Mulberry Bayswater

I've been hankering after a tan heritage/classic Bayswater for the past year or so but have always come to my senses before purchasing. I've just been in Mulberry again to touch one and came very close to buying. I can afford it, but it's a stupid amount to spend on a bag right? It doesn't even fit on my shoulder which I like bags to do.

It's so pretty though. DH convinced me to think on it for another week to see if the urge goes. Grin

Life is short, if u like it and can afford it, go for it.
I bought mine second hand. Cost me £360 about 5 year ago.
It is a lovely bag and I enjoy using it. But, it's very heavy and doesn't fit over my shoulder well enough to be comfortable.
I don't use it much.
I am though, now off to dig it out as you've reminded me I should enjoy it more often.

Try and find a good second hand one. That's my advice.

Kitsharrington · 04/02/2018 10:52

Still, if you want it get it.

Off topic but I cannot believe how much mulberry has gone up in price. When the Bayswater first came out it was £450. I’m not averse to designer bags, I have several, but something about mulberry rubs me the wrong way. I feel like they put their prices up simply to appear exclusive rather than because the quality warrants it.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 04/02/2018 10:54

My Bayswater lives in my handbag trunk. I don’t believe it came out even once last year. It’s not a decent bag for the money and doesn’t fit on my shoulder either.

Oh and they’re vair common dahling.

loobylou10 · 04/02/2018 14:02

I knew mine wasn’t going to fit on my shoulder when I bought it!!! Saved up hard for it and I love it.

Mercurial123 · 04/02/2018 14:14

Mine fits on my shoulder it's usually the way I carry it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/02/2018 14:19

Another one that thinks it's too heavy. Dh bought me one as a surprise years ago and I didn't use it because even with just a purse, phone, keys and general bits it was so uncomfortable to carry.

I wouldn't bother OP.

peachypetite · 04/02/2018 14:24

I absolutely love mine. I got a black one in the outlet in Bicester village.

scampiesandchips · 04/02/2018 14:26

I have an oak and a black croc. Yes, they're beautiful, but annoyingly ubiquitous now and also awkward to carry. I wouldn't buy another. I much prefer my £70 Longchamp Blush

Mercurial123 · 04/02/2018 14:27

GreatDuck some people find it heavy some don't I certainly don't find it uncomfortable.

chloechloe · 04/02/2018 14:49

I have two and love them. Black with soft gold hardware and an oak croc print. I do think the plain oak ones are a bit common now in the U.K. depending on where you live. I'm abroad though and don't see so many around.

The Mulberry price increases did indeed get crazy a few years back but they've slowed down now and I think they have a policy to try to keep the brand at the affordable end of the luxury market. That they became overpriced is also shown by the fact that you can find oak and black bags in the biannual sales now which wasn't the case a few years back. It's a shame you've just missed the sale as you may have found something there.

As bags they are pretty indestructible, I used to carry a laptop in mine. I was quite careful with the oak as I didn't want it to get stained. I used Colnil gel to keep the leather supple and also the spray to waterproof it.

I'm currently covering a medium Lily as I now need to carry a laptop bag to work and the Bayswater is a bit too bulky to take with it. Having read this thread I'm contemplating looking for a second hand one.

SchrodingersFrilledLizard · 04/02/2018 14:52

I have a few old Bayswaters and I love them

chews sleeves with envy

I would love to own one - just one! - Bayswater. They are so beautiful.

Housewife2010 · 04/02/2018 15:01

I have an Oak Bayswater which I love, but I find that I use my oxblood Del Rey as my everyday bag. It is lighter, has survived several rain showers ( I am very precious about keeping my Bayswater out of the rain) and has a really handy front pouch that I can keep keys and things I want quick.and easy access to in.

AmethystMoon · 04/02/2018 15:01

I second the Facebook groups, although always get authentication if you purchase unless you know what you’re looking for.
I got a second hand oxblood Bayswater recently for 300. I’ve bought a liner for it (protects and adds pockets). Plus used collonil products to restore it colour and have added hardware protection to prevent further scratches. It now looks fabulous.
I can get mine on my shoulder, so maybe it depends on body proportions? I’m not skinny by the way Grin

Torvi · 04/02/2018 15:23

If you want it to fit over your shoulder then get the Bayswater East West. I have one in chocolate Congo leather and it's beautiful. I agree the preloved is a good idea as the quality of the older Mulberry bags is far superior to the newer ones.

ClaudiaNaughton · 04/02/2018 15:31

In case of heavy rain I keep a folded plastic bag at the bottom of mine and would just whack it in. I’ve never had to use it though.

deaddeadgood · 04/02/2018 17:56

Great idea pp never thought of that!

ClaudiaNaughton · 04/02/2018 21:29

Amethyst what is hardware protection?

BubblesBuddy · 04/02/2018 23:27

They are ok but never floated my boat. £1000 is a lot for a floppy hold-all. I paid £1400 for a Gucci bamboo handle bag at Bicester Village. I know which one I’d rather have!

Kintan · 04/02/2018 23:32

I have one that I got duty free at Heathrow in 2009. It cost around £450. I am shocked at how much the prices have gone up since then. I really love the bag, and have used it a lot over the years, but there’s no way I would have got it now they are around the £1000 mark - that’s a ridiculous amount to pay!

TattiePants · 05/02/2018 11:35

The weight does depend on the type of leather. I have 2, the printed oak is much heavier than my red onion in pebbled patent. I used to have one in darwin leather and that was very heavy, even when empty. Also, I'm quite chunky of person and can still carry them over my shoulder as long as I'm not wearing a thick coat.

They do age well but I would recommend contacting Louise at Love Lolo - she stocks a huge range of creams, gels, sprays to clean, weather protect, remove scratches etc.
