Really flattering swimsuits

Help me please!

We're going on a lovely sun holiday soon, a real treat, and I don't want to spend a week feeling self conscious.

I'm prepared to spend money on a couple of really good swimsuits that make me feel more comfortable. Where should I shop and what should I look out for?

I'm a size 14 and not very happy with my stomach area which is wobbly. I still have a c section issue going on there. Legs/bum are fine (relatively speaking )

Is plain black the best bet?

Don't go plain black- you'll feel more confident in a suit you really think is beautiful.

M&s tummy control range

Boden tankinis work well for me. Lots of support up top, adjustable straps and ruched over the tummy.

Don’t go for M&S tummy control! I bought a suit last year, same design as one from the year before but this time with tummy control. Sizes the same and I haven’t shrunk/grown. Good Lord! It’s like some kind of instrument of torture. It barely stretches enough to put it on and it’s desperately uncomfortable. Never again!

Another Boden tankini fan, but don't get one with white in the pattern because I've had two that went yellow.

a swimsuit is a body clinging garment, adding loads of frumpy frills like that ghastly job in the ad is going to make you look huge. Note that the model is slim and it puts a stone on her.

boardshorts look good and dry quickly, choose the length you like. No adult woman really looks good in her knickers. Add a tankini or bikini top plus a rash vest for sun protection. Job done.

I agree with pp that tankinis are your friend - flattering and comfortable too. I've also got a couple of lovely swimsuits from a company called NipTuck Swim, which give a really good silhouette. They're an Australia company but TK Maxx seem to stock them quite often.

Something that has 2 layers and ruching ...seafolly are amazing, John Lewis own brand fairly good and cheaper. I've seen some really good ones in debenhams too...

A tankini would never have occurred to me! Don't they leave a gap at lower stomach level (my worst area)? Perhaps time has moved on since I last looked at tankinis and they now make longer models.

I like the look of some of the Seafolly suits. We have a Debenhams and a TK Maxx nearby but not much else so will most likely have to order online.

Boden swimwear is lovely, and really well made. The Amalfi tankini top can be adjusted to give more length if you want. Loads of very nice swimsuits too .

As an aside, I remember a thread on here where someone was very self conscious about going on a sun holiday and wearing a bikini, but when she arrived on said holiday she ended up feeling even more self conscious because she was basically the only one in a swimsuit. Every other woman, no matter what shape, size etc, was wearing a bikini of some sort. Might be worth getting something just in case - check the returns policy, keep the receipt and return if not worn.

Am a large size 12 and usually buy my swimwear from Bravissimo at about £70 a go, however, a few weeks ago I bought a £12 tummy control swimsuit from Asda.

It is without a doubt the best swimwear ever and I am planning to buy one in every pattern!! I know you're prepared to splash out but give it a try!

I'm bigger than you and I've just spent a whole summer wearing this. Very flattering and slight tummy control. Marks and spencer. I sized up one.

Also off point but please don't worry about how you look. I promise you no one is looking and no one cares (unless you are at some Ibiza beach club!). You will see people much bigger then you without a care in the world and it's a glorious sense of freedom to let go of that self consciousness.

Also try some Lululemon type running shorts (quicksilver and rip curl also do them) and a tankini. Although I find the latter a bit restricting and they tend to roll up on me.

When abroad. I just wear a bikini and don't care. Hardly anyone wears a swimsuit, big or small.

I wasn't the person in the message above, but agree with feeling self conscious in a swimsuit. Get a well fitting bikini and take it with you. I like the Freya bikinis with big bikini pants and proper bra tops.

Fig leaves do nice swimwear. Some lovely tummy control ones. I've just ordered one I've also had a section actually two my tummy will never be the same😢. Hopefully I'll feel better in my new one

Funny lots of people preferring bikinis - last year it seemed everyone was in one pieces!

do others find it hard to get swimsuits up when they are wet, or even not wet with some of the tummy control ones?

I am in the market for a reasonably modest swimsuit as my kids are forever yanking down my tops (including of an asda one mentioned about which is boobilicious) and i've lost interest in maintaining my bikini line.

I am a bikini-er on hols but I am now looking for a tankini as it might be easier to get on and off.

Milly, I can’t wear tankinis because they always ride up! One reason I like the For Luna suit is because it’s low enough I can forget about bikini line maintenance

Thank you also for the kind words re not worrying about your size. I'm generally very much on that page and happy in my skin but there's something about having to stand in shallow water for hours on end (small DC!) in essentially underwear that makes me feel a bit uncomfortable!!
