Does anyone wear shorts anymore?

We’re going on our first ever beach holiday with the dc at Easter and I’m really not sure what to wear on my bottom half out and about. Before kids I would wear denim knee length skirts but they don’t seem right any more. What would you wear? I’m 50, size 12/14, 5 8 and my legs are awful above the knee!

I agree with the others; wear what you like and feel comfortable in.

I wear knee length, or thereabouts, shorts. I have never worn short shorts as my legs are long (I need a 34" trouser length) and I feel I have a lot of pasty flesh on show. My shorts are either tailored linen or chino style and I wear them with either a cotton / linen shirt, or lightweight knit or a breton top. I'm not comfortable in dresses or skirts, so I don't wear them very often.

These are the most recent ones I have bought.

I'm fat, over 50 and wear shorts above the knee. You'll find plenty of others do the same. I'm all about the comfort and if anyone is offended by my legs, they can just kiss my very comfortable ass!

Hi, I'm 45 and just look rubbish in shorts. Legs dreadful above knee too. I just wear stretch cotton skirts to just above knee. Feel great in them. Have recently been liking boden ones in bright plain colours. Katy

I prefer shorts to short skirts, just feel more secure, can run around in them, bend over etc. Long skirts are just really hot in the heat I find.

Good lord, we’re under such pressure to look good, what ever age, these days. I know my granny wouldn’t have been bothered about getting in her shirts, at my age (56). 😡

shorts 😡

I’m having a bad day as I’m wearing a size 16 jeans (5ft 6”) and my son has told me “I think you don’t look that good in jeans, Mum”. I know but —I’m not supposed to care—

My thighs are chunky (slim lower legs, which draws attention to them!) and I find quite short shorts (not teeny tiny bum showing ones, but one that only extend a couple of inches down my thighs) are actually the most flattering length on me. It's the same with skirts - proper mini skirts are fine, and knee-length/below the knee are fine, but anything above the knee makes my knees look humungous.

The problem with trends that are bringing back a previous decade is that you are old enough to have worn it first time around it can just look like you've been wearing the same thing for decades, rather than being bang on trend. This is why, at 42, I have avoided the 80s jeans comeback....

So you were 14/15 at the end of the 80s? I think you'll be OK.

The trouble with your view is what are you suppose to do once you hit your 60s and can remember the last twice something was in fashion? Go naked?

I wear shorts, of varying lengths and styles. I'm only in my mid-twenties, size 8-10, but my calves are covered in scarring from eczema, which I do feel self-conscious about, but I try to forget about it. I like wearing shorts when it's warm enough to, they are comfy and help you get a tan and stay cool. I don't think there is an age restriction on wearing shorts and I think people should be free to wear whatever the hell they want and should try not to worry about what other people think. In reality most people don't really notice what other people are wearing anyway as we're all too busy thinking about ourselves!
