I very rarely wear dresses as I hate my figure but have a 40th birthday bash to go to in July.

The birthday girl, her friends, and family are all very glam and just a bit posh so I don't think my usual skinny jeans and top will cut it.

The do is at a naice riverside pub and hopefully the weather will be nice.

Would this dress be suitable for a 5'3 size 14 big bellied, big calved pale as the moon 38 yo? Also could I wear it with smartish flat black sandals?

I think the cold shoulder trend is well over now, so whilst it's a pretty dress, it's not really posh or glam. Especially in black.
It's suitable for a riverside party and will distract from any belly. So on balance, a yes?

I know what you mean about the cold shoulder trend but my shoulders are quite nice so that's why I think this jumped out at me.

It's a nice dress. Just a note though, it looks like a strapless bra would be needed (or a v. small bust)! Agreed that it should distract from a rounded belly though.

No to the cold shoulder. If you have good shoulders (I used to have!) go for a sleeveless dress

The Oasis stripe dress is lovely and much more classy. Less is more.

I think it's horrid. Cheap and fussy. If you're not a dress wearer I can see it might be hard to pick one. But I'd go for 'smart casual' separates.

I don't like it either OP, sorry. I haven't really seen a cold shoulder top/dress that looks particularly stylish, although I'm sure they must exist! I also dislike the poms poms and I'm sure you can find something better.

Sorry but the cold shoulder thing is just horrible. I know you're not allowed to say 'chavy' on here because it causes much offence to those who are prone to being offended about pretty much everything. However this just screams 'chav' to me.
