How to Look Expensive (in the summer)

Please can we resurrect my favourite EVER thread, but with a summer twist?

I think I'm pretty stylish in cooler weather but struggle in the heat.

I know the usual drill ..natural fabrics, linen cotton silk in neutral colours. Light tan courtesy of gradual tanner. Tan real leather sandals. Straw or heavy cotton beach bag. No gaudy colours or prints. No bra strap showing under vests.

But I still feel I don't look as good as I could if I tried a bit harder! I get freckly and I think that stops me looking expensive!

Please tell me your tips and stories of fab expensive looking stylish people you've seen on holiday

I want these but they are £180 - anyone seen something similar - Ilike the strap around the ankle and the simple design.

I think a FITTED drape and skim is my aim!!

Super trendy places like Cos and Hush aren't good for my body shape. I'm petite and have a small waist. Their tops are wider than they are long and make me look like I'm wearing a pillowcase with holes in it for arms!
I think they are great if you have long legs and arms but maybe a bit of a tummy

Was in primark earlier to get a unicorn floating pool chair ( as you do)
They had a linen section , it was so rough looking like it would cut you! Like hessian

They had some white pure cotton strappy nighties and cami/shorts sets that were pretty though , very thin but good for the heat

Their 90p flip flops are the softest I've ever had. Never rub. I get the plain white. Only worn poolside/beach of course Smile

Diamond I have been wanting one of those strappy nighties too but whenever I go in they only have tiny or huge sizes, nothing in between Sad

Collywobble I really like those sandals - particularly as they still look flat but have more support. I think the S&B 'looking expensive' mantra for sandals is that they have to be tan leather, flat and minimal looking - ie not loads of straps and tassels, etc - so I think they tick the boxes!

Uniqlo for linen and 100% cotton. Their navy balloon sleeve 100% cotton blouse looks great tucked into everything, saw me through a sweaty summer in Rome, and was like £15.

I think plain clothes with statement mango earings helps you look like a woman that shops at COS on a primark budget...

I wonder if those M and S sandals would cover a bunion. Bunions do NOT look expensive

mtpicasso · 17/05/2018 15:21

I spent this morning shopping in Oxford St. I had a coffee in John Lewis and did some people watching. I came to the conclusion that to really look expensive you have to be slim (as I sat shovelling cake into my mouth....). I was enthralled by one woman who stood casually chatting on her phone as she had perfected the expensive look - skinny indigo coloured jeans, tan and gold sandals, a slouchy cream coloured jumper, tan handbag, swishy blonde hair and sunnies on the head. She looked fabulous.

Interestingly I saw much better dressed people in JL than Selfridges.

Laiste · 17/05/2018 15:28

BadTasteFlump - sorry Grin

I've worn those tan Fitflops all day today. (Mostly clambering about on the mounds of earth around our building site of a garden organising a concrete delivery, not anywhere chic!) and they're as comfy as an old pair of slippers!

Going out now and keeping them on!

Jonbb · 17/05/2018 15:36

What about these? They are almost exactly the same as the Toast ones last season or the season before which were very expensive. These are £25, I'm not a fan of Next but I like these.

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 17/05/2018 16:10

I have the fitflops in tan and black.

Maybeicanhelp · 17/05/2018 16:31

I'm not sure if this meets the brief, but I've just bought this from Primark, £8. It's 55% linen and 45% viscose and it looks lovely on. I got the coral, to wear with white or light blue denim jeans or my chino shorts. It is available in white too. I'll report back on how well it washes, diamond.

I'm going to be married in August. It's going to be a really small wedding, just my partner and two witnesses.
It will be my third marriage. I'm 57, size 16 but hope will be size 14 by then if I stay away from the wine aisle.
I was a size 10 three years ago but life the bastard stung me to comfort drinking.
My partner and I have been together 19 years, he's doing it for the romance, no, he is, honest! I'm doing it for the practicalities.
We both want it to be as quiet as can be and only want smart, casual clothes that we will wear again.
I have a loft wardrobe full of wedding guest frocks that have only been worn once, first wedding at 19 was full monty, 2nd was hat and frock, determined this time, the last time, to do it casual, simple and 'strolled in off the street' style.
Do you fashion buffs have any ideas?
Money -within reason- wouldn't be a problem.
My legs are pretty fucking stonking good but I don't wear dresses in RL so would prefer capri style slacks, don't like bright colours apart from a tasteful small, single shot.
I seem to love silvery grey.
I have pretty feet, they're my best feature, but cannot be arsed to wear high heels, I walk like Dick Emery if I teeter on

BadTasteFlump · 17/05/2018 16:57

Ooh planet if I were to get married again I would wear a fifties style dress - something like this. But I appreciate your taste may be completely different to mine!

BadTasteFlump · 17/05/2018 16:58

Ok just saw you actually wrote 'strolled in off the street'... so I'm way off Grin

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 17/05/2018 17:05

Grin and would wear again, not shove in the loft. But thanks, so much, for even thinking and responding. Smile

Maybeicanhelp · 17/05/2018 17:18

Planet, maybe a top like this one, a nod to wedding style and skirt like this. With silver sandals and clutch purse.

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 17/05/2018 17:25

EEK! I definitely should have said I'm an apple.
I'm going to be awful and say I don't like any suggestions, aren't I?
And anyone that does respond is going to hate me.
Sorry Blush

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 17/05/2018 17:35

Does this mean that my idea of some nice grey capri slacks, gorgeous not yet designed or made seen grey top/blouse/fine sweater and some silvery gorgeous flatish sandals, is the wrong idea?
Oh.
Fuck.
Tut.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/05/2018 17:38

That sounds lovely ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3

BitOutOfPractice · 17/05/2018 17:40

But I think it'd be a shame to wear trousers if you have good legs. I think a soft dove grey is gorgeous

BadTasteFlump · 17/05/2018 17:44

Ha ha, well up to you, but if you like grey and are an apple shape (so a bit curvy?) how about this

Yes I'm way off the mark again - but I love a bit of glam and i'm having fun Grin

Maybeicanhelp · 17/05/2018 17:46

fedup2017's post on page 3 -

this cotton dress www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-uniqlo-u-100pct-cotton-3d-crew-neck-balloon-short-sleeve-dress-406667.html
It's pure cotton ,hangs really well, looks FAR more expensive than it costs and can be dressed up or down. Given it covers flesh it's surprising ly cool.

It comes in a lovely silvery grey Smile.
