Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good SPF base to go under make up. I've yet to find anything that is ideal. I have oily/combo skin. Got a sample of dermological dynamic skin moisturiser SPF50 - I wanted to love it but it makes my foundation look shit. I am trying to avoid anything with the dreaded chalky look or white cast but this seems impossible. The Biore one from Japan is great but not perfect and its not the best base - great for the price though.

There's loads to choose from here on cult beauty www.cultbeauty.co.uk/skin-care/sun-tanning.html - that has all the spf creams, but how the hell do you pick, they aren't exactly cheap either so I don't want to make an expensive mistake. Again.

Thank you!

I really like the Body Shop one - I think it's called Skin defence and it's SPF50. It's ~£16 I think.

eggsandchips · 24/03/2018 20:25

Hi @MyRunMyPace I've tried that one - white bottle? It wasn't any good for me sadly but thank you.

MyRunMyPace · 24/03/2018 20:35

Oh no, that's a shame - I really like it.

MyRunMyPace · 24/03/2018 20:36

And Yes, it's a white bottle.

adagio · 24/03/2018 20:58

I use eucerin even brighter - it’s not too bad, but I’m following this thread in case any better recommendations come up.

I also recently bought a Gatineau uptime tinted correction cream with spf30 and it seems pretty good both in its own and under Estée Lauder double wear, or Laura geller baked foundation powder.

eggsandchips · 24/03/2018 22:15

@adagio - I'm not looking for anything tinted - I was going to go for Sarah Chapmans offering but apparently that is tinted argh! Otherwise I'd give Gatineau a try. Will look at eucerin.

Considering this one.. www.cultbeauty.co.uk/dcl-ultra-light-hydrator-spf-30.html bloody expensive though!

@Myrunmypace I know. I was gutted. So reasonable too..

Paula’s choice super light wrinkle defence spf 30. The only tilted moisturizer I’ve used that doesnt add any shine, it’s the best.

Mrstwiddle · 25/03/2018 05:50

Sorry, just saw you don’t want tinted!

Fullfatlatte · 25/03/2018 09:28

I know ideally you don’t want tinted but get a sample of Clinique City Block spf40. It’s tinted but it’s very sheer & doesn’t change my foundation. They do an spf25 aswell & I think that isn’t tinted 😀

Fletch80 · 25/03/2018 11:31

I use Estee Lauder Day Wear Oil Free, it has SPF25. Not cheap at £45 but a pot lasts ages and they might give you a sample at the counter.

MyRunMyPace · 25/03/2018 12:50

What about UltraSun's facial SPF? I haven't tried it though.

eggsandchips · 25/03/2018 15:11

Thank you all. Will get googling these tonight. I've honestly been looking for something decent for years. Even the Armani spf primer is crap!!

I've mentioned this one on a couple of threads, but it's a recent discovery and I think it's marvellous - Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturiser (the same lot who make Liquid Gold). It's SPF50, and when you first dispense it, you think it's going to be all thick and white, but it blends in really well, to a lovely matt finish. Not cheap, but M&S sell it, and they have regular 20% offers.

Marv1nGay3 · 25/03/2018 16:14

I have got the ‘Thank you Farmer Sun Project light sun essence’ from Cult Beauty. I like it - it’s very light and not remotely chalk like!

ElspethFlashman · 25/03/2018 16:17

I got a tube of the Alpha H one in the MS beauty box last year and it was indeed very pleasant. Too pricey for me though.

Im currently using the Bioderma Cicabio spf50 and its completely clear.

eggsandchips · 25/03/2018 16:30

Thanks! Do any of you have oily/combo skin? If you do and you like the things you suggest (well of course you do!) then one of these might work!

OP posts:
eggsandchips · 25/03/2018 18:20

I've googled the lot.

It's between; Alpha H, Estee Lauder and Thank you Farmer.

I'm not totally sure Alpha H will be any good for oily skin though. So really I think its between Estee and Thank you Farmer.

@Marv1nGay3 and @Fletch80 - do you have oily skin ?

Thanks so much to everyone. I'll let you know what I get and then report back!!!

I would say I have combination skin although now I am late forties it is less oily than it was. I definitely don’t have dry skin, though.

SukiTheDog · 25/03/2018 18:45

Seconding (or thirding 😊) Clinique City Block SPF 40. Yes, it’s tinted slightly, bit very sheet and doesn’t “roll” if you wear something on top.

Fletch80 · 25/03/2018 19:04

I've always had really oily skin so never bothered using a moisturiser at all until I hit my forties. A beauty therapist told me that even though my skin looked greasy it was actually quite dehydrated. I tried a couple of cheaper moisturisers but they just brought me out in spots.
The Estee Lauder can easily last me eight months or more, but I'm not slathering it on thickly, I just dot it on. For that reason if it's really sunny and I'm going to be outdoors a lot then I do use a proper sun cream (Boots do one designed for the face, high SPF)

eggsandchips · 25/03/2018 19:11

Thank you everyone. My budget picked Thank You Farmer which won the day at £27. However should this be no good, I will go to Estee.

I've ordered from cult beauty so will report back.

I love this board. My favourite on the site. Folk are so nice :)

@sukithedog you know what, its all so marmite this whole thing - I doing get on with Clinque CB at all - and you and other ladies have said they love it! I've tried so much stuff, the worst was probably Bobbi Brown's offering. I think its just a case of trying and hoping one day you get something thats as good as you are going to get. I have to say the Biore cheap one from Japan - for the price - is good. But its not ideal for oily noses.

eggsandchips · 29/03/2018 09:46

It's arrived. Testing today 😊

OP posts:
eggsandchips · 29/03/2018 10:19

It's really patchy at the moment - but I may have been daft to put moisturiser on first. I will attempt with no moisturiser!

OP posts:
CallarMorvern · 29/03/2018 10:28

I'm using this, definitely no whiteness, it also comes in spf 50, but I'm using the 30. It's a decent price at £8.

I'm 48 and have fairly sensitive combination skin.
