New thread for those hoping to add a bit of Parisian je ne sais quoi and je m'en fous to their style.

I have not succumbed to the Bobbies, but I did give way to temptation and bought the navy down peacoat, which means I cannot spend another cent outside Uniqlo or second hand for several months! The jacket is true love, though and in cost-per-wear terms it should get masses of use, like about 300 days a year.

Canters15 · 11/05/2018 05:10

Bonjour Parisiennes. I haven't been on for ages as life has been ridiculous recently.
I'm looking to buy a leather tote for every day and am stuck on colour. Black feels a bit...harsh? I want something that will go with everything, tempted by burgundy but will it be versatile enough?

TheGrumpySquirrel · 11/05/2018 06:32

What about grey? Or navy? I find those a lot more versatile than tan, nude or burgundy

peonylover22 · 11/05/2018 07:26

Are you in the southern hemisphere Canters? Going into winter? I’ve had a navy bag this past winter and it went with a lot. But I’ve also had a burgundy one in the past which went with a surprisingly amount.
What colour palette clothes do you normally wear? What colour are your coats, blazers etc?

OCSock · 11/05/2018 09:06

I had huge versatility from a mustard/yellow-ochre large sling bag with a mole-grey taupe base for several years, and still use it although I washed it in the machine when it was grubby and the dry cleaner wouldn't help, so it's a bit worn. It went with almost everything I owned. I mostly wear grey, navy, black and white, with some olive and a few brighter accents (of which the bag was one of the most useful).

TheGrumpySquirrel · 11/05/2018 09:52

Ahh I love a mustard yellow bag

Canters15 · 11/05/2018 10:01

peony I'm on the equator so hot hot hot! So no coats or blazers, and wear a lot of light colours. Grey might be a good option. I need something like a LV neverfull but not because that's what all the women here carry and I hate the obvious branding

TheGrumpySquirrel · 11/05/2018 10:22

What about the Saint Laurent tote/carryall?

peonylover22 · 11/05/2018 10:44

If you wear a lot of light colours, I think grey, navy or tan would be nice.
Saw this De Mellier tote on my own bag quest which may be a possible option.

IwankaTramp · 11/05/2018 11:00

I personally prefer tan with a neutral palette wardrobe as it goes with navy, black, white, grey, cream, taupe, olive, stone and camel. I like adding other tan accents in too to bring it all together like a watch or thong sandals.

peonylover22 · 11/05/2018 13:33

New red lipstick. alert: tried on Laura Mercier velour extreme matte in Dominate this lunchtime. Dreadful name Hmm but nice blue toned red on me. Didn’t actually purchase because out of stock in Space NK - that company had serious stock control issues in my experience- but will look to do so. Saleswoman did an awful job of applying it - totally lopsided. Was desperate to neaten it up once out of the store but as it was out of stock, had to frantically wipe it off instead. Difficulty wiping off suggests it might have good staying power.
Lots of other reds in the range including a more orangey one called Fire which might be good for those with warmer toned skin than me.

Canters15 · 12/05/2018 02:21

grumpy the saint laurent tote is exactly what I've been eyeing up Blush they have it in a charcoal grey on NAP which may work.

peony that bag is lovely, slightly more structured then what I'm after but gorgeous nonetheless!

I was wondering about tan but I have a tan Bayswater already and I fear if I got a lighter weight bag in that colour I'd never use it again (total brick of a bag!).

Thanks for the thoughts. Lots to ponder!

Fairylolly · 12/05/2018 05:50

I have a navy SL tote from a couple years ago. It is one of my most used bags - I love the non-obvious branding and simplicity. Can use it for work or weekends. I highly recommend it and the grey would be ideal.

quirkychick · 12/05/2018 08:12

peony thanks for the lipstick recommendation, I'm very cool toned too. I'm currently using (up) a freebie from Boots No7 that was one of their colour match offers, but when I use it up I may be looking for other options. I've just bought (not at all high end) a Rimmel dark red nail varnish Rapid Ruby for my toes. I haven't worn such a classic colour for ages, but it looks great. I only put colour on my toes, so don't usually bother with very expensive polish Smile. I do use Revlon top coat, though, which gives a nice shine and helps it last well.

I've just googled the saint laurent tote, gorgeous!

RosieLig · 13/05/2018 23:12

Still on the lightweight jacket search
I bought this

www.mintvelvet.co.uk/product/star-embroidered-pocket-jacket/15133

And this

www.jigsaw-online.com/product/linen-mix-military-jacket/J29577_BL010

Not sure which one to keep! Both good with a tee and jeans/shirt for a relaxed weekend look. My summer style is way more relaxed than my winter! Even the materials I wear tend to be softer and I prefer less structured clothes. Not sure why that is - I’m a lot smarter in cooler weather!

Canters15 · 14/05/2018 04:36

I'm going for the SL tote in charcoal! Eek!!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 14/05/2018 06:05

Ooh yay. I want one too

Yawningalldaylong · 14/05/2018 06:49

I've been catching up and thank god I've found you all. Have a meal for my husbands company coming up, it will be all Parisian stylish women so I really need some guidance.

ToElleWithIt · 14/05/2018 10:46

Floisme the linen jacket sounds lovely as does the peacoat OCSock

Lovely choice canters Have you pressed buy yet? The "large textured tote" is 25% off at NAP if you have access to the sale preview? Worth checking if you do. Tom Ford tote in black or white or a khaki which could be versatile? also 25% off.

Acne dress is lovely botemp

RosieLig I prefer the Mint Velvet one, both for shape and fabric. The Jigsaw one reads a little more bomber jacket to me.

Put the liberty voucher towards a very plain white cotton Dries top with interesting pleating detail on the neckline. I also got a green knit in American Vintage, that safari skirt from Arket and a black and gold skirt from B@sh. I didn't realise that they were in London. Styles were lovely, fabrics mixed and size range small. Think I'll wear the skirt with a black silk tee and heels to a wedding I'm going to. Does that sounds okay or will it be too dark?

Ok bags... peony my reject pile isn't quite that interesting. I thought this Chloe one could have been something for you but it's already been sold and was out of budget anyhow.

Others that are around/within your budget and size that I've come across:

A.P.C. has a couple, the Nelly, the Alicia, the June, and the Demi-Lune. Colours in varying shades from cognac-brown.

I've mentioned this brand before as doing a lot of dead ringers for more expensive brands. Never seen them in real life though.

Nico Gianni has a few options, think the Large Lovibia would be most in line sizewise.

That's all I could refind from a quick glance, I'm looking at a slightly higher budget and smaller size and I did purge a bunch of options in the process that I've lost memory of. I have to say cognac isn't that popular of a colour at the moment, I'm veering more towards brown myself as a result, thinking it will also carry into A/W.

Not within your budget, but very similar to the first picture you posted is the Mulberry Amberley. Perhaps something to seek out second hand? Or maybe Elle can tell us if it's in the NAP sale too?

Here's the link for the if all else fails stain removal for white silk, I mentioned previously.

Welcome, yawning, in your situation I would recommend staying true to yourself, as trying to out-Parisian a group of Parissiennes is probably doomed to failure. What industry (answer vaguely, if preferred) is your H in? Think that's where I'd focus on more as that varies wildly among the French and gives more of an indication what they will be wearing.

Do you have any pictures of them on you Rosie? They both look quite boxy, so it's probably my own body type aversion that doesn't have me warming more or less to either as they both would do me no favours and I hate stars.

Elle, sounds like you got some great pieces in London. There was a feature in Madame Figaro the other day on work dressing in hot(ter) weather. I really liked this dress from Ba&sh (pic 1). I have another dress from them that despite being quite low plunging in the chest is great for work and gets taken worn quite a bit, subsequently.

Funnily enough I was going to suggest looking at that Tom Ford tote too, for whatever reason the prices on their bags have been adjusted to more realistic levels as of recent so probably worth snapping up. I do not have pre-access to the NAP sale and am eyeing up a Victoria Beckham bag, when are the official dates?

Is black ok at weddings? I know white is generally a big no and red is controversial but I thought black during the day was also somewhat frowned upon? Full disclosure, weddings are a real rarity here so I hardly ever get to attend any.

I bought some things too, I was beyond delighted to pick up an H&M studio dress from S/S2017 on the UW app that I'd had an eBay search out on since last year. I'd tried it on and loved it but really needed a size smaller. It only ever came up at a ridiculous price so was pleased to bits to get a still new one for 32 euros (incl. shipping). Think I may have a picture of me trying it on somewhere on my phone too. Surprisingly it goes really well with my satin pointy slides/mules (whatever they're called, that I bought as indoor slippers) and my new hat from H&M. Another bargain at 5 euros, black straw with a flat top and black band (which is why I bought it, the round-topped ones don't look as great anymore for whatever reason, or I'm just in the mood for change, who knows).

Bought another hat at Zara, which briefly pissed me off for breaking my tepid boycott of them but it's a really nice hat and it matched the outfit I was wearing, always a danger. Needed a size smaller though, so ordered it online will be here in a few days. Will post pic from phone in a bit.

elle no access here either but that is a lovely bag. Now thinking I'll hang fire and see if any come into the sale proper.

botemp · 14/05/2018 12:32

Sorry, forgot to include this one for peony, but I think EUR/GBP conversions might make it out of budget:

ToElleWithIt · 14/05/2018 12:34

Can you see "seasonal pick" beneath some items on NAP? If so, they're the ones included in 25% off.

The Mulberry isn't included, but the APC demi lune and Betty are if they're big enough?

The work dress is nice, love the "belt" detail. The slit looks a bit perilous, but probably just how the model is standing.

Yeah the black may be a bit dreary, could do a white / cream top too, or maybe I'll just stick to more traditional wedding attire.

Rosie If it was me I would go for the Jigsaw jacket because of the length. The Mint Velvet one looks like it would end mid thigh which I can get away with if it's fitted and gives me a waist but if straight cut, it turns my legs into tree trunks. So now you have a vote for every option Grin

And now a Scary Trousers alert: I came across a Canadian brand in my favourite second shop - Kaliyana Some of it's a bit out there in both senses of the words and I wouldn't wear it all at once like the models do, but I really like some of the shapes. They remind me of Wall which I think closed a couple of years ago.

I can't see my trousers here as they'll be a previous season but they're probably closest to these only more sedate, with a proper waistband and no thigh length pocket, also in a sturdier cotton, probably from an autumn/winter collection. And about a tenth of the price. (I know I said I was being frugal but second hand doesn't count.)

Sadly it looks set to be a long distance relationship as there's a minimum spend of $1000 if you're in the UK plus no online returns. Shock

Hi
I would love to join ye on my quest to look more chic.
Any recommendations for petite ankle grazer trousers. I hate high or mid rise, so.low waisted if possible.
I ordered this jacket yesterday, fingers crossed it suits, as I love.
