Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

I know what you mean too JD. I'm noticing some very fine lines this week and feel like I need something to give it some oomph! But I've been so careful and cautious because of the mild acne I used to get, that everything I now use is quite bland. (Apart from EH balm) I suppose it's a good thing that spots aren't my main concern anymore, it means they're under control, which was my initial goal.
After years of worrying about spots I need to reassess what my main goal will be now. Texture I think.

I just have an urge to use a manual scrub and slap lots of oil on. Which would be the worst thing for my skin but I want some glowyness!

Yes to rolled up jeans btw. Just need to find some tops that aren't t-shirts. I've ordered a couple of dresses and skirts to try.

SallieSallow · 22/04/2018 22:15

I thought it was quite chilly today (also in the north) I did have my jeans rolled up but I rarely wear sandals as my feet get too cold. I can't wear dresses either as apart from being stupidly pear shaped so they never fit me, I don't like the draft round my legs.

I'm just a very special extra cold snowflake Grin and I work in an office that's like Siberia with the arctic air conditioning so summer clothes are wasted on me.

EnidButton · 22/04/2018 22:20

I was by water a lot of today and the breeze was pretty chilly! Nice and warm in the sheltered parts though. I don't like it hot.

TantricTwist · 22/04/2018 23:04

Bloody chilly here down South, started off warm today then very much not.

I'm getting wow results but not entirely sure which of the products I'm using or have stopped using is causing it.

Anyway I haven't changed my routine since the last time I posted it.

My skin is smoother and clearer and thank god finally less red.

mintmagnummm · 23/04/2018 06:10

Yes JDSTER I'm another one who feels the same way! 😏

VillageFete · 23/04/2018 10:42

What a fabulous thread, i’ve got some reading to do....
Although not fully skincare related, I got some tear trough fillers on Saturday (for my darl circles) Unfortunately i’m not wowed with the results, particularly under one eye. The dark circle is still present! Although it’s definitely reduced under the other eye. I’m going to have to go back and ask can they correct it?

Can anyone recommend a non comedogenic SPF for my face? Definitely want one that won’t block my fairly big pores.

Pupsiecola · 23/04/2018 12:12

Hello,

I've taken a break. Trying to cut down screen time generally. I'm not going to pretend to try to catch up. Hope everyone's well and looking forward to participating again.

SophieLion · 23/04/2018 17:31

Hello Pupsie and everyone elseSmile
Hope everyone who was feeling under the weather is feeling a bit better now. Sorry to hear about your family member Enid Thanks

Does anyone use Bioderma eye make-up remover? And is it good for (very) sensitive eyes? Alternatively is there someone with sensitive eyes who uses another brand?

Thank you 🙏🏻

EnidButton · 23/04/2018 17:40

Saw this today and immediately thought of you lot. 🐌 (it was in tk Maxx if anyone actually likes it.)

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The One Where Sallie Swallows Dermaplaned a Lion Named Fabio
EnidButton · 23/04/2018 17:41

Thanks Sophie Brew Can't help with the eye makeup remover really although I have use a No7 one on the past that was very good. Can't remember the name but it was one of those ones you shake to mix the oil part with the rest of it.

JDSTER · 23/04/2018 19:12

I think I was being a bit negative yesterday. Sallie you put it in perspective actually as I don’t get spots at all now (didn’t get many anyway) and I think my skin is a bit brighter than it was and less ‘clogged’ generally.

Spookily enough pupsie, who has reappeared today, kindly sent me some medik 8 Vit C several months back and I opened it today - and today here you are Shock. I’ll report back on findings. It’s been sat in my fridge unopened and seeing as I was moaning about products yesterday, I asked myself why I was persisting with crap (imho) Vit C when I had a potentially great one ready to use.

Sophie I use Bioderma sensibio to remove eye makeup. It’s non oily so I find it gentle and doesn’t sting my eyes although I wouldn’t describe myself as having sensitive eyes.

In other news, it’s my birthday today. Another year older......
I had a nice lunch with a friend and DH bought me gift vouchers for beauty salon I go to and some aromatherapy associates rose hand cream. Also came home with some nice deli bits for tea from M&S and a chocolate fudge cake- yum Smile.

botemp · 23/04/2018 19:17

Is it the Bioderma micellar (Sensibio H2O IIRC), Sophie? I've used it in the past and usually have a travel size around. I have sensitive eyes but not extremely sensitive ones. I also like the Chanel bi-phase one.

I ordered the Frezyderm SPF 50 btw, it's the most unusual textured sunscreen I've ever tried. I find it difficult to gauge how many pumps to use though. I do like it, it feels like the furthest thing from a sunscreen. I don't use primers but I suppose that's probably the closest thing but it absolutely melts into nothing, it's quite bizarre.

Mint, I have the LM translucent powder. Like any powder too much of it dehydrates me so I use it rarely and very sparingly. When it finally runs out I think I'll buy the one Enid uses or one with HA in.

WRT wow products, I do think it's a case of the further along you are the more incremental the results. The only reason the Medik8 was a wow for me was that it managed to tackle dehydration in ways other products hadn't. On the Retinol performance front it'll be more of a wait and see exercise.

Happy birthday JD CakeFlowers

CognitiveDissonance · 23/04/2018 19:33

Hello, is this the right thread to ask about Dr Jart? I'm wondering if anybody has tried the creepy looking blue rubber hydration mask? Smile

SallieSallow · 23/04/2018 19:33

Happy Birthday JDSTER 🎉🍾🎁 Cake Wine Glitterball that cake sounds awesome!

Waves to Pupsie 👋 and how was Rome, did you buy anything in the end?

Village spfs seem to be bit of a minefield as what suits one person will break another out or make them too dry/too oily. I like bioderma (cicabio spf 50 and nude touch spf 50) avene anti ageing spf 50 is popular too and I think a few here are using la Roche posay Anthelios
Biore do some good under makeup friendly spfs but they have a fairly high alcohol content so too drying for some.

I'm looking into Botox at the minute but not tear trough fillers specifically as I don't have dark circles, I think Botox can take a bit of time to work so might be worth giving it a couple more days before contacting them or going back. I have no experience though.

Sophie I find all 'dedicated' eye makeup removers irritate my eyes, so I prefer removing eye makeup with a cleansing oil but I think that's on your Do Not Use list now isn't it?

Love that snail 🐌 🐌 🐌 Enid not going to purchase though.

I am thinking about trying a sheet mask though (with or without snails) if anyone has any recommendations?

I've just received a big tub of hand chemistry HA for body (QVC had an offer on) and it has almost exactly the same texture as the Vichy 89 so might try it on my face too, according to the reviews most people do. Am also liking the Superdrug Vit E spritz thingy which I'm using on my body, it is nice and refreshing and seems quite moisturising too.

SallieSallow · 23/04/2018 19:36

Hi Bo how are you feeling now? That frezyderm sounds good, I'm quite well stocked with spf but will put it on my possible future purchase list.

zoClueless · 23/04/2018 19:40

Happy Birthday JD - M&S deli bits and chocolate cake sounds lovely. Enjoy! Cake

EnidButton · 23/04/2018 19:49

A chocolate cake sounds very nice. All I want to do is eat today. 😯

botemp · 23/04/2018 19:57

Cognitive, I've not used the Dr. Jart ones but have used and love the original ones by Casmarra. I am planning on trying their new ones from Dr. Jart, the shake and shot versions as the Casmarra are a bit hard to get hold of at the moment.

They are kind of creepy, the Casmarra is used over eyes and mouth too, which is slightly disturbing and it feels quite cold. You have to work quickly and it can get a bit drippy... But skin comes out really bright and hydrated, would suggest patting in a good hydrating serum before applying. It is temporary though, lasts maybe a day or two so I've always saved them for special occasions.

Sallie, on the mend but not quite 100% yet.

Village, welcome. I'm not that knowledgeable about fillers either. I suppose there is always a genetic component to dark circles that may be at play, but I'd wait it out a few more days too.

Happy birthday JDSTER 🛍🎊🎁

Sophie if you mean the bioderma micellar water then yes I use it and love it on my extremely sensitive eyes!

Bo I tried some too faced born this way setting powder in the shop and it was lovely! Went to buy it but sold out and seems to be sold out everywhere online too!

JDSTER · 23/04/2018 21:24

Thank you all for your good wishes (which I invited of course by telling you it's my birthday Grin)

Good to see you back Bo.

village my skin is oily and I really like Biore uv perfect bright milk (bought on ebay from Japanese sellers- pink bottle) I haven't found it comedogenic and it leaves a lovely finish on the skin. If you've got dark skin it might not be for you. Anyway, worth checking some reviews to see if you think it might be suitable. Biore watery essence extremely light and non comedogenic. As sallie mentions, this one quite high alcohol content so may find drying. I've got both on the go at the moment but I prefer the texture and finish of the bright milk.

miffy2 · 23/04/2018 21:57

Happy B-day, JD! Hope you had a lovely day Cake Flowers

My DH turned 50 yesterday so we were all about birthdays here all weekend. AND, my close cousin became a grandmother today...same day as a royal prince was born LOL.

I got my Deciem order today with my lovely big pump bottle of Pro Repair hand cream. Bliss. It will live on my bedside locker. I will start using the Buffet + Copper soon and see how I get on with that.

I also went a bit makeup mad on SpaceNK over the weekend as they had £15 off orders of £60 or more. I may have placed more than one order Blush

TantricTwist · 23/04/2018 23:36

Happy Birthday JD 🥂🎁🦄💃

Sophie I have sensitive eyes.
I used Lancome bi-facil make up remover for my eyes and now I'm using Nivea double effect eye make up remover.
Which are virtually identical.

They are the only products that don't irritate my eyes when removing mascara.
I just put it on my cotton wool pad and gently press against my eyelid, no rubbing at all, and it just melts everything off.

TantricTwist · 23/04/2018 23:43

Pupsie I will be forever grateful to you for the Neostrata which has definitely kickstarted my skin into properly improving itself 😻
