What 20 items to buy for S/S 18?

Just that really.

I'm asking about my casual wardrobe as I have plenty of workwear clothes.

I think my casual spring/summer wardrobe needs an update.
I've got some basics but it all needs a refresh.

If you could buy 20 pieces to add to your existing wardrobe and make yourself look more current what would you or will you be buying?

I can only add one at the mo but I'm on the look out for some lovely tan leather sandals/wedges that look great but are also comfy....

Zombiemama · 05/03/2018 20:32

Oh I'm in the process of filling a spring summer wardrobe. I've gone for a lot of pale pink which is surprising.
New Look have a beautiful lace cardigan in the pink which will be beautiful with a white vest and jeans.
Some floral wrap dresses

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/03/2018 21:08

On my list so far:

Some jeans which are a) not black and b) not skinny
Some suede or leather trainers in grey or black or maybe metallic
A silk top in a print/colour that isn't black or grey
Pink shoes of some sort - not sure what

rightknockered · 05/03/2018 21:27

I will be avoiding pastels, that should cut down on any options.

PurpleNailVarnish · 05/03/2018 22:07

I've just bought the same pair of Reebok trainers that I think I last owned in 1990 but I wasn't counting them in my spring/summer clothes necessarily.

I'm on the look out for a couple of little dresses.

Jeans?
You make a good point about them not being skinny but I can't wear that whole boyfriend style either so I've been looking at alternative styles.

Blondielongie · 05/03/2018 22:27

White plimsoll type trainers
Fitted summer dresses
Blue skinny jeans (don't care that they are out!)
New sunglasses from Oliver Bonas
White shirt/blouse
'boyfriend' t-shirts
Tube/ruched skirt
Nice sandals maybe saltwaters or birks
New handbag that is big, structured and summery
Chinos in a colour that isn't black
A pinafore dress (loved the ones toast had last year)
Can I have the money to buy 20 things? I'd love to do that!!

I need time to think of the remaining 8.

Maybe some sort of warm thing to layer?

Laquila · 05/03/2018 23:23

Hush boyfriend jeans are less boyfriendy than others (i.e. more flattering). I also really rate New Look jeans, but you have to seek out the thicker denim.

I have not a scooby what I’ll be wearing this S/S. Like you, I’m not doing too badly for workwear but I’m feeling very uninspired by what I remember from my wardrobe last year. I fancy some new Birkenstocks and will probably live in said Hush boyfriend jeans and plain t-shorts (Boden, H&M). Any less boring ideas much appreciated!

leccybill · 06/03/2018 00:57

I'm after
an A line denim skirt
Top with some interesting stitching/ woven bits
Pale pink suedey tshirt
Bomber jacket
Loafers - maybe in pink

Floisme · 06/03/2018 08:05

These are either things I've bought already or that are on my list or they're things I would like but probably can't afford:

'Wear anywhere' slouchy trousers.
Wide leg, ankle length jeans.
Cotton jumpers - 2 or 3 in a shorter length to go with new trousers and jeans. Ideally one in that zingy red or green.
Leather plimsolls / sneakers / gym pumps - whatever you call them but not trainers.
Platform heels - not seen any yet but when flares come back, they're never far behind. Love 'em - they're the only heels I'll wear.
A leather blazer - I'm really liking them again. Would have to be second hand as I can't afford new and, in any case, I've not seen any.
A heavy silk shirt to wear with the go-anywhere trousers. Again would have to be second hand.
A casual, cotton shirt - possibly plaid or denim. I rather fancy double denim again. Yes I do.
A watch with a big face.
Some 50s/early 60s costume jewellery.
Some new bras.

Floisme · 06/03/2018 08:12

Sorry it's not 'costume jewellery' - I just mean some bracelets and brooches from that decade.

AnaViaSalamanca · 06/03/2018 08:18

20 items? That's a tall order.
I can think of the following -
a statement skirt
mules
a kimono/coverup with vibrant colors to transform t-shirt and jeans
a summer blazer in light pink or beige
a straw hat
a few summer dresses in white

curragh · 06/03/2018 08:27

Flo Cos have bright red and green cotton jumpers at the moment...have only seen online so can't comment as to the length

On my SS wish list
White leather sandals
Midi length loose printed dress - possibly polka dot
Plain white and grey t-shirts - natural fibres a must
Khaki trousers - good quality joggers or cotton chinos. To wear turned up with sandals or trainers
Long cardigan - blush pink or light grey.

Not SS but I will be waiting for the sales to hopefully buy some bargain cashmere to put away for next winter

Floisme · 06/03/2018 08:46

Thanks curragh I'll take a look.

Laquila · 06/03/2018 09:39

Flo that’s a good point actually about wide leg jeans - I’d like some denim culottes, I guess you’d call them. Or possibly gaucho pants?!

FWIW, M&S had some nice silk shorts in Autograph last season - I got a black one at 20% off which I’m pretty pleased with.

Laquila · 06/03/2018 09:40

Silk SHIRTS not shorts!!

Christ it’ll be a cold day in hell before you get me in silk shorts.

PurpleNailVarnish · 06/03/2018 17:01

AnaVia I suppose 20 is a lot but I didn't buy much in S/S last year.

Then this winter I didn't buy much because I didn't need much and I'm petite so those dangly sleeves did nothing for me.

It's each to their own, but some of the things you've mentioned I couldn't wear. Culottes would make me look like a toddler until they clocked my face as would a pinafore dress, however much I'd like to be able to wear them.

I definitely need more jeans but whether they're in or out I'll probably be wearing my skinnies again because they tend to be flattering if you're petite. I won't be buying anymore because I've got enough!

There's a thread about the horror of a trench coat or kitten heels but I've got a trench that looks lovely so I'll be wearing that again and I think I'll buy some kitten heels. Sorry to bang on about being petite but high heels can look out of proportion on me so kitten heels are a godsend.

I'm actively trying not to buy anymore work clothes our dress code is smart practical so I wear dresses with boots in the winter and tights in the summer. I've got so many dresses now it's just not funny, I grab them from the Reiss/Hobbs/Jigsaw etc sales and I do not need anymore I wrote that as much to remind myself as anything.

I'd like a good pair of 3/4 length trousers if I can find some.
I've seen some denim dresses I like and some pretty floral dresses.

I'm steering clear of anything that shouts of the 90s trend because I wore it the first time round.

I'll take a look at Hush. I read the recent thread about White Stuff going off the boil and I agree but I'm hopeful they might have some summer cardigans again this year, they usually do.

Just bought two blinding below-the-knee crepe dresses from HM of all places - one tomato red, one all splashy with irises and tulips.

The cut was so good I bought both colourways, but they do a plain dark blue too. Extremely comfortable, 3/4 sleeves, neck neither high nor low, elastic waisted, smart, don't need ironing. Dressed in 60 secs, basikerly.

Beyond that, the usual chunky slides, white gym shoes and a denim duster coat, but that's an elusive beast.

Ididnthearanything · 06/03/2018 18:22

LanaorAna2 is that this dress Tried It on the other day. V nice on. Looks nothing in the pic. Might go back for it.
Also saw a nice skirt but the 14 was really tight. And there is no 16Hmm. Grr. I am a pretty average 10 - 12. Also tried on a size 6 too which fitted v nicely. But this is all for another thread.
I’d like sandals, for work. So they need to be, decent, I suppose.
A summer jacket/coat.
A go anywhere dress
Summer going out top

CountFosco · 07/03/2018 00:05

Was thinking I didn't need anything then I got the Hush catologue.

Smartish coat for work, either a navy blazer or a boucle jacket.
There's some gorgeous wide legged cullotte dark denim jeans in M&S that I'd totally get if they had them in their short length.
Quite want a camo t-shirt after seeing the Hush one.
Or possibly a khaki shacket.
A rainbow jumper would be good but I've not seen one I like yet.
Pair of laceups from Rogue Matilda.
One of the stripy jumpers from COS.
A jumpsuit if I can find one that doesn't make me look like a convict.
A pair of joggers that actually fit and are soft and cozy cotton. The Hush ones were enormous last year.
A silk floral maxi dress (clearly I have veen reading Bum40 too much).
New bras.
New swimsuit (functional, the kind of beaches I go to on holiday need a jacket).
A navy crossbody bag.

But I think the next thing I buy will be shoes for DD1, she's gone through the heels of her school shoes and needs new trainers as well.

PurpleNailVarnish · 07/03/2018 13:53

I'd love a maxi dress too count.

OP posts:
Annabelle4 · 07/03/2018 17:15

I've totally taken this look from Instagram but I'm going to buy white skinny jeans and a blue denim blouse.

Floral tea dresses, tight maxi dresses, new sunglasses, beige wedges

PurpleNailVarnish · 07/03/2018 17:47

Large raffia bags are supposed to be all the rage this summer too but I don't think I'll bother!

Mixingitall · 07/03/2018 17:50

Have a look at a website called Sheerluxe and see what they suggest? It’s my go to site to see what cuts are stylish.

CountFosco · 07/03/2018 18:39

Oooeeer. And I love this bag.

Laquila · 07/03/2018 21:50

Hah, I didn’t say I actually looked any good in culottes!...😄

I’d like some tan leather sandals that are as comfy and slippery as Birkenstocks not a bit less...predictable. Any suggestions welcome (not Saltwater - too flat I think).
