Mulberry Bayswater

I've been hankering after a tan heritage/classic Bayswater for the past year or so but have always come to my senses before purchasing. I've just been in Mulberry again to touch one and came very close to buying. I can afford it, but it's a stupid amount to spend on a bag right? It doesn't even fit on my shoulder which I like bags to do.

It's so pretty though. DH convinced me to think on it for another week to see if the urge goes. Grin

I have this bag. It really isn’t practical or comfortable at all in use, so I hardly ever use it. I like the look of it though, and the older it gets the better it looks. But I prefer shoulder straps and more inside pockets in a bag.
However, I think if it is something you have always hankered after, and you can afford it, then you should buy it and enjoy it.

EdinaMonsoon · 03/02/2018 15:33

Mine is 14 years old and looks better now than when I first bought it. I have used it for everything from a nappy bag to an overnight bag and day-to-day use. If you can afford it and know that using it will give you pleasure then I'd definitely recommend.

Haint · 03/02/2018 15:41

I’ve used mine every single day for 9 years. Cost per wear is negligible. And yes, it just gets better with age

RiskIt4Biscuit · 03/02/2018 15:56

Of course it's a stupid amount of money to spend on a bag, but so what? If you can afford it and you want the bag, and know you will use it, then I don't see the problem.
Loads of people spend stupid amounts of money on stuff they prioritise, so why shouldn't you spend it on a bag if that's what you want?

I have a few old Bayswaters and I love them - I think they are classic bags. My oldest one is probably 13 or so years, and it's still lovely. I have never babied the bag, but I still get lovely comments about it from strangers.
I have one that does not fit over my shoulder as the leather is less soft (it's a croc print version), and I simply don't use it as often as I have used the other ones, because I need it to go over the shoulder when I'm out.

The oak NVT leather (like this one: www.mulberry.com/gb/shop/women/bags/classics/heritage-bayswater-oak-natural-leather ) will get darker over time, which is something you should keep in mind. You can treat it, but it will always be sensitive to rain and so on, and will get stained. I really like it, but some people don't.
I wouldn't recommend the new leather (www.mulberry.com/gb/shop/family/bayswater-search/bayswater-with-strap-oxblood-natural-grain-leather ) - I've had issues with products in the new leather, and I've come across a lot of others who have had issues. But the old leather is lovely.

CoffeeOrSleep · 03/02/2018 15:59

Life is short. If you want it and can afford it, then why not spend your money on something that will give you joy?

I have one in black - I bought it when I had to wear dark colours to work and regret now that I didn't get the tan as that would suit my wardrobe better now!

Magpiemagpie · 03/02/2018 16:19

I have one in oak ive used it twice 😂. It's to heavy and not practical enough for me but it is gorgeous and I do feel grown up when I first used it .

If you want to make me a offer feel free 😂 I have the original gift bag receipt for proof of purchase from House Of Fraser dust bag and the gif receipt box .
It's in absolutly first class condition & not a single mark on it as I've used it twice since buying it and it's now gathering dust in my wardrobe
It was a total mad impulse buy

I also bought the mulberry purse to match in oak - I have used this every day and I love it and would definatly buy another one of these. That was worth every penny of £300 but the bag nah .

Also look on Vestiare Collective as well you often get people selling them and they are independently verified so your not buying a fake

BlackSwan79 · 03/02/2018 16:25

Have a look at the preloved groups on Facebook. I've bought a couple preloved in great condition and much cheaper than brand new

Mercurial123 · 03/02/2018 16:28

I love mine and don't find it heavy. I've had it for eight years and still looks good. They are a classic design.

PseudoFred · 03/02/2018 16:31

There's actually one for sale at around £500 in a bag restorer/repair shop a few doors up from Mulberry. Looks brand new but obviously isn't (or is fake). I'm also lusting after the Bayswater double zip tote now too.Grin

I’ve got 2 ( I use one week days & the other on weekends) I bloody love them 😍 Yes expensive for a bag, but it’s my money and i can afford it so why the hell not.

It’s your money OP if you want it, why not treat yourself!

bakingbee · 03/02/2018 16:45

It's on sale here

mimibunz · 03/02/2018 16:52

I got an Oxblood Bayswater for my birthday and have used it everyday! It makes me feel polished and pulled together even when I’m looking scruffy. Smile

CantChoose · 03/02/2018 16:55

I have an oak and an oxblood. I use them daily and love them. My oak is totally knackered now though but cost per wear has been practically nothing. I can wear both of mine over the shoulder.

MinesaPinot · 03/02/2018 16:57

I've got one, it's about 8 years old now. It was (to me) a huge amount of money to pay for a bag and to be honest, I wish I hadn't. It's heavy before you put anything in it, the corners haven't worn at all well, and despite me putting protector on, it marked in the rain.

It's on the top of my wardrobe at the moment, as I haven't used it in a little while. I've got others that I prefer.

Every so often I have a debate with myself whether to sell it, but I always end up backing down. DH says if I'm not going to use it it's not worth keeping, and I know he's right....

franktheskank · 03/02/2018 16:59

I have it in oxblood and use it all the time, i don't wear bags over my shoulder anyway o sort of carry them halfway up my arm or just by the handles.

You won't regret buying it they're really lovely and great quality Smile

autumnkate · 03/02/2018 17:04

I’ve had mine for 7 years, use it for work, and it’s perfect. Cost per use is tiny

loobylou10 · 03/02/2018 17:06

I’ve got one in oak and am terrified to use it in case it gets stained/marked. Stupid I know. Those of you that say they’ve used them every day and say they now look better than ever, are they stained or have they just aged beautifully?

Talk some sense into me and make me use my beautiful bag ...

RiskIt4Biscuit · 03/02/2018 17:12

I think mine has aged beautifully - by getting stained and getting a patina from use.

Back when my bag was very new, I took it to work - and on the way home (on bike), it started pouring down. My bag got stained by the rain, and I was devastated (for a few days) because I wanted to keep it pristine. Today, I love that the bag has battle scars and patina and that it shows it has been used and loved.

It is supposed to age like this.

loobylou10 · 03/02/2018 17:33

Thank you Riskit. I def need to get a grip.

PNGirl · 03/02/2018 17:59

I have a printed (croc) oak Bayswater. It's five years old. While the leather has aged beautifully the corner piping wore away inside 2 years and I paid 50 quid for it to be restored.

I love mine but wouldn't pay the money again. My Rosemary (mini Roxanne) is indestructible, because it's over 10 years old and the manufacturing was better.

barefoofdoctor · 03/02/2018 21:27

It is a lovely bag and everydayish and casual but feels like a real treat. Buy it. Life is way to short!

Kitsharrington · 03/02/2018 21:38

What are they these days, £750? Do it.

PseudoFred · 03/02/2018 21:44

I wish! £995.

WhooooAmI24601 · 03/02/2018 22:11

I have one in oak and one in navy. I use the navy most for work (teacher) but they've aged really well and I love both. Coach does leather protector and cleaners that I've used religiously and they seem to last far longer if you give them some tlc.

When I had DS2 I switched to using Mitzy's more because of the cross body straps but the Bays will never be rehomed because I just love them.

CantChoose · 03/02/2018 23:25

Mine were about £850. I do think they are overpriced these days. Make sure you check it's a made in Britain one, the classic colours usually are.
