends of the quality spectrum I find.

bassackwards · 07/06/2018 12:53

Have you looked at Cos? Sounds like something they would have

DarlingNikita · 07/06/2018 12:54

No, good call, I'll look at ASOS. Thanks!

Esprit have a selection:

DarlingNikita · 07/06/2018 13:13

Thanks! Some of the Cos ones are a bit... Amish, but I like the stripy one.

People Tree usually has a cotton shirt dress or 2. La Redoute also has cotton ones cheaper than People Tree.

DarlingNikita · 07/06/2018 13:39

Good ideas, thank you.

I got a navy one from Boden that I like. It is made of a cotton broderie anglais fabric.

AgFilleadhAbhaile · 07/06/2018 14:07

Depending what style you like, I am wearing this today. They have it in plain red and a bright check too.

DarlingNikita · 07/06/2018 14:13

AgFilleadhAbhaile, thank you, I love some of the prints on that site, but I don't think the full 50s style really suits me. I'm tall with glasses and feel that they make me look a bit too much like Grayson Perry or a woman from a Far Side cartoon!

Seasalt have lots of cotton dresses, although most of them are not shirt style. This one might be OK:

DarlingNikita · 07/06/2018 14:24

Ooh yes, forgot about Seasalt!

The Boden one is sleeveless, Apples. I know that as I tried it & it is gorgeous fabric but sadly didn't fit me.

Djangor · 07/06/2018 14:29

Forgot to say that Boden does have other cotton shirt dresses with sleeves - within budget when you knock off the standard 20% discount that should be around.

Djangor · 07/06/2018 14:34

Uniqlo also has some - and the JW Anderson one is reduced to £30. It does look rather like a night shirt to me, but then some shirt dresses can look like canteen uniform when I try them on, Sorry for all the mini posts - I love shirt dresses so am on a permanent hunt for the perfect one.

I could have sworn I posted, Mango has a few cotton striped.

some shirt dresses can look like canteen uniform when I try them on Grin I think this about me too. I still like them though. I think my natural style, for better or worse, is more Nurse Ratched than perky 50s cheesecake.

Member, thanks for that. I wouldn't have thought of Mango.

Mango has some lovely ones.

NotMeNoNo · 07/06/2018 15:08

Woven fabric or jersey?

DarlingNikita · 07/06/2018 15:16

Not jersey as it's clingy. I want crisp breezy cotton. I really like the texture of... is it seersucker, or waffle? Sort of dimpled-looking?

Winser do a cotton poplin shirt dress. Jaeger also good for tall people. If you search on the house of Fraser website, they have lots of reductions.

Thanks!
