Mascara Recommendation

I am going to a wedding in August, so will be wearing make up for the first time in years ages. I am out of the loop on what brands to look at.
So, I need a good lash lengthening mascara and one that won't run.
I know you are supposed to throw them out after 6 months , so would prefer not to spend a fortune
Recommendations please !

Charlotte Tilbury does wonders on my stubbly lashes: One coat and they look really long and thick :) When I looked at the reviews they said it flakes but it hasn't flaked with me. It's around £25 so I'm not sure if that suits your budget.

bookbook · 01/06/2018 09:35

Thank you -not heard of that brand - and £25 is fine.
I notice its only in black - I am red hair/fair skin so was thinking of brown, or is that old hat now ?

I have mayabelline colossal mascara. It's only £7.99 it's all I use. Everyone compliments on my eyelashes

StringandGlitter · 01/06/2018 09:49

I’ve found www.beautyandtheboutique.com really helpful as I didn’t have a clue about makeup and she does great video demos.

It’s a bit pricey but I’ve been really pleased with all the products I’ve bought from there. I’m not on commission- honest.

I got the Blinc mascara they recommend in dark brown as I wanted something more natural, but she’s got some volumiser ones on there too.

3dogsnorth · 01/06/2018 09:52

Clinique is good. I've got one that you can turn the tube so that you can get light, medium or lots of mascara. It was about £20 but only comes in black. Also used natural collection volume at under £3 in brown and liked it too. Worth a try

HyacinthsBucket70 · 01/06/2018 09:54

Don't touch Charlotte Tilbury with a 10 foot barge pole. Worst mascara (and make up) I've ever bought. It's Rimmel quality at designer prices. Read the reviews for the Legendary lashes further down the lists! I spent over £100 on the strength of MN recommendations and even my teenage DDs refused to touch it, so it went in the bin, it was THAT bad. I personally think she has people posting on here, no offence to the previous PP.

I prefer Clinique, Urban Decay and Dior. You can get Clinique from quite a few discount sites online like allbeauty.com and feelunique.com.

bookbook · 01/06/2018 09:56

Thank you - I used to always use Clinque eye make up when i wore contact lenses , many years ago , so I know that works for me :)

Benefit They're Real is fab.
But I love Nyx Doll Eyes a bit more at the mo!

Sorry, having posting troubles!

Benefit They're Real is fab.

However, Mac are great for samples....I got a mascara which is bloody brilliant it's the 'In Extreme Dimension' one. So if you want to spend no money at all, I'd suggest going to a Mac counter and asking for a sample to try, I said I had sensitive eyes, which is true, so needed to test before committing to purchase. The lady was very accommodating and gave me foundation samples too. I'd defo buy a full size.

Another one for benefit They're Real here. I've had people stop me and ask where I've had my lash extensions done, it's magnificent stuff!

ladymabel · 01/06/2018 10:18

The soap and glory one wirh the gold wand - a good dupe for the YSL fake lash mascara.

bookbook · 01/06/2018 12:17

Great tips thanks - have had a benefit lipstick before now.
I can see a day out mooching at the beauty counter coming some time soon :)

Dior Pump and Volume. I am a bore about this on mascara threads, but last summer my boss popped out for an hour and came back and I thought she'd had either a tint, or extensions and went "my god, where have you been to have that done, I want some!" What she'd done was tried this mascara. I'm now on my 3rd tube and don't think I'll change till they discontinue it.

I've tried Benefit They're Real but it was gloppy and I became a panda in about 10 minutes. I suppose it's all down to what works for you, but neither that or Lancome Hypnose that people rave about on here, did anything for me.

Hyacinth (sorry for brief hijack) I had some foundation samples from CT that I thought were amazing- I loved them. So I bought the full bottle. Totally, totally different from the samples. The sample left me with perfect skin, glowing, velvety. The FB sat on my skin and had me rocking a Barbara Cartland dry, cracked chalky face. I ebayed it.

Deathraystare · 01/06/2018 15:44

I remember once seeing a close up of her face on tv - blimey - cake central. She also kept lowering her lashes a la Diana and you could see powdery turquiose shadow all over her lashes! My aunt passed heronce outside a hotel - in a puff of pink!

HyacinthsBucket70 · 01/06/2018 16:33

ThenCameTheFools I'm glad I'm not the only one!! It's a complete mystery to me how that stuff sells........

stoplickingthetelly · 01/06/2018 16:53

I too think Charlotte Tilbury is style over substance. If you're going to spend that much on make up there are far superior brands. For mascara at the more budget end I would go for either the gold soap and glory one or maybelline lash sensational (pink one). At top end I absolutely love lancome hypnose. I have just converted a friend who who was a die hard Chanel fan.

BagelGoesWalking · 01/06/2018 17:39

My daughter likes the Glossier one as it's non clumping. You have to order online - she also likes the cloud paint blusher and says Boy Brow is great.

BagelGoesWalking · 01/06/2018 17:40

Meant to add that a lot of ppl seem to rave about the Wilko Essence mascara (I think that's what it's called). Very cheap so worth a try?

Mueslibox · 01/06/2018 17:45

YSL babydoll in brown is holy grail for me - big long lashes, but very easy to put on with no need to comb out clumps or separate or anything.

SheSellSeaShells · 01/06/2018 17:55

I've been using benefit 'they're real' for a while. They recently brought a new one out called bad gal bang.... wow it's amazing and I've switched to this .. long and thick lashes!! Benefit also sell little mini versions of their make up for about £10.50 in boots so you can buy a mini one to try first

frogprincess84 · 01/06/2018 18:05

Double check the details on this because I'm not 100% sure on end dates etc, but I got an email from benefit a few days ago about a "mascara amnesty" - take an old mascara to any of their counters and they give you a free fun size of one of theirs. Obviously they will be tiny but it would let you try them out a few times to see if they suited you.

bookbook · 01/06/2018 18:37

wow, thanks for all this - I like the idea of a mascara amnesty frog , and the mini size from benefit :)
I am hoping to get to a big JL with a decent number of beauty brands in a couple of weeks time.
So
Benefit 'They're Real'
YSL Babydoll
Dior Pump and Volume
Clinique
and see if I can blag a free sample of a Mac - never tried that brand

Maybelline lash sensational is amazing! Get it in waterproof and it'll hold a curl better
