New thread for those hoping to add a bit of Parisian je ne sais quoi and je m'en fous to their style.

<a class="break-all" href="https://thatsnotmyage.com/?b2w=thatsnotmyage.blogspot.co.uk/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ethical clothing and an interesting article. I thought Flo might like it, in particular, but the whole conscious and sustainable fashion message resonates for me. And some of the clothes appeal.

ProperLavs · 30/04/2018 15:45

I bought some of the heal lifts but as I feared the do not work with my very high instep. I basically all out of my shoes.

ProperLavs · 30/04/2018 15:47

heel even.

peonylover22 · 30/04/2018 16:09

The grey suede shoes have arrived. They are too small for my giant ugly sister feet, and 41 is the biggest size 😭 A shame as the style would be the perfect neutral shoe.
Will put in Bobbies order tonight to console myself...

Floisme · 30/04/2018 18:04

Thanks for that link Sock Wine I remember reading about Community Clothing - probably last year but the website wasn't up and running and of course I forgot. The ethos definitely appeals plus I'm drawn to functional, slightly androgynous clothing at the moment too so I've signed up for emails.

Good to see them reviving the wartime 'Utility' logo too - I used to have some lovely shirts that I found in jumble sales in the 70s but sadly I trashed them long ago.

peonylover22 · 01/05/2018 08:39

Morning! Does anyone have any ideas on how better to style this teal skirt? I really like it but hardly ever wear it as I can’t work out what to wear it with. I’ve tucked a black ribbed fine knit into it for want on better ideas and will add a gold necklace, the ubiquitous black suede courts and a strong lip once I get to work get my act together. But I feel like there are more interesting ways to style it? I prefer styles that accentuate my waist and don’t suit oranges / yellows / browns / pastels but otherwise open to any ideas!

The latest Sezane drop has just started, if anyone is interested. Trying to resist buying another pair of sandals (currently waiting in delivery of 3 pairs Blush)

quirkychick · 02/05/2018 16:08

OCSock great link, I like that blog and her style too.

peony nice skirt, no suggestions as to how to style it to accentuate your waist (as I don't), I'm sure someone with better knowledge can help.

SeaRabbit · 03/05/2018 08:56

Bonjour threadsters. I bought some Community Clothing jeans when they first launched and they have been really good, keeping their shape and colour well.

OCSock · 03/05/2018 11:34

Thank you SeaRabbit; it's good to have a first hand, informed opinion. I don't think I need any more jeans right now, although my local posh frock shop had a delectable navy peacoat jacket in a very thin down. I am repeating: "you don't need any more coats". And I don't, but am always tempted and this would be very useful.

peonylover22 · 03/05/2018 20:28

The Sezane order has arrived! All 3 items are keepers I think. The sandals are brilliant - v comfy already so I think they’ll get loads of wear this summer. Like both tops too - the red is a bit more orange than I’d ideally like but a nice colour for summer.
Had a crappy start to the day - trip to A&E with toddler peony (who is fine but I feel shit) - so nice to get a successful delivery today.

peony I like the skirt with the black top. A cream silk shirt would be nice with it too. Grey T-shirt and a chunky heeled sandal for a more casual look? Or the new Sezane white top? Tops looks good. Which sandals did you go for in the end?

I hope mini Peony is okay.

Grumpysquirell - navy heels and the black flats are fab.

Back from my trip. I found the Madewell concession, but wasn't hugely impressed tbh. I didn't buy anything there. I also checked out J Crew and Club Monaco who I usually think of as good for work wear, but again came away empty handed. I know J Crew is struggling lately and I can see why. It all felt a little bit stale. Club Monaco was full of synthetic fabric at inflated prices.

I did get 2 pairs of jeans though. One is mom-jean adjacent. I chickened out of full-on pair of Fiorucci mom jeans - these ones www.fiorucci.com/uk/tara-tapered-jean/10192.html?dwvar_10192_color=MEDIUM%20DARK#start=1&cgid=women-jeans Still find the shape hard to get my head around. I'm not sure if it suits me either!
Any thoughts on this skirt which I'm eyeing up at Arket?

botemp · 04/05/2018 12:05

Attempting to catch up, have been to Antwerp on Wednesday (due to unanticipated scheduling conflicts this weekend) but will post a separate 'me, me, me' post about it later.

Sock, thanks for the shoe indulgence encouragement. I think I'll hold out a bit for a discount as they'll be shoes that won't get worn that much. Although the constant narratives on here of 'I can no longer wear heels' has me determined to do it more often for as long as I can. I do really like them and my period of Lent is now officially over...

Welcome back Spudlet, perhaps not bargain pricing (but surely sales offers will start up again soon) but COS, Arket, Uniqlo and &Other Stories would be my first point of call. A few pages back I put up a few collages for another poster returning to work in the creative industry, may be of interest to you too?

Thanks for the Everlane heads up, open, probably a good thing I missed it...

I agree with Sock on the wide leg and footwear combo, you need really flat footwear, I quite like the ones in pic 1, incidentally from Everlane, or you go Palazzo style and your shoes barely show, so almond or round toe usually work well. However, for the cropped wide straight leg variety (which look crap on me) often need a chunkier trainer or brogue to ground it somehow and stop the hems looking like they're floating in space.

peony, I think navy and dark green always work well with teal (though, TPeony makes for a great accessory in that pic too, hope she's ok) but perhaps not so summery. Another colour that goes well with it is a sort of light cement that's almost white. It's a tough colour though as it reads darker in most fabrics so I'd look for a (washed) silk type. If you do manage to find some other suede grey heels, they'd go well with the ensemble. Were you the one who picked up some mustard ballerinas? How do they look with the skirt? Also, COS always has versions of teal/petrol in their collection and accordingly complimentary colours.

I've been eyeing the same skirt Elle and had screenshotted it. I fear it's too long for me but I do quite like it. Also saw some interesting sandals (pic 2, would probably also work well under wide legs) and other new bits at COS.

My TKMaxx has a lot of Club Monaco in at the moment, it absolutely baffles me, especially the prices, which are really high by TKMaxx prices but even if those were the RRP I'd be completely mystified how they presume to ask so much for terribly constructed pieces in cheap fabrics Confused Never really understood J. Crew either, but a lot of American brands aren't really my thing so I've always written it off as that.

Oooh did you go to the sample sales? envious

Those suede sling backs have a lovely shape at the front.

AuldAlliance · 04/05/2018 21:55

Just rushing in to say thanks to Botemp for the docs about friperies, etc. in Paris.
Sadly, the SNCF strike has put paid to my plans for a June trip up to the capital, but I'll squirrel the list away for another time.
RL is a bit grim here, and work is insane, but I am lurking and enjoying the posts.

Guys - warning on the bobbies shoes - turned up very quickly but clearly an ENTIRE size too small. Like a 38 is actually a small 37! And you can only return- not exchange. So if I want 39 I have to completely re-order. Also sadly one pair turned up badly scuffed - I will be complaining.
These are the only ones I'm thinking of re-ordering in 39:

Sorry for double post !

peonylover22 · 05/05/2018 09:34

Peony payday shopping report... My Bobbies order arrived yesterday too. Sent back 2 pairs of sandals - the gold pair were too spangly for me and the otter pair which sneaked into the basket at the last minute weren’t a great colour on my skin (wintery pale at the moment) and I found the leather bow tie on the ankle uncomfortable. However the cognac leather courts are keepers! I absolutely love them and think they’ll be very useful. Nice shape, high heel but my foot felt balanced in them. They looked nice with navy and indigo denim but sure they will go with lots, including the teal skirt. I am a definite size 8, on the wider side with rectangular feet. The size 42 were the right size for me. Unlike GrumpySquirrel’s experience, there were no quality issues with any of the 3 pairs I bought. I found the returns procedure straightforward too (and free).
Which is more than I can say for the l’exception scarf... Pinker than expected with raggedy ends. Felt like Accessorize quality at 4 times the price so I’ve returned it but it cost me more than £10 to do so Sad Lesson learnt: no international shopping unless there are free returns...
Thank you to Bo and Elle for the teal skirt colour combo ideas. Now the weather is warmer I’m going to try it with a cream silk blouse and the cognac courts. The grey suede shoes would have been perfect but were too small and size 41 was the biggest size Angry Please let me know if anyone spies round toe grey suede courts in a proper 8 / 42! The mustard ballerinas are a good colour with the teal but there’s something about the length of the skirt and shoes together that makes me feel a bit frumpy / extra large of foot. Think the ballerinas might be better with trousers. Will look out for the wet cement colour in shops although suspect it might be draining on me.
Very excited to hear about Bo’s Antwerp sample sales expedition! Expect to be feeling EnvyEnvyEnvy
GrumpySquirrel I really like those shoes. I hope the next size up are better.
Elle it’s a yes on the Arket skirt from me. Looks like it would be a good summer basic and you’ve got the legs for it. I got these Sezane sandals. I absolutely love them! Still looking for some basic gold sandals but think I’ve missed the boat on them this year.

PS Thank you for all the good wishes about ToddlerPeony. He is fine now and his cut and bruises are healing quickly.

addle · 05/05/2018 17:00

Delurking to thank you for these very enjoyable and inspiring threads and to ask for more information about the heel lifts?

botemp · 06/05/2018 11:09

peony, that's why I always try to use PayPal for international orders with their free returns service activated.

Oh and with cement, I meant more a white dry cement rather than wet grey. It's sometimes sold as bone white but that can often be quite oatmeal-esque when you search for it, it's basically white with a touch of grey rather than black (which gets you more in that greenish cream territory). Scandinavian brands usually have it as it suits their colouring and environmental light, Filipa K usually stock it too.

addle, they're these. I have both heights but the taller ones don't get used all that much and I don't know why they're significantly more expensive. I paid the same price for both, just didn't buy from Amazon. Or were you asking for other information about them?

The promised Antwerp Sample Sales post, which isn't as exciting as I probably made it sound by building it up with a delay. I was just too lazy to type it all out previously. Sorry no pics on account of communal changing rooms, and extreme busyness.

I'd never gone on the first day the big designers opened up shop, so whilst I'd experienced lines at Dries van Noten in years previously it was a little insane to have them almost everywhere and significantly longer. Ended up visiting less spots than planned as a result.

Anyhow lots of Asian tourists who came in right off the plane with giant suitcases (I've observed this in Paris too, it's a bit of an odd phenomenon, I initially thought they had empty suitcases with the intent to fill up but they've literally just arrived as security checks revealed). I've probably seen every horrendously fugly expensive Balenciaga sneaker on otherwise completely grungy international fashion students (which kind of gave me the hump as it means the excellent Antwerp fashion school now seems to be populated by fashion sneaker obsessives coming for the name check rather than being the very anti-mainstream fashion sort they used to be). Anyhow, I was cheered to no end by spotting a giant group of Sapes in the flesh at the Haider Ackerman sample sale, peacocking about in the shoe section, it was quite the sight.

As for purchases, initially I had been concerned my 'starvation' diet was going to end up in a massive binge but I was actually quite sensible, relatively speaking. I've included prices below not as some stealth boast, rather just to give insight into what the pricing is like for anyone ever considering if it's worth making the trip. On the whole I'd say sometimes you strike a huge bargain but for me the incentive is usually the unearthing of really unusual pieces you wouldn't find elsewhere.

Managed to talk myself out of three pope scandalising dresses, not quite sure what my draw to those is about Confused

Also some of the brands, especially the more commercial brands have changed their standard sample size from a 36 to 38, whilst other sizes are about the majority is always the sample size, but it actually meant there was very little available in my size. I'll refrain from complaining, I've done enough of it on here alone and it's definitely a luxury problem.

So I managed to pick up a really interesting/partially confusing white sleeveless t-shirt from Ann Demeulemeester. It has some ties in it and a double set of armholes but I'm pretty sure it's not a cold shoulder top as it renders you immobile if worn that way, as said previously it's a tad confusing, it can be worn by interpretation and I'm pretty sure I'm not wearing it the one correct way but it's an interesting piece and was a bargain at €25.

Also a bargain, picked up a fine knit jumper in a sort of green/brown/greige with an interesting raised detail on the sleeves that gives it a bit more structure for €10 from a brand I don't know, it's 90% wool and 10% cashmere and feels like good quality. They also had a few John Smedley fine knits there for the same price which all looked great but had some odd detailing that made me resist despite the ridiculously low prices. Didn't realise that was an all UK manufactured brand btw, the quality looked really impressive.

I bought the most fab pair of wideleg, sort of 40s trousers but with a distinctly modern cut at Dries van Noten despite initially being a bit mean about it as it didn't look that special on the hanger and I was being sniffy about the price (€150) as it's 'only' a linen and cotton blend until I tried it on and had to eat my words as the tailoring was beyond flattering and that sort of 40s khaki colour suddenly comes to life. And if that hadn't convinced me, two Italian women (who I'm pretty sure were fitting every single piece in the warehouse) started fawning over it from afar (in Italian, I don't speak it but understand it well enough). Instructions were immediately sent out to find it in their size. There was a really nice white mini skirt there too, but at €100 it lacked anything special at that price for me to take the plunge on it.

I also picked up a sleeveless silk LBD from Acne Studios (€70) that's also an interesting in shape as it's both fluid and structured in places and is one of those can dress up and down pieces so should be really useful and exactly the type of dresses that my wardrobe could use more of.

Not the sample sales but I managed to pop into Uniqlo hoping to see the Princesse Tam Tam colab, wasn't impressed with that at all unfortunately but they didn't have much of it. Was surprised to see the J.W. Anderson summer collection, it had completely escaped my notice that it's been launched. I tried on a few things, the sort of patchwork linen skirt is great, I'm just too short for it and it's not something you could take in all that easily. The wide leg linen trousers were nice too but they're not the best cut for me, but for those who like the more straighter cropped wide leg they'd make a good buy. I ended up buying a t-shirt with an interesting asymmetric panel on the front, it looks shit on the website but it's really flattering on me. Was quite surprised preferring the orange (it's more a brick than bright orange) over the sort of charcoal green.

Funnily enough, I did the thing that always seems to happen when I venture to the Antwerp sales, everything I bought all works together (the dress stands alone though). Especially the JW Anderson t-shirt tucked into (except the flappy bit) the Dries trousers is really surprisingly good and doesn't look like a throwback 70s thing either despite the colours.

Think I got it all, but that's the haul. I'll try to take some pics when wearing my new pieces in the weeks ahead Smile Looking to be really good weather for the next week and a half, is it the same in the UK?

RosieLig · 06/05/2018 12:02

Hi
What do people wear when it’s too chilly for just a t-shirt or a shirt but too hot for a proper jacket? Something casual just for nipping out in? To wear with jeans and a linen tee?

My workwear wardrobe and going out wardrobes are pretty good but I struggle with the chilled out weekend (kids, dogs) wardrobe....

I live in a cool climate so t-shirts/dresses are really only height of summer.

Thanks!

ToElleWithIt · 06/05/2018 20:43

Botemp now I definitely want to go pencils in for 2019. All your purchases sound really interesting.

rosielig how about a shirt over the t-shirt. Chambray maybe? A denim jacket, linen blazer or one of the little padded cropped jackets that IM Etoile does well? (Maybe they’re passé but I like them).

The weekends outfits. New sandals are seeing plenty of action. Any styling tips welcome.
First is stories dress (fabric not great but is washable and has pockets) so good with the kids. Dress is good with a chunky heeled sandal too. Wore with sunnier and red lippstick.

New jeans - maybe mom jean lite? Would like to try with a cream silk shirt. Trainers maybe better with these?
