How to Look Expensive (in the summer)

diamondsandrose · 11/05/2018 15:27

Please can we resurrect my favourite EVER thread, but with a summer twist?

I think I'm pretty stylish in cooler weather but struggle in the heat.

I know the usual drill ..natural fabrics, linen cotton silk in neutral colours. Light tan courtesy of gradual tanner. Tan real leather sandals. Straw or heavy cotton beach bag. No gaudy colours or prints. No bra strap showing under vests.

But I still feel I don't look as good as I could if I tried a bit harder! I get freckly and I think that stops me looking expensive!

Please tell me your tips and stories of fab expensive looking stylish people you've seen on holiday

This thread is awesome and will definitely help with my summer overhaul as I have a wardrobe sort out.

I have had a few compliments on some outfits this summer even though they are clothes that I had worn in previous years. The difference is I have started tucking in shirts and t-shirts, something that I have avoided doing ever since I was told I had to at school.

Like a few PPs I have big boobs but a small frame so floaty on someone tall and lithe looks tent like or swamping on me unless it goes in in the middle.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good leather (preferably tan) belt and also preferably totally adjustable without holes?

LoveManyTrustfew · 14/05/2018 15:01

Great thread, thanksStar

Also, one of my summer style heroes is a friend who exclusively dresses in white, tan and denim during the summer, usually with some gorgeous wooden or gold-coloured jewellery.

She always looks chic because she owns the look and looks totally comfortable and effortless. She also swears by white because she can bleach everything to keep it looking pristine. Those colours would never work with my pasty complexion though.

diamondsandrose · 14/05/2018 16:11

Love the sound of only wearing white denim and tan.

Anyone got any summer perfume recommendations? Someone upthread mentioned Hermes. I had Terre de Hermes aftershave once as a perfume and I loved it.

I'm not keen on "summer" editions of perfumes as they tend to go sweet and tropical, like fruit juice..!
I think in warm weather you need something fresh and "cool"
Anything not with a Hermes price tag could be good too....

On the school run drive home I passed a very pale red head wearing a simple, perfectly cut navy blue jersey t shirt dress and tan flats. She look stunning and I wished for red hair.

Sizing on those oasis vests is quite roomy shutup. I am a 34F and fit comfortably into a 10 when am usually a 12 due to boobage. I think the style is meant to be very baggy but I want it a bit fitted. I wish I hadn't looked them up now as just seen they have green which is a new colour so just ordered 2 Grin.

bagel

Those trousers are from here but they are a US brand & not sure if they have the exact ones still.

I had Terre de Hermes aftershave once as a perfume and I loved it.

That’s my signature scent!

I have just bought Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Aqua - to me it is summer in a bottle. For everyday I also like Clarins Eau Dynamisant in the hot weather

Wear colour! Bright ones. Invest in nice pair of sunglasses.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/05/2018 18:10

This thread is making me want to spend ££££. Stop it! Grin

I have this Next linen shift dress that I bought a couple of years ago. I always get compliments when I wear it.

user1498332336 · 14/05/2018 18:11

And have a nice bright, shiny mani/pedi.

ThenCameTheFools · 14/05/2018 18:23

Summer perfumes (I am on the long running perfumista thread so I may be some time Grin)

Eau d'Hadrien- Annick Goutal- citrus and a touch of cedar at the end. It smells like holidays to me
Eau du Sud- Annick Goutal - still citrus, but a sharper lime hit at the beginning
Jade -Yardley- don't mock, it's incredible, costs about £7 and is not dissimilar to both Eau du Sud and Chanel Cristalle
I am also fond of Chanel 19 in summer as it's another crisp one. (am wearing it today)

I agree with the "summer" versions of things being a bit "pink minger" as we call them on the perfumista thread, and although I do like Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder and Beach by Bobbi Brown, neither are going to win any "smells expensive" awards.

Bel Respiro by Chanel, Sel Marin by Heeley, all the TF citrus stuff are all nice, but £££s. Perfume Parlour do very good dupes of the TFs. Atelier Cologne also do a lot of summery citrussy stuff along the lines of TFs and Jo Malones, (you can get a sample set with loads of phials from the website- don't ever buy a full bottle though- they're colognes, like JMs so not worth the hefty price tag)

If you're near a big M&S they have good perfume sections- Fragonard, Shay and Blue- good classy citrusses that won't break the bank like the Emperor's New Clothes that are the TFs and JMs.

ThenCameTheFools · 14/05/2018 18:24

I forgot O de Lancome, and Eau de Rochas. And Fidji. (In keeping with this thread, I remember, as a teenager of about 16, sitting next to a lady on a plane who bought some Fidji from the duty free trolley. She was dressed in a white shirt and navy trousers and had a sleek bob and I remember thinking how good she looked)

diamondsandrose · 14/05/2018 19:06

Fantastic ThenCameTheFools

Thank you! A fresh summer scent with longevity is difficult

Eau de D is a long forgotten favourite! Might ask DH to bring me one from the airport one week ( he flies every week ha far for duty free 👌🏼)

Will definitely check out yardley Jade, I bet they have it at my little old lady style chemist shop !

I like Versace Versense for daytime in summer or Chanel Cristalle eau Vert. I've also just bought Dyptique Philsykos for my holiday in Greece which smells like fresh figs and lots of green leaves- very different!
For evenings I like something with heady white florals like Tuberose, Jasmine, and Gardenia and coconut- Datora Noir by Serge lumens is nice.

Tatapie · 14/05/2018 20:09

Love this threadGrin
Back to tan sandals , I can't do them! I'm a winter, I know some winters are but for the purists - which of these ( if either!) look more expensive.. please

@Tatapie love the first ones.

AuntyElle · 14/05/2018 20:47

You will be white as a ghost but smooth as glass.

Erm, who are you talking to?

IcelandicWarriors · 14/05/2018 20:50

Not sure if it has been asked but how do you wear a vest with no bra straps showing? I hate strapless bras.

AuntyElle · 14/05/2018 21:01

IcelandicWarriors See Oasis vest top a few posts up.

chloechloe · 14/05/2018 21:37

Thanks tipsy! I'll go for the 10!

Bejazzled · 14/05/2018 22:08
