New thread for those hoping to add a bit of Parisian je ne sais quoi and je m'en fous to their style.

Can you help me?

I’m going to St Tropez next month and haven’t a clue what to wear!

I’m a size 18 with big boobs and never lost the 5 months pregnant belly.

I’m scared of getting the evil eye from the locals who look down on fat people.

I just want something comfy for sitting in a cafe looking chic and people watching.

Any ideas?

BrightonCalling · 07/05/2018 08:02

@Sevendown
I worked for many years in the south of France and most locals just lived in black.

Get some black harem pants, black strappy sandals with a bit of sparkle and as for the top, I'm not sure what to recommend - how body confident are you?

Sevendown · 07/05/2018 08:46

I’d say I’m body confident but I need something that can hide a big bra!

botemp · 07/05/2018 08:50

Don't be so hard on yourself Sevendown, the people of St Tropez have other things to keep themselves occupied with than shaming tourists. The SoF in general sees a lot of different size and shapes, you'll hardly stand out. Do you have any height to you as a size 18 can be a very different thing at 5" vs. 5"11?

I'm assuming you're a bit of an apple shape now? Perhaps a long flowy dress which crosses over on your chest would be a flattering fit if you're okay with showing off your arms? I've attached some pics of a gown Adele wore some time back, not really for the dress code as that would be overkill but just to show the shape I'm referring to (albeit with sleeves). Black and muddy taupes accented with cream, oatmeal, or white are usually safe colours for the upscale Mediterranean destinations, especially in linen and washed silk fabrics. Good leather strappy sandals, I'd recommend a hat if you're able to transport that easily as the sun is pretty punishing down there.

Rosie a mid season jacket is actually one of my items missing from my wardrobe atm. I've been getting round it by layering over a chambray shirt or utilising blazers. It's a bit of a stop gap measure though. I used to rely on a red peacoat in gabardine cotton from Comptoir des Cottoniers but it's just too big for me now but it was kind of ideal as it could also withstand a light rainshower. There isn't much in the shops I've seen so far. A light colour leather jacket (cognac, tan, that sort of territory) can also be good but perhaps that's too warm? As I'm on a bike daily I need something a touch warmer on account of the wind.

I like the new sandals and jeans Elle, though it's probably the angle of the picture, I prefer the hem length on the left to the right, though they're probably the same Confused Have you had any success with folding it over, even just the once, not a full rollover? A trainer might need a touch more flesh in between?

Also, Seven, Mango Violeta (and their online outlet) is probably a good place to look at.

Sevendown · 07/05/2018 08:56

I’m tall yes, and a similar shape to Adele.

My upper arms are quite chunky so I tend to keep them covered but usually my reason for avoiding sleeveless is because my bra can be seen at the armpit.

ToElleWithIt · 07/05/2018 19:35

I love that dress on Adele. It suits her so well and the color is great.

I’ll try a micro turn up!

It’s the Met Gala tonight. I do love looking at the outfits and the theme:"Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination“ is very aligned with this thread! Hopefully more ecclesiastical inspiration and pope-scandalising inspiration.

botemp · 07/05/2018 19:59

Yes, that Adele dress is a proper masterclass in bringing dynamic lines and giving structure to a rounder apple/diamond shape. I've attached the pic of the original runway dress it's based on. It isn't as special on a straight up and down model IMO and that peplum really wouldn't have flattered Adele.

Who knew I was so Avant Garde in scorning the pope Halo

I do like the outfit parade for the Met Gala but it's been a bit dull the last few years and the themes aren't as fully embraced as they used to. I'll be curious to see what they come up with though.

Elle, forgot to mention previously, the next Antwerp sales are in the autumn, usually November.

I wore my new Acne Studios dress today as it's boiling and I had to be quite smart for a change, managed to take a pic later in the day, will post it in a bit once I've gotten it all feline again.

botemp · 07/05/2018 20:00

Ahem, it helps if I actually attach the thing.

Sevendown · 07/05/2018 22:22

Can I also ask what finger/toe nail colour would be best for St Tropez?

I’ve got the black sandals, thanks!

I don’t do jewellery or usually do my nails but think I should for my holiday?

botemp · 08/05/2018 08:39

It appears we have a new pope Grin think she'll be less scandalised by my dress choices than the last one Halo I have yet to have a proper look at them all though.

Seven, personally I'd go with clear or an opaque pink just to get that healthy nail look. I dislike how coloured nails can clash with certain outfits/accessories and if it chips whilst away it looks the opposite of groomed. Dior healthy nail glow is nice but IME works better on people who are cool toned. It looks ok on warm tones too but it reads more as a standard clear on those. The French are usually of the clear or red/burgundy school where it comes to nail polish.

There's a YouTube channel ILoveParis (that a lurker brought to my attention on here and I unfairly misstook for a different creepy stalker channel that once showed up on my feed), which usually documents Paris street style but there are a few St Tropez and Cannes videos on there as well, just search for "ILoveParis St Tropez" and you'll see them all.

I think the new pope will approve, bo Wink.

Adele just looks stunning in that dress, much better than the model. It reminds me of an article in one of the Sunday supplements which showed couture dresses on the catwalk and how real people (obviously extraordinarily rich, real people) wore them. Lots of extra layers, sleeves, more modest necklines. It was really interesting to see how well they were adapted to their clients' needs, styles and shapes.

peonylover22 · 09/05/2018 07:24

Love the sound of all your purchases Bo! Looking forward to seeing them combined with the rest of your wardrobe over the next few weeks. Love the picture of Adele in that dress too. Great colour on her and the shape and patterns are fantastic.
I wore the cognac Bobbies heels with teal skirt and cream silk top yesterday - no full length mirror at work but I snapped a picture of my reflection whilst out to lunch. Was very pleased with my outfit but sadly I got red ink on the top in the afternoon. Domage!. I think it’s ruined and wonder outfit is no more. Sad
The heels were so comfortable that I’ve bought 2 more pairs of sandals from Bobbies 🙈 A gold pair and a tan pair.

Meant to say, am on a quest for a new handbag. I am very picky so this is quite a lengthy quest.
Looking for a cross body bag in tan. Prefer a structured style with some sort of detail, not keen on lots of logos or obvious branding. Leather, not suede. Not too small. Minimum dimensions: 23cm wide and 17cm tall. Budget: up to £350 (could stretch to £400 if it was very nice)
My winter bag is the de Mellier pictured (but in navy). This Danielle Foster one would be perfect but it is too small.
Any suggestions? Would happily buy preloved if it excellent condition.

peonylover22 · 09/05/2018 07:34

Oh one last requirement (so picky!) I don’t like chain straps, so needs to be a leather strap.

Sevendown · 09/05/2018 08:29

Thanks botemp I watched that. Seeing videos is reassuring.

botemp · 09/05/2018 08:51

Great reflection there, Peony. The Bobbies are a great buy. I'm still navigating bags, also in similar colours and rejection of obvious branding and chain straps but haven't come across anything truly great yet.

Forgot I promised a pic before. Voilà, my new Acne Studios dress from the sample sales. Unfortunately the lighting washes out the dual materiality of it. The sides are a flowy silk which can be relaxed or tightened with ties in the back (concealed). For casual wear I'd probably wear it a bit looser with flat tan leather sandals, smaller bag and possibly a straw hat. Lovely elderly (proper) lady on the street insisted on calling me Audrey, who is the exact opposite body type to me but I'll take it. Always thought she was the personification of old school elegance.

Have you not been to the area before, or just St Tropez, Seven? It's not as intimidating as it's made out to be, it draws a bit of an odd international crowd (real estate project developer types with a lot of questionable money thrown in) but it's pretty down to earth. Make sure to have a Tarte Tropézienne whilst you're there.

Further down the coast in Portofino (which is absolutely stunning) it is a touch more intimidating but still nothing to get worked up about. Cannes is a bit dull and Monaco is surprisingly nice and people are very friendly.

Sounds like an interesting article quirkychick

I like the outfit peony What a shame about the blouse! My Bobbies sandals were comfortable out of the box too. I'm very happy with them.

I sure botemp will have some good bag suggestions. Danse Lente was mentioned before and I book-marked the page. They have one that might for the bill - it's 25 x 17cm

I quite like this Cuyana one too. It's a US label and I'm not sure about shipping etc, so it might not work www.cuyana.com/saddle-bag.html#miele

I enjoyed this nun-inspired outfit at the Met Gala although I also adored ogling the ornate creations. I also appreciate those who go all out, compared to some of the designers who just dial it in Anthony Vaccarello

I'm off to London. Any suggestions on what to wear to the theatre? I'm not a regular attendee. Is it pretty much anything goes?
I also have a voucher for Liberty so I'm looking forward to a browse there. Their loyalty scheme is very good. I only recall buying a pair of jeans, some make-up and a not too expensive dress there and yet I have a voucher for 75 pounds.

I also forgot to mention that I got a lovely new lipstick in Sephora when travelling - hourglass in shade "I crave". I'm impressed with the longevity given it's pretty creamy..

That's the bag I have in black, Elle Smile

I'll have to go through my reject pile as most get rejected on being too large on my frame but they may be good for Peony. I'll check back in with those later, also meant to add above, silk is pretty resilient so can take a bit of abuse in the attempts to remove stains. I have an article on it somewhere, will dig that up too.

OCSock · 09/05/2018 11:12

Very sorry to hear of the red ink, Peony, it was an excellent outfit. Stain removers might help and if the ink doesn't come out in the wash/dry cleaning, then it might be worth dyeing over it.

Today's Times 2 fashion pages featured some rather lovely summer jackets; I was smitten with
this in the article, but there are several others that appeal, just none as much as the quilted down peacoat I saw in local posh shop last week, but £300 is at the very top end of budget, which has in any case been lavished on lurid print shirts for SockJr. And I have made the error of looking at the Bobbies sandals...

OCSock · 09/05/2018 11:18

Good voucher for Liberty, Elle. Love that place, their ground floor used to be my go to place, for the cosmetics hall, perfumes and leather goods. An ancient Bill Amberg briefcase is still one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and an early 90s bumbag from Hervé Chapellier resides in the car (holding dog poo bags) but is suddenly, surprisingly on trend again, both Liberty.

quirkychick · 09/05/2018 13:18

Elle the couture article was a year or so ago, I think, but really interesting to see how the dresses were changed.

Peony maybe you need to buy more cream, silk tops Wink.

I may have got lost in the ILoveParis rabbit hole. I haven't been to Paris for years, but was pleased that I could recognise the Galerie Lafayette food hall.

peonylover22 · 09/05/2018 19:39

ToElle, yes anything goes at the theatre. Some people in jeans, some straight from work, some in more evening attire. Enjoy your trip to Liberty too - such a fabulous shop! Thanks for the saddle bag, it is a possible contender, but not sure it is The One.
Sock have you actually succumbed to the lure of the Bobbies sandals or are you still contemplating a purchase?
Bo, what a great dress! I agree with your neighbour that you are absolutely channeling Audrey in that dress, and she’s one of my style icons too. Will happily take a look at your reject pile although I don’t want anything too enormous either. Fussy fussy Peony.
The silk top is very sad indeed. Will try to remove stain but I’m not hopeful! Read an article suggesting using hairspray to get it out???

PinPon · 09/05/2018 22:32

Peony have you thought about dyeing the stained top? Looks like you could give it a new lease of life that way...

Floisme · 10/05/2018 07:32

I'm sorry about your top Peony. I feel your pain.

I've been following at the back so thanks for all the lovely links. Not had much to report, apart from a 1950s tailored linen jacket in navy which is rather fine. And a very handsome young man admired my trousers and asked me where they were from so I told him about the Uniqlo U range.

I've got everything that was on my list for summer so, aside from some new bras, I'm going to try and only buy second hand until at least September. However I'm probably going to need new specs so I'm hardly going to be frugal.

Re teal - I like it with purple and berry shades. I'm not wearing much colour at the moment, but when I do, I like to do it full-on.
