Does anyone wear shorts anymore?

We’re going on our first ever beach holiday with the dc at Easter and I’m really not sure what to wear on my bottom half out and about. Before kids I would wear denim knee length skirts but they don’t seem right any more. What would you wear? I’m 50, size 12/14, 5 8 and my legs are awful above the knee!

I wear short shorts, long shorts belong in 1990.

Tbh, if my legs were not good, I would never wear them. They take no prisoners.

Boden Richmond shorts are quite flattering. I tried the longer length but looked bigger than in the medium.
If it's hot shorts or a loose cotton dress would be a good option.
IME shorts are like bikinis, before your holiday you think you shouldn't wear them but when you're there you realise all shapes and ages do.

I love shorts but you have to get the right length for your shape. For me it's 3in legs . I get them from Boden and H&M.

I am in my 50's and wear shorts on holiday and at home. They have some good ones in Next. For a recent holiday I bought some denim "boy shorts" (comfy and stretchy and easy on the waist) and some buff coloured chino shorts that look fab with stripy t shirts and hoodies.

Knee shorts look very old fashioned. Shorter shorts are definitely still worn. And I'm not sure what a previous poster has against capris. If you don't want to wear shorter shorts they would be a good solution. Also dresses, if you want knee length.

I'm also in my 50s and wear shorts on holiday on the beach. Off the beach, I wore an on-the-knee printed linen skirt plus T shirt or smarter/strap pier top - a godsend and I'm on the lookout for a replacement. Got denim skirt as a stopgap, but it's not so comfortable.

I quite like a maxi dress or skirt in warm weather. I do denim shorts when I want sun on my legs..

Knee shorts might look "old-fashioned", but they were a big trend on the catwalks for spring/summer 2018 shows as the 1980s are "back".

As long as they are well tailored and fit, wear them!

I bought a cotton skirt from sea salt that I wore off the beach and a couple of linen dresses. My thighs rubbed a bit in the heat TMI sorry...but not much.

I’ve got crap legs but found some shorts in dotty Perkins that we’re s good length on me with a slightly longer t shirt to balance out a bit.

A longer skirt, maxi length, can look good tea and be surprisingly cool and easy to wear.

The problem with trends that are bringing back a previous decade is that you are old enough to have worn it first time around it can just look like you've been wearing the same thing for decades, rather than being bang on trend. This is why, at 42, I have avoided the 80s jeans comeback....

If you want a tan, I say just go shopping, try on a load of shorts and buy whichever ones YOU like. You may not like your legs, but if you learn to accept that 'this is what I look like' and 'anyone who doesn't like it can do one!' you'll enjoy your holiday a lot more. That's just my two cents, but I understand not everyone is confident enough to say fuck it I'll wear what I like. So failing that, I'd say maxi dress, some nice 3/4 length linen trousers,

Sorry - I know the models are always teeny tiny! But these kind of styles would look good on any size! I'm a 12 and would wear all of these to the beach Smile

I look hideous in shorts no matter what the length or clingyness. My legs and behind aren't even that bad, i look fine in skirts. I don't know what happens! Me + shorts = frumpy mess! Shock :(

So on the beach or when it's hot i wear on the knee length cotton or jersey A line skirts (Fat Face, Mantaray ect, nice with birkis and a vest tops, very comfy) or a stretchy maxi tube skirt with a knee length split. Or a jersey vest dress, knee length or maxi. Nice stripy one from next last year. If i had to be climbing about on rocks ect i'd wear cropped leggings tbh. Black or white. Not glam, i know, wouldn't want to wear them everyday.

No comment on clothings, but for those that have mentioned thigh rubbing you can get wonderful stuff to to stop chafing - Body Glide, used by cyclists. It’s like a stick deodorant that you rub anywhere you want to stop rubbing (ie, inner thighs in the heat) Magic stuff, I went though a whole stick last summer.

I love shorts personally and wear them a lot on holiday. Short chino style shorts from Uniqlo or Gap. If you're self conscious about your upper legs you could a) wear shorts anyway and sod what anyone else thinks b) wear your old denim skirts c) get some cotton midi or knee length skirts which will be cool and floaty without being too revealing. Or something like this from Uniqlo.

I think these or something similar are really pretty for just pulling on over a bikini with a vest top or tshirt for going to/from the beach and to breakfast or lunch. I love denim cut offs too.

I wear shorts. It's like shopping for jeans - finding the right pair for your shape involves trying on lots but when you finally find them you should buy a few pairs.

Cotton summer dresses are great too. Boden always have lots and they're not necessarily wildly colourful.

Cotton 7/8 trousers/chino in light fabric or Capri pants are your friend here. With your frame, they should look great.

Or....you could just go with the shorts and bugger what people think of your “above knee” legs 😊
