Who's the 'mint velvet' woman?

imlovingangelsinstead · 14/02/2018 13:57

How would you describe a mint velvet customer?

OP posts:
GertieMotherwell · 15/02/2018 15:19

Boring?! Hmm

How the fuck to you equate someone’s personality to what they wear.

Some very shallow posters on this thread.

HoneyDragon · 15/02/2018 17:05

I ventured in as my mate was picking up a scarf her mum had ordered and did a total double take at a dress that for one horrible moment I though had been decorated with willies.

cod · 15/02/2018 17:52

Every time someone shops at mint velvet a kitten DIES. They’re that bad you know.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/02/2018 17:56

I find it frumpy, not for me at all but then perhaps I'm a bit mutton in my clothing choices?
In the eyes of others of course, I like what I wear, I imagine MV shoppers are around 55 or perhaps just look it and I'm 40.

LoginLogan · 15/02/2018 17:57

I've ordered 3 jumper tops from MV in the past and all ended up in a black bag for the charity shop. Seemed like a good idea at the time but just could never find the right thing to match them with. I wasn't enamoured by the grey colours as well. Maybe next time.

cod · 15/02/2018 17:59

I really liked it at the start. identified a gap
Had nice satin tops etc. But now so ££ for what it is.

TheChineseChicken · 15/02/2018 18:19

Gertie I meant the clothes were boring - for me - not the people wearing them

RavenLG · 15/02/2018 18:20

I had to google it as I assumed you meant mint coloured velvet.

The clothes are awful and overpriced imo.

BanyanTree · 15/02/2018 18:29

Obviously if you kit yourself out form MV then you are going to look "nice". I look in there but I have only ever bought a pair of boots from there myself which are actually quite fab. It is overpriced and the quality is not very good. I don't think it is wannabe rock chic at all. It is more mumsie than anything else.

CaptainCardamom · 15/02/2018 18:31

I think she must be a strange beast as she has plenty of disposable income, but zero aversion to polyester. I think of her as a former slightly gothy or rock chick type, now with professional job and money to spend, gets her hair expensively highlighted, and is slim and smart, but not especially quirky or individual. She probably also shops at Whistles and Reiss.

I want to like MV because in theory I like floaty things and abstract prints, but in reality everything is a bit too short, made of polyester and just doesn't quite work on me.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/02/2018 19:46

Yes Banyan, nice is what it is, just nice.
The Tim, nice but dim of clothing.

Lordamighty · 15/02/2018 19:53

Is there any need to be quite so sneering about what other people choose to wear?

Pinkkahori · 15/02/2018 20:01

I have a couple of Mint Velvet tops, always get compliments on them.

I would also like to know where the people who deem it 'boring' 'frumpy', 'mumsie' etc. shop.

Of course they probably won't tell us in case we decide to shop there and lower the tone.

CaptainCardamom · 15/02/2018 20:06

It's not nice to be sneery, but clothes shops themselves have a target audience in mind (or if they don't they should, I'm looking at you M&S) and I find this stuff interesting. And yes maybe shallow, but shallow can still be interesting.

It does boggle my mind that expensive shops like Whistles and MV have so much polyester at high (for the high street) price points. It really puts me off, if I'm going to splash out on a high-end brand then I want natural fibres, silk, cotton, linen or quality viscose. I don't know if that's just me or these shops failure to understand their customer.

Wakeuptortoise · 15/02/2018 20:06

I have one overpriced mv star print t-shirt. Thought I'd found the older, rock chick shop for me. Ordered some stuff online but sent it all back. Too short/ tight and expensive. I'm mid 30's.

Pinkkahori · 15/02/2018 20:11

What shops sell clothes in the Mint Velvet price range and do nice fabrics and no polyester? I've been wondering this because it seems to be everywhere.
I was looking at Phase Eight recently and surprised to see polyester blouses at €90 a pop.

Lizzylou · 15/02/2018 20:17

I have a grey lace skirt from MV (yrs ago now), but nothing else.
TBH I don't know a single person who only ever shops in one place, surely you just buy whatever you like from wherever you like?

CaptainCardamom · 15/02/2018 20:31

Pinkkahori I don't think there are many places that will have no polyester at all on principle, but Hush are pretty good for natural fabrics, also Toast, and I like ebay because you can do a search that specifies fabric types.

creaturefeatures · 15/02/2018 20:49

Come on then, oh wise ones that think MV is frumpy and mumsie...where do you shop?

Lizzylou · 15/02/2018 20:52

I far prefer Hush to MV, they also do good sales/discounts.

Lizzylou · 15/02/2018 20:53

creature, I am not stylish, nor would I presume to call people mumsy but was replying to another poster who mentioned that Hush was more natural fibre friendly.

CaptainCardamom · 15/02/2018 21:01

Hush is now a bit like Boden in that's it's a whole look that you can buy into, or you can pick and choose the bits that suit your style, or the less "obvious" bits.

I think MV is less like that as it's quite uniform-looking, and tends to be all one colour palette and style.

Greenteandchives · 15/02/2018 21:07

MV used to have gorgeous dresses and tops. My favourite LBD is a MV. Now they have nothing I like except the T shirts, and I won’t pay the prices they are charging for those.
I would say that their customer is a higher age than they would like to think.

mrsrhodgilbert · 15/02/2018 22:19

It used to be ok and a bit different with good fabrics and I suppose attracted women with a little more money to spend. I still have silk tops from some years ago. Like many other stores they have increased the man made fibre content but kept the prices high. Polyester is not the friend of a middle aged woman, I don't buy from there now. Also it's styles are getting a bit per una.

CharisMater · 15/02/2018 22:32

where do you all shop?

I have to look everywhere. Sometimes I see something I like.
