Bank Holiday Wardrobe Clearout

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 08:56

Currently my bedroom is in a horrific state. Clothes and shoes everywhere. My wardrobe is similarly horrendous.

I regularly find myself using precious holidays in an attempt to declutter / sort but never seem to get the job finished.

Determined that tomorrow (Bank Holiday Monday) will be the last holiday spent trying to sort the bedroom of doom.

Anyone out there to chum me for tomorrow's marathon? I am aiming to post a pick of the finished decluttered wardrobe for accountability.

I have made a list of things I love and plan to cull to 150 items including shoes, scarves, belts etc. I'm not including underwear, nightwear or sports clothes in that figure. I know that's still a lot compared to Project 333 but I think it's realistic for me. It will be the kick start to a year's shopping ban during which time the number will hopefully reduce further, then I will go for a strict one in , one out policy.

It's my 49 th birthday this week and I want to have a year of sorting my shit out, house, excercise etc so I feel I've made a lot of positive changes before reaching 50. I would love to live in a more minimalistic, eco way I the next decade.

I'm in. Moving house in a few weeks and need to declutter!

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 09:11

Thanks Fosco. Good to know I'm not alone.

Today I will gather bin bags, cleaning stuff and make a spotify playlist to keep me motivated . Up with the lark tomorrow as it really is pretty bad...

The rest of the house is clean and organised. The bedroom looks hoardish. I'm sure a psychologist could have a field day with that!

I did this last weekend. You really have to be in the humour, don't you? I was sick of opening a packed wardrobe and stuffed drawers while at the same time moaning that I have nothing to wear 🤔 sick of buying poorly thought out (usually cheap) tops that don't really suit me or go with my other stuff.

Between us, DH and I had 3 bags for charity shop. I also have a bag in utility room so as I have done laundry this week, I have popped stuff (I no longer want) from dryer/airer straight into bag, instead of it ending up back in wardrobe.

This weekend, I went through some of the have used toiletries /cosmetics and made a start on those!

AnarchyKitty · 06/05/2018 09:32

I did this yesterday. Four laundry bags of clothes now sitting in the spare room to be taken to the clothes bank in the village. I was ruthless!

HoosierDaddy · 06/05/2018 09:33

*half used. Once again, my phone makes a holy show of my spelling.

AnarchyKitty · 06/05/2018 09:35

Next I need to tackle the toiletries. I have baskets of stuff/gift sets from Christmas/Birthday presents that I will never use that I will donate to the food bank.
Then next weekend I aim to clear out the kitchen drawer of doom. 😂

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 09:38

Hoosier - I completely relate to the cheap top issue. That's great you've even got on to the toiletries. I'll need to save that battle for another day.

Anarchy - I'm going to try to channel your ruthlessness! Smile

I'm on call for work today and this thread has just got me to clear out my drawers! Thanks!!

HoosierDaddy · 06/05/2018 09:45

Toiletries leave me perplexed. I don't know how to dispose of half empty jars/bottles. The recycling voice in my head tells me I am destroying the world if I just bin them. How do I get rid? They are in a bin bag at the mo, but not made it out to the wheelie bin

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 09:52

Where I am we have plastics bin for recycling. If your LA doesn't pick them up as routine, do they have a plastics recycling area at your local dump?

Butternut , I am glad my slovenliness has had at least one positive outcome Smile

Oh we do recycle! We're pretty good at doing it normally. I mean the shitty dregs of lotions and potions... the plastics need to be clean and empty. So, do I pour/scrape them into a bin bag, and recycle the container? Actually I have probably just answered my own question....

AnarchyKitty · 06/05/2018 10:00

KarenfromFinance
If I don't take it to the clothes bank today it will never leave the house and just creep back in my wardrobe so don't applaud me just yet!
I WILL DO IT TODAY! I WILL! Grin

We have just this minute finished the loft. It's taken 3 of us (student dd was bribed to come home and help!) to empty, clean, de clutter the bloody thing. We took 96 boxes down Blush, less than 10 have gone back up, and that includes all the Xmas stuff. We had prams, cot, crib, playpen, highchair etc etc up there. My youngest is 21. All my university books and notes. I graduated nearly 40 years ago! Even though we can't actually see the result of our labours, the house feels so much lighter without 30 years of crap pressing down on us. I have my eye on the garage next (I did my wardrobe a few months back, and am currently in the middle of the long slow ebay slog with that).

ilovecherries · 06/05/2018 15:16

Although yesterday morning I was all teary eyed and cooing over first shoes and hospital bracelets, by this morning, the boxes were coming down and heading straight out the door with no more than a cursory look at the contents.

Gingernaut · 06/05/2018 15:32

You know what?

I've got a few bits to get rid of, too....

wrongway · 06/05/2018 15:36

@ilovecherries well done! I need to do the same. Can I ask where you took everything? Tip? Charity shop?! I want it all to go to good homes where possible / be recycled but it seems it will take forever to do that for each thing. Thanks.

WipsGlitter · 06/05/2018 15:40

I'm planning on doing this too. Putting some stuff away for winter (I hope) and seeing if / where my wardrobe gaps are. I unearthed a pair of shoes last night I'd never worn!!

goose1964 · 06/05/2018 15:43

I did some the other week and found stuff I've forgotten I had. Need to do my wardrobe as I've run out of room and stuff is living on the floor

ilovecherries · 06/05/2018 16:27

wrong, everything that the charity shop would take went there. Anything they didn't want we took to the recycling centre. There were only a few things that had to go into general waste, which I was pleased about.

CoolCarrie · 06/05/2018 16:33

Gingernaut it’s the pink monster from M & S!!!

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 16:46

Anarchy : hope that stuff is GAWN Smile

Ilovecherries : that is seriously impressive. I hope I am even half as productive tomorrow. One day we will tackle the garage!

Ginger looking damn fine

My husband says he thinks I need a flamethrower for the bedroom to clear the clutter Shock Always supportive!
