Sandals - cool but also comfortable

I need sandals for this year - they need to be granny levels of comfortable and although they will mostly be worn in the back of beyond where fashion fears to tread, I will also be in London and want to be suitably on point.

For context, my style is ripped boyfriend jeans, Whistles stuff, Stan smiths, platinum shaggy bob (currently pale pink actually!). In the summer abroad it's denim short shorts, short plain smock dresses, maxi skirt/crop top.

Birkenstocks? Saltwater? Were saltwater only cool 2 years ago or are they timeless? I have pretty glittery Zara sandals for "good" wear - I need everyday cool. Budget about £60.

Please help!

I have about 10 pairs of Birkenstocks-they are all I wear in the summer! They are so comfortable-have never had to wear them in or had shredded feet. That is all I wore for 3 weeks in Florida and we did shed loads of walking!

I like the look of the Oak and Hyde sandals though-they haves similar style footbed. I’ve heard good things about their boots too. I wonder what the sizing is like though-I am a 37 in Birkenstocks but a 5/38 normally?

Have you tried Fly London sandals?

duckling84 · 17/03/2018 09:44

I love my saltwaters and will be getting another pair for this summer (I have tan and looking to buy navy). So so comfortable.
also considering a pair of palmarias, not had any before but I've herd good things

LoniceraJaponica · 17/03/2018 09:49

Where do you all live that you require more than one pair of sandals? I have one pair that are nearly 5 years old. We so rarely get sandal weather that I haven't been able to wear them out yet. I can't wear them to work as our office has such cold aircon in the summer my feet freeze.

I don't understand the MN love for Saltwater and Birkenstocks. I think they are really ugly. No doubt you would find my taste rather frumpy as well Grin

duckling84 · 17/03/2018 10:00

loni I live in my sandals from March/April right through till October. I've been known to dig out my flip flops in February just because I want to. As soon as I no longer need to wear a winter coat I no longer need winter shoes

PurpleCrowbar · 17/03/2018 10:17

I'm overseas so it's sandals all the way from February to November!

Always go back to my Birkies but love those Moshulu ones.

FlindersKeepers · 17/03/2018 10:56

Leather Teva.
Birkenstocks dye the soles of my feet orange in humidity. Merrell have some ok ones, but Teva make extremely comfortable, adjustable sandals which can either look very hiking or the leather ones which are city smart.
I have the new gunmetal wedge ones on the way to me right now in fact.

sillyswimmer · 17/03/2018 10:59

I love Teva sandals. I have leather and fabric universal sandals. I never thought they were particularly cool but I always get lots of compliments when I wear them and they're super comfy.

MountainWitch · 17/03/2018 11:18

I love the slight 90s geek vibe of the tevas and am sorely tempted!

My saltwaters have just lasted and lasted. I love them (I don't find their total flat sole a problem) but the only issue I have is that they have a very smooth under side. So they have zero grip on a grassy slope, scree etc.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/03/2018 11:25

I like the look of some of those Teva sandals. They look very comfortable and supportive. I am not a fan of the chunky "Jesus sandal" look, but the more delicate styles appeal.

duckling84 My feet feel cold very easily. I don't remove socks in temperatures under 21 degrees.

TollgateDebs · 17/03/2018 11:27

I love my Josef Seibel sandals. I have sandals and boots from their ranges and they are so comfortable, I often forget I am wearing them.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 17/03/2018 11:37

Hotter tourist sandals. I bought a silver pair last year and lived in them. They also survived the sea!

MinaPaws · 17/03/2018 11:42

Some of Earth Spirit's are quite nice and you can walk for miles and miles in them. Like walking on air.

I really don't like the look of Birkenstocks. But some of the latest Fitflops are gorgeous.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 17/03/2018 11:43

Office's Hailie sandals fit the bill for my teens and me. But I am not fashionable although I'd like to be. Very comfortable though, and lots of colours.

OutsideContextProblem · 17/03/2018 11:54

I have waterproof Kayenta Tevas for beach holidays and they’ve worn really well, whilst being reasonably attractive.

Clark’s is also worth a look - I need a new pair of sandals for my work commute and the Arla Jacory and Tri Sienna look promising.

Can't get the link to work sorry!

RooKangaroo · 17/03/2018 12:17

I'm also in love with my Saltwaters and can't wait until it's warm enough to get them back out.

I've had navy ones for a few years and lived in them every summer. I picked up a gold/bronze pair in the sale last autumn and I'm so excited to get them out soon! Grin

I'm very picky with sandals - I don't like a toe pie or anything between my toes, and I need an ankle strap/ankle support so slide-on styles don't work for me. They just fall off my feet.

CallarMorvern · 17/03/2018 16:47

I really like the look of the Hotter Tourist sandals. Normally I wear Birkenstock toepost (Gizeh?), but can't afford them at the moment, TK Maxx used to always have them in, but not anymore, they did have the Arizona variation in at our local one this week though, think they were £29.

Sandals - cool but also comfortable
Brys125 · 17/03/2018 16:53

I wish my feet were pretty enough to wear these sandals. I have finger like toes 😢

FYC · 17/03/2018 16:58

I love my Merrells. I’ve had my current pair for six years. They have the comfort of a hiking sandal, with the look of something more everyday. Similar to the Merrill Jacardia. They don’t look clumpy, you can choose between toepost or not. Loads of styles.

I will never buy lesser sandals again Grin

DeathMetalMum · 17/03/2018 17:05

I have some Teva's they're incredibly comfortable and they will be in their third summer this year. Though will probably be replaced this summer.

Nicketynac · 17/03/2018 17:33

I bought Saltwater ones last year. The leather was nice and soft so no rubbing but the sole wasn't as thick as I would have liked. They were fine for pottering about on holiday but I couldn't wear them all day.

Whitney168 · 17/03/2018 17:43

I live in Birkenstocks in the summer, but have to say I like the look of the Teva Ysidro wedges. Would be nice to have something with that bit of heel that was still reallly comfortable.

TravellingFleet · 17/03/2018 17:50

Tevas are ridiculously comfortable and long lasting. I am hell on shoes and mine have climbed mountains and done mile after mile in cities. Their only issue (for the ones I bought) is not being smart enough to be the only pair of shoes on holiday, but the new gunmetal wedge ones look like a possibility.
