Anyone turning their back on ‘anti - aging’?

omBreROSE · 01/03/2018 11:30

I’d always used organic/simple products... my skin is fine ( l’m in my mid 40’s)
Anyway, l got sucked into watching blogs/ YouTube tutorials etc... l wanted to try everything to delay the inevitable. I’d previously been sensible and realised there was nothing, bar botox/fillers that might make a difference.
Yes, there are the retinols etc... but *they need careful monitoring and can just set your skin off - whenever!
I’ve been trying one Ordinary product after the next, on ( what l think now) is a journey on to nothing!
Seeing as only the retinols can penetrate the skin - maybe everything else is just not worth it?
Emotionally or financially?
Has anyone thought they’d try to ‘fix it’ and then thought “bugger it!”Grin
If you did, what is your skincare routine now, and what did you do previously?
I’m leaning toward a nice simple moisturiser and a good SPF. Smile

Delatron yes! Wtf is with that???

5/6 years ago I genuinely looked 10 years younger than my age. Now, at 44, I feel like a haggard old cow! ShockConfused

Ollivander84 · 01/03/2018 22:40

I'm 33 and had my first lot of Botox. Mostly because I adore makeup and I was struggling with it sitting in the horizontal lines on my forehead. Plus the vertical lines between my brows were bothering me. It's not obvious at all, I do look less tired/grumpy
Some of it was from not wearing sunglasses I think as I wear prescription glasses

Worth a watch 😁 most ages we aren't happy

Delatron · 01/03/2018 22:48

catastropheeee oh god, me too. Naively thought that, although I would age, I would always track many years younger. Was mistaken for 28 at 37. People looked shocked when I told them my age. I hit 41 and I look every inch my age. It's like ageing 10 years literally overnight. Very tough.

IWantMyHatBack · 01/03/2018 22:49

I don't use anything and never have. Don't use foundation and sometimes use face wipes for any major eye make-up but that's it.

Going by the way most people treat me, I definitely don't look my age (mid 40s) My neck will give me away before much longer though.

EauDeChlorine · 01/03/2018 22:54

Never used anti aging creams. I just don’t believe they work. Moisturiser more moisturiser and a good sunscreen. On the odd day when my skin feels dry I apply a thick cream such as Nivea, sudocream or Bepanten in a tick layer. Let soak in for 15 mins then remove excess.

Catastropheeee · 01/03/2018 22:58

Delatron I have gone to the lengths as putting pile cream of my saggy face.

Apparently it's not good for you though.

I am so tempted by fillers ConfusedConfusedConfused

Pleasebeafleabite · 01/03/2018 23:04

I do baby botox and I like it. I wait till it wears off then go back for more. The muscles definitely don’t atrophy they are just Hibernating!

Also bad botox is easy to spot i can spot it myself but you don’t know who is having unobtrusive botox as they are not going to be telling you about it

I think the big underrated thing for aging is the benefit of a good facial massage to improve the drainage. On the rare occasion i have these i look dramatically less puffy and more fresh faced. If i was a celeb this is what I would spend my time doing

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 01/03/2018 23:11

At first I was not impressed with my Botox thought it had not worked then woke up a couple of mornings later and my lines had gone! I’m not frozen still have eyebrow movement but it is so lovely not to have that grumpy look or have make up sat in my lines, I don’t look younger just fresher. It’s not for everyone but glad I have had it done.

Timefortea99 · 01/03/2018 23:24

The less I do to my face the better I look. I am 52. I think I look like an attractive 52. What makes the difference to the way I look was I sorted out my teeth, I get enough sleep, stress is kept to a minimum, I walk everywhere, I look confident and engaged. I am totally on board with ageing. As long as I am healthy and have energy, that is fine by me. I know lots of people my age who have had serious illnesses or who have died, I consider myself lucky to have the luxury of ageing. Others don't. If someone said to you that you had a month to live, would you honestly give a stuff about wrinkles?

Pleasebeafleabite · 01/03/2018 23:39

Unfortunately Timefortea whilst waiting to die we still have to look at ourselves in the mirror every morning so why not make the experience a more positive one

busyboysmum · 01/03/2018 23:47

I'm 48 and my mirror experience is fine. Why obsess about your appearance? I'm with the live healthily and enjoy your life brigade.

JaneJeffer · 02/03/2018 00:41

I'm too lazy to do any of that stuff. I don't think my wrinkles make me look cross but sometimes I wish they did so I could look a bit more authoritative Grin

Just catching up with responses. Very interesting... Smile

I’ve gone the other way....I use the ordinary aha peel 2 x a week, Reservatrol 2 x a day & an LED mask daily, 20 minutes of blue, same of green & 30 on red.

I looked young before but my skin tone is noticeably more even, my skins firmer & I just look “better”.

I’ve been wearing spf 50 for 19 years, face and neck so my skins still firm. Never smoked or tanned.

I have greys coming through but no intention of dying them. I would love a Mallen streak like my dad but no such luck.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/03/2018 07:45

I use the ordinary caffeine all over the eye area too.

NorksAreMessy · 02/03/2018 08:22

I am a huge fan of old fashioned blue Nivea in a big pot!
All the standard ‘anti-ageing’ creams are mostly just that...a moisturiser, and they ‘work’ compared to not moisturising at all.
Ben Goldacre (‘Bad Science’) wrote about this YEARS ago, the lengths advertisers have to go to to stay inside the advertising standards and yet still manage to sell snake oil with marvellous made-up science (anyone remember ‘Boswellox’ ?)
The main things for lovely skin are genetics :) , not smoking (HUGE difference after 50 in pals that have smoked) , and moisturiser of some sort.

ShewasjustawishStevie · 02/03/2018 08:30

I look confident and engaged and that, I believe, is the key to a happy and fulfilling life no matter what age.

I hate the language some women are using on this thread "face looks like it fell off a cliff" "haggard old cow"

Jesus wept.

Catastropheeee · 02/03/2018 08:38

Maybe if you read my first post shewas you'd understand that there are sometimes more complex issues at play for people.

runningtogetskinny · 02/03/2018 08:40

I haven rtft, however, I can spot Botox and fillers a mile off! They don't make you look younger, just someone who's had stuff done! I actually think it can be ageing, I always assume people who've had it are in their 50s, but a colleague who had it is only 42 - I'd assumed she was older! I'm 50 but the kids I work with always assume I'm late 30s. I wear make up, exercise outdoors daily, and keep up with fashion and my weight under control. I'll be grateful to look 'in my 60s' my father died at 62 and was never fortunate enough to look old - we need to seriously change our outlook and be thankful we're ageing

VileyRose · 02/03/2018 08:43

I also think that it can be hard but changing mindset is key. Women have so much to give beyond looks. It's just a way of ridding women of their power, as in not childbearing age makes us less deseriable. We need to drop this notion and claim it back and stop stressing so much. Since I stopped wearing make up, my routine is much less easier with cold water and soap. I am not sure I look 'better' I just look like me and I am happier and more relaxed.

ShewasjustawishStevie · 02/03/2018 08:52

Cat - I've RTFT including your contributions and I maintain that using such language is unacceptable. No wonder so many women feel shit about themselves.

Ollivander84 · 02/03/2018 08:55

For me having Botox wasn't about looking younger. Sounds odd but I didn't associate the lines/wrinkles with age, more that they were irritating me when I was putting makeup on.. not that I thought oh I want to look a decade younger
If that makes any sense?!

LizzieSiddal · 02/03/2018 09:00

I’m absolutely shocked reading sine of the threads on MN. The actual anoint of stuff people are rubbing into their faces is rediculous. If any of this stuff worked the companies wouldn’t keeoninvernting new stuff to slap on.

I also think there will be a huge increase in skin cancers because of Retinol useage.
