Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. I really don't know why I'm breaking out so much at the moment!

Tantpoke · 10/04/2018 21:03

sallie I'm looking for an eye cream too, I have to say though for daytime my under eyes did actually stay hydrated after using the boi-oing stuff, I just need something for the evenings.

JDSTER · 10/04/2018 21:31

mint I can imagine that you did chase it up today Grin. Shame they don’t have both shades for you but at least you can test the formula.
Tant I’ve looked back about 8 pages but I can’t find the info about sea kelp. I obviously wasn’t paying attention when you first mentioned it and now I’m intrigued Grin

Tantpoke · 10/04/2018 21:52

mint hopefully the first ones will arrive, not sure why they would record sending a couple of small samples, so you could be in luck.

Jdster when I bought my Nars I tried out the Creme de la Mer and really liked it, Bo reminded me that AF sell Sea kelp coral which is similar to one of the main ingredients, so I bought it, its arrived, I've used it and I kind of like it, although it really does tighten your skin until you put moisturiser on top.

You can mix it in with products but I'm just applying it neat because its easier.

SallieSallow · 10/04/2018 22:04

JDSTER this is the sea kelp

Tant do you use it day and night or just daytime?

I've just thrown out some bo-ing as it was years old, I thought it was just a concealer though? I don't use under eye concealer as don't have dark circles but I do have lines and find concealer makes them look worse. I watch those YouTube videos where they're slapping on layers of concealer and setting with loads powder in absolute horror, my eye area would look like the Sahara desert if I did that.

peonylover22 · 10/04/2018 22:20

Still got too much to learn to be a useful contributor for a while, I’m afraid. So thank you all for helping and teaching me!
My LRP order arrived. I am now doing an evening double cleanse with the effaclar micellar water and the effaclar cleansing gel. I really like it and my face feels much cleaner. My clarins moisturiser had run out so I am trying the toleraine ultra one, but I don’t love it so far, it feels a bit greasy. Will keep going for a bit.
Still considering which SPF to try next. Got some samples from Space NK whilst I was buying shampoo - couple of shiseido ones and this Chantecaille one:
www.spacenk.com/uk/en_GB/makeup/complexion/primer/ultra-sun-protection-spf-45-pa-%2B%2B-anti-glycation-primer-MUK200006779.html
(Sorry I don’t know how to do short links Blush). The Chantecaille one feels very nice on my hand but it’s ever so expensive, and also calls itself a primer. Is it even a proper sunscreen?!
Failing that I’ll probably try the Avene one or Bioderma one.
Bo you asked if I was waiting a bit before applying makeup. Yes, put on a layer of moisturiser, wait 5 minutes, then sunscreen, then wait 10 minutes before makeup. Mornings are a bit of a scramble toddler wrangling session so I don’t think I can space it out any more. I’m then putting on Charlotte Tilbury wonderglow primer followed by a v light Charlotte Tilbury foundation. I know sunscreen can act as a primer but reluctant to say goodbye to lovely illuminating properties of the wonderglow...
Skin generally a bit crap at the moment, getting random spots here and there, and have just stopped taking lovely Yasmin pill which always keeps it under control, so fully expecting it to go a bit wild over the next few months Hmm

Tantpoke · 11/04/2018 01:09

sallie apparently the boi-ing I bought used to be called fake-up??

It's a concealer and eye cream in one. An inner circle of concealer and an outer circle of hydration.

I don't really need to conceal much but the concealer part really did brighten under my eyes and the hydration part worked really well so for me it's a winner. It's probably not for everyone but it turns out its perfect for my needs.

Tantpoke · 11/04/2018 01:26

Sallie I've literally only just got the sea kelp but I used it last night, this morning and again tonight.

It's wierd because it's really tight after application once dry, but I like it, probably because I have combination / oily whatever it feels like sometimes skin. Not sure how great it would be for dry skin.
I would use it instead of HA after a serum and before moisturiser.

My Nars TM stayed on fine today after it so thats good.

EnidButton · 11/04/2018 02:53

Having a couple days to get bit better. Brew Hope you are all ok.

mintmagnummm · 11/04/2018 07:53

JDSTER What gives u that impression of me? Grin

Right please can someone help me (I'm beyond help I know!) is there a product anyone can recommend for when my skin is behaving like it is right now?! I seem to be breaking out daily, tiny surface whiteheads that can literally be scratched off, red sore lumps, more redness, a rough bobbly texture and just generally unhappy at the moment! Nothing in my routine has changed and I'm still happy with everything, I don't think it's a product reaction as been using them ages now. And this always seems to happen when someone compliments my skin! My hairdresser told me I had lovely skin and what did I use?!?! Then the very next day my skin thinks ha ha I tricked you and misbehaves for ages!
So is there anything I can use just for times like this? I've definitely decided my skin doesn't tolerate the Paula's choice bha so that's out!

mintmagnummm · 11/04/2018 07:55

That ending was a bit sudden and abrupt sorry but I had finished what I needed to say 🤐😂

SophieLion · 11/04/2018 08:45

Bo, I think the water is soft here. I personally have no idea and DH didn't seem to be 100% sure. The Frezywash is described (on the bottle) as extra mild for sensitive skin and with mild surfactants. Certainly it leaves no residue whatsoever on the skin when washed off but does feel "harsher" than the Toleriane one. Spoke to dermatologist yesterday and she told me to stop using Toleriane as I got a new under-the-surface spot. From what she said, I get the impression that is is purposely trying to dry my skin about a bit for the moment.

I am starting to think that I liked the Toleriane because it left a slight residue on my skin and therefore made my skin feel softer and smoother. So apologies to all those ladies who I happily told that the Toleriane left no film on my skin Blush

I think I'm generally confused right now when it comes to my skin so shouldn't be listened to at all Grin

Tant - jealous of your amazing looking skin!

Mint - annoying about the samples. Hope they arrive soon. Can't offer any advice as to your skin but hope you find something to sort it out.

Sallie the website I was looking on the other day (it might have been the Medik8 website itself) had the new r-retinoate rejuvenating eye cream/treatment for 110 GBP. Which for a 4 week treatment is obviously not the cheapest.

Enid Flowers Hope you feel better soon.

SallieSallow · 11/04/2018 18:49

Thanks Tant I'll resist the sea kelp for now but let me know how you find it after using for a while as I might be tempted in the future. I have oily skin so sounds like it might be suitable, I've only just bought a new HA though so not ready to move on from that yet. The bo-ing I had was definitely just a concealer, quite a heavy duty one at that which is why I didn't like it much. I'll have a look at the new one.

Mint I think your skin issues might be hormonal, do they occur at around the same time every month? Do you think it's worth keeping a diary and see if it's linked to your cycle or to anything else (other than people giving you compliments Grin) like food, stress, other health issues etc.

EnidButton · 11/04/2018 22:41

Thanks Sophie Cake

Mint I think it's hormonal too. I'm sure it's the same time gap in between your posts where you're having problems. See if it's 3 weeks-ish in between. Often skin is at it's best mid month and then shortly afterwards it's at its worst. Even if periods are irregular/no ovulation etc. Hormones are arseholes.

I've the start of a migraine so that mightn't make sense. No more t'internet for me tonight.

mintmagnummm · 12/04/2018 06:45

Yeah it probably is hormonal, it's weird how some people aren't affected by them and others are! I usually only have 1-2 weeks of feeling ok about things then it all goes to pot! Skin goes crazy, hair and scalp misbehave, my moods are horrendous, I feel dirty and my ocd goes in to overdrive, my boobs are agony and my ovaries hurt like hell! Oh and I become ravenous and nothing satisfies my hunger!

mintmagnummm · 12/04/2018 06:45

My fibromyalgia is playing up at the moment and my migraines are out of control! Goin docs tues to discuss beta blockers!

mintmagnummm · 12/04/2018 07:50

Do any of you have any recs for a cream/gel etc for active breakouts? I have the lrp cicaplast for when they are healing but I need something for when they are at the 'active' stage

peonylover22 · 12/04/2018 08:31

The chantecaille spf 45 primer is lovely. That’s probably because it is so expensive... 😫 Does anyone know whether it is actually giving me spf45 protection? Space NK lady said yes, but it is marketed as a primer not a sunscreen?
Mint I have not tried these myself but a friend of a friend recommended the things in the picture last night. Apparently you stick the patch on when it has formed a white head and it sucks all the badness out (presumably overnight, not suggesting you wander around wearing a patch). Might be worth a try?

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The One Where Sallie Swallows Dermaplaned a Lion Named Fabio
mintmagnummm · 12/04/2018 08:39

Thank you peony I'll check them out

mintmagnummm · 12/04/2018 08:44

Hmm these contain mineral oil which I think breaks my skin out so maybe not the best choice for me 🤔

Tsmummy08 · 12/04/2018 09:30

Mint I been using Neutrogena Visibly Clear Rapid Clear gel for my occasional spots for many years - it's salicylic acid based, so not sure if that's ok for you?

SophieLion · 12/04/2018 09:36

Mint - my dermatologist has told me to use Indoxyl gel on spots (only on the spot and not on surrounding skin as it's very drying). I'm not sure Indoxyl is available in the UK but the active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. I've found it works really well at drawing out the spot (especially on those under the surface of the skin - never actually used it on a normal whitehead though).
HUGE downside is that it bleaches everything if you're not careful so use old towels, pillow cases etc when using it.

Not sure if that helps you or not Confused

mintmagnummm · 12/04/2018 09:38

Thanks tsmummy and Sophie I'll look into both x

EnidButton · 12/04/2018 13:11

Zineryt is really good Mint. Prescription only topical antibiotic. As you're going to docs anyway you could ask about it.
I still think reducing refined sugar would help your hormone issues. Evening primrose oil and magnesium are both very good for calming nerves.

Tantpoke · 12/04/2018 14:34

mint I just dab on salicylic acid onto any spots, and use sheer will power not to squeeze them. Benzoyl peroxide usually works the best if they are prevalent.

I know some people like using the Mario Badescu drying lotion on their spots or the origins super spot remover.
