Having spent the best part of the last decade wearing skinny jeans tucked into boots, I'm a little stumped what to wear now they're going out of fashion.

It looks like looser jeans are now called for, but they're just so far out of my comfort zone that I don't know where to start...

Slim fit? Relaxed fit? Straight leg? Please don't suggest those dreadful Mom jeans.

And then there's the question how long they should be. Growing up, wearing too short jeans was the ultimate fashion faux pas, whereas now it looks like we're supposed to be getting cold ankles? Am I supposed to start buying them 2 inches shorter than previously?

I'm planning on wearing them with ankle boots (MN favourite Chelseas or shoe boots), loafers or Adidas Gazelles.

Please point me in the right direction....

Why don't you look at your body shape and decide what style suits you best?

E.g. I won't wear cropped/short jeans as they make my legs look short and dumpy. I don't wear skinny jeans as my legs look like parsnips.

busyknee · 18/02/2018 14:55

Stick with your skinnies. Ignore the pressure to get the new, cool thing. It's just marketing. If skinnies suit you and make you feel good there's no need to ditch them. Grin

Itscurtainsforyou Omg parsnips...so true!! Ditto cropped leg! Bought cropped white jeans last summer - so ageing/mumsy.

Avocadosarethewayfirward · 18/02/2018 15:14

I know! I too feel that I have been in skinny jeans for the last 10 years - and the thought of launching myself into some sort of ‘mom jeans’ horror was just unthinkable. So, I’ve taken the plunge and bought some Topshop straight leg jeans in a mid-blue. They look nice (especially with black Gazelles) but it took a little getting used to after my uniform of black skinnies...

mikado1 · 18/02/2018 15:16

What's the name of the Topshop jeans please?

Itscurtainsforyou · 18/02/2018 15:22

I do straight leg, bootcut (the horrors! Wink) and wide leg Smile

Avocadosarethewayforward · 18/02/2018 15:51

My straight leg Topshop jeans are just called ‘Authentic Straight Leg’

Butterfly1975 · 18/02/2018 16:03

I love the relaxed skinnies from Next. For me they are the most comfy and flattering jeans as I'm petite but curvy.

Tesco and TU straight jeans are also good. I think once you've made the break from skinnies you won't look back Wink

chloechloe · 18/02/2018 20:29

I did bootcut the last time round curtains!

I'm thinking I would like a change from skinnies. They're a pain to get off and far too sweaty when it's hot. I just think I need to ease myself into it with an entry level slim fitting jean! Grin

I'm not in the UK so can't get the supermarket brands but will have a look at Topshop and Next.

Marks and Spencer do slim leg jeans. They're really soft and nice. They're much comfier than skinnies.

chapthedoor · 18/02/2018 20:56

Also, I used to get 32 inch leg in bootcut so they grazed the floor but in skinnies/slim I get a 30

Loveatthefiveanddime · 18/02/2018 21:21

I saw an IG-er with sexy boyfriend jeans, turned up, with ankle boots under. I resolved to try that out, those jeans were from Gap.

silver1977 · 18/02/2018 21:54

Out of interest, what footwear do you wear with straight/slim leg jeans as they don't tuck into boots like skinnies do they? Fine in the spring/summer but what about now?!

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 18/02/2018 21:59

If skinny jeans are on the way out why could I only find skinny jeans when I went shopping for jeans the other day? I was desperately looking for straight leg/slim fit ones.

Ofthread · 18/02/2018 22:20

What’s wrong with mom jeans? I’ve got these, love them Grin

Thanks avocados 👍

Mulberrysilk · 18/02/2018 23:20

What's wrong with mom jeans, ofthread, is that on me they look like this

Ofthread · 19/02/2018 00:44

Er, I see what you mean, but surely that was just a really bad cut? or perhaps I just look like this.

Ofthread · 19/02/2018 00:45

I mean, some of those jeans have bloody darts on them for belly expansion. Those Asos ones are more of a corset. Grin

Featherstep · 19/02/2018 23:59

I'm just searching for some straight legs right now as well, and plan to go to a Topshop to try theirs.
I too worry about the footwear, I think straight legs look nice a bit higher than the ankle, with a slim ankle boot with a small heel. And trainers with no socks showing, and summer shoes. But really no idea how else you'd wear them now? A flat chelsea boot seems to not go at all.
(They'd go well with high heels I'm sure but out of question for my lifestyle!)

I have Gap best girlfriend jeans I'm very happy with them, they're fitted enough but super comfy, and look nice rolled up. Recommended!

Featherstep · 20/02/2018 00:16

Had a look on pinterest, and all seem to be worn quite cropped to look nice. Kind of like this www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/562457440944193260/
All the other nice outfits feature cold ankles Angry

chloechloe · 21/02/2018 13:09

feather I agree that Chelsea boots just don't work well, which is a shame as I have a pair!

We currently have lots of snow here so the cold ankle look is not happening!

ofthread (clever name!) no offence wrt to your mom jeans. It's just that I have child bearing hips, a mum tum and a small waist so I don't think they'd do me any favours. Although some darts in my jeans could be very accommodating!!!!

You basically have to be stunning (or deluded) to wear mom jeans. Seen a few lithe teens in them and they look great, but mere mortals? Non. I'm sure you look fab though, ofthread.

halfwitpicker · 21/02/2018 13:14

ofthread (clever name!)

^

Yes, cool name.

Ofthread · 21/02/2018 13:19

I am probably more towards the deluded side of things Grin.
