I've got a couple of smart London restaurant events.
5'10 size 14 with a thick middle aged tyre, 50.

Not looking to be cutting edged but not Country Bumpkin which I am

I wouldn't give up on the dress idea op. I practically live in dresses and find them much more comfortable and flattering then trousers. You just have to find the shape to suit your figure.

dreamingoficecream · 24/02/2018 21:27

I'm muddling myself up here.
The Pepperberry dress is lovely but isn't it too dressy? Plus, my chest size is 34B.
The blue floral is very pretty but I feel it's too pretty.
The Other Stories is trendy but I don't think it would be flattering on my barrel shaped middle.
Thank you so much for the input, it's very much appreciated.

5'10 size 14 with a thick middle aged tyre, 50.

It is sold out in every size except for a size 10.

Versorecto · 24/02/2018 21:30

That first dress has a weird hemline. It’s a no from me.

jemmstar1980 · 24/02/2018 21:32

Are you thinking you’d like to wear the same outfit to both events?

OP posts:
jemmstar1980 · 24/02/2018 21:45

Haven’t lost the plot. That combination would be nice for your friends event if it is a lunch, personally I don’t think it would be appropriate for a work event.

But feel free to ignore me!

And a pair of Spanx for the work thing

user1474652148 · 24/02/2018 21:59

Frumpy

Beanteam · 24/02/2018 22:10

This is smart
m.johnlewis.com/toast-noelle-jersey-dress-blue/p3443690
But has low neck at the back!

SinglePringle · 24/02/2018 22:31

Seeet Jesus, that Toast dress is every single kind of bad!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/02/2018 22:36

Sorry but that Toast dress is bloody horrible imvho.

Whistles silk bodycon dresses are lovely, and you could always wear sucker-inner knickers, if worried about the 'tyre'.

Try OtherStories for nice silk shirts.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/02/2018 22:38

Pretty

dreamingoficecream · 24/02/2018 22:41

I've already got this is my wardrobe, maybe it's not to dressy for dinner?

I like it
It looks shit on the model as she is shapeless and flat chested and it doesn't fit her properly. Wrap dresses are better with some curves/flesh.

I think its borderline 90s retro though so at 50 you'd need to be careful styling it, deffo not lots of matching stuff and shoes would need to be a little "off".
The skinny trouser, silk shirt look is a bit too Lulu potentially

Beanteam · 24/02/2018 22:50

The black lace dress would be fine for dinner, very flattering.
Wrap dresses not ideal if you have a ‘ thick middle’.

ChishandFips33 · 25/02/2018 01:33

I like your lace dress best so far, more so if you feel comfortable/good in it

Dress up with jewellery and statement bag for work do and down with blazer and scarf lower key bag for friends do?

Do you know what others will be wearing for the birthday?

Elledorado · 25/02/2018 06:49

With a thick middle, smallish boobs and your height I would steer clear of wrap dresses.

That Whistles wrap has the potential to be terrible, the lace one is too formal, I find Boden frumpy generally (although the lace top is nice), whistles bodycon dresses I love but they are short on me (and I'm not tall like the OP). Have you looked at Cos or Warehouse?

feelinginthedark · 25/02/2018 06:59

Massimo dutti has a lovely heavyweight black wrap midi dress at the moment. Just bought it for a black tie dinner and will dress it up with earrings etc

dreamingoficecream · 25/02/2018 07:11

I'll have a look at M.D. thank you.

Warehouse have this which is nice but suspect what looks trendy on a 20 year old but might look frumpy on a 50 year old.

I think your Phase Eight dress is the best option so far. Also like the option of skinny/cigarette pants with a silk shirt - particularly as you're not big on the chest. You could wear something that sits over your trousers or tucked in depending on which you'd go for. Cigarette pants and simple high heels will always be stylish in my book. With an elegant bag and accessories (not garish "statement" type).

Versorecto · 25/02/2018 08:31

Aren’t we boycotting phase eight after they revealed that they are paying men 54% more than women???Angry

PaperdollCartoon · 25/02/2018 08:40

OP I have your answer - Baukjen. So flattering, the jersey is thick and skims, and cut for taller ladies (of which I am not but still manage to get away with it)

Perhaps: www.baukjen.com/uk/m/shop/baukjen/dresses/alexandra-dress-caviar-black.htm

Or I wanted to suggest the Darton dress which is crazy flattering, but they’re all out of stock.

Also as a side note. Are you SURE you’re a 34B? Please do this calculator as well, the right bra makes all the difference booborbust.com
