Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good SPF base to go under make up. I've yet to find anything that is ideal. I have oily/combo skin. Got a sample of dermological dynamic skin moisturiser SPF50 - I wanted to love it but it makes my foundation look shit. I am trying to avoid anything with the dreaded chalky look or white cast but this seems impossible. The Biore one from Japan is great but not perfect and its not the best base - great for the price though.

There's loads to choose from here on cult beauty www.cultbeauty.co.uk/skin-care/sun-tanning.html - that has all the spf creams, but how the hell do you pick, they aren't exactly cheap either so I don't want to make an expensive mistake. Again.

Thank you!

The hunt continues : I'm returning the farmers market stuff as it makes my make go on patchy and nasty.

Biore Aqua watery Essence (does contain some alcohol, so maybe not for drier skin).

  • Nivea Water Gel spf 50 - huge bottle, good value. Gel- like so disappears into skin.
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios facial mist or ultra fluid lotion
  • Etude House Mild Airy Finish SunPrise spf 50
⁃ Missha All Around Safe Block Soft Finish Sun Milk SPF50+/PA+++ (70ml) COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF50 PA+++, 50ml ⁃ Canmake Tokyo Mermaid Skin Gel SPF 50+ PA++++

Simple do a fab SPF30 day moisturiser and I think it's only about £6!

melt001 · 30/03/2018 06:50

I have been using Clarins UV+ spf50 for a few years now. I find it a really good base for make-up and have no problems using it on my combination skin.

eggsandchips · 30/03/2018 15:31

Thank you everyone for your help. I am returning the Farmer's product tomorrow. Incidentally @melt001 I picked up the Clarins SPF 50 last night when I was in London. I tried it in the shop and I knew it was a good one for my skin type. I've tried it and its the best I've used so I'm going to stick with that.

I really appreciate everyones suggestions and I hope this thread can help others looking for the ideal spf base for their skin!!!

I also took a reaction to the Farmer's product (I did with Dermologica's skin smoothing cream too). Just goes to show things work differently on different folk! I guess all we can do it try and not make too many expensive mistakes!

Thanks for this thread OP, it's been an interesting read.
I've been looking for a new one for some time and also have oily skin. I've used the LaRoche Posay dry touch one for a year or two but it does have a white cast to it. I'll try the Clarins one. Expensive so fingers crossed that it works ok for me!

eggsandchips · 30/03/2018 16:40

@LaBurraRioja I know - but it's really very good. Everything else - cheap and expensive- makes my make up look horrendous!

Let us know how you get on 😊

I've tried millions only repeat purchase and current one is dernalogica age smart spf 50

OCSockOrphanage · 30/03/2018 17:32

Heimish All Glow, which someone on these boards recommended a week or so ago. It's quite dewy but not chalky. A bit dearer than the Bioré but not devastatingly so.

gummywitch · 31/03/2018 22:48

I know you wanted SPF for under makeup but I discovered by accident that mixing LRP anthelios dry touch gel cream SPF50 with the tinted version, gives great coverage and dries to a lovely velvety matte finish. I bought the tinted version originally but found it too dark for my pale skin. So bought the non tinted but didnt like the white cast. Mixed the 2 on back of my hand and found a perfect match! Definitely recommend

Uhohmummy · 31/03/2018 23:07

I use La Roche Posay Hydra Phase UV Legere which is a moisturiser with spf 20. Works well for my combination skin.
I’ve been thinking of replacing it with the Alpha H spf 50 moisturiser for summer though. What was it about that one you didn’t like OP?

eggsandchips · 01/04/2018 14:43

@Uhohmummy the problem with the your farmers stuff for me was it went on really greasy and didn't skin in - but another poster likes it so I guess it's trial and error. The reviews on the product are generally good online but as I say you can't know till you have tried. The problem is you can end up making loads of expensive mistakes argh!

@Marv1nGay3 did you buy the pink of blue farmers SPF?

OP posts:
Marv1nGay3 · 01/04/2018 21:43

I bought the blue one but have just ordered the pink one too. I am really sorry that you didn’t get on with it. It seems as though you have found something that you like now, though- great! Actually I don’t really wear much foundation - maybe just a bit of foundation stick here and there or concealer so maybe that is why I didn’t realise it wouldn’t work with foundation. Apologies for steering you in the wrong direction.

Fosterdog123 · 01/04/2018 21:51

The Alpha H one is fab. Perhaps try from QVC so you can return if you don't get on with it.

Uhohmummy · 01/04/2018 22:05

Thanks both! I’ll pass on the farmers one then and try the Alpha H.

eggsandchips · 01/04/2018 22:15

@marv1ngay3 its not your fault! It looked like it was going to be the best out of the stuff people who saying, I'm 35 now though and I've NEVER been able to find something until I came across the Clarins on Thursday. I appreciate your contribution as I do all the others :)

Do let me know how you get on with the pink - I got the blue.

I am looking with interest, I have trouble with SPF face creams stinging my eyes and tasting too much like sun cream Hmm. Would love a big pot of blue Niva that had sun screen in it!

Whammy · 02/04/2018 11:06

I’ve just recently started using Bobbi Brown Protective Face Base as a primer under makeup. It’s SPF 50 but not at all greasy. I really rate it (but I don’t have particularly oily skin).

eggsandchips · 02/04/2018 15:18

@Whammy just shows you eh - I had that and it was by far one of the worse things I've ever used. I think it is all individualistic depending on skin type, skin tone and the actual make up you put on top!
