Small things that make a person look younger (sadly looking at celebs wondering how the hell they do it)?

I'm in my late 30's & have been shamelessly looking at celebs in their early 40's like Louise Redknapp who still have a youthful vibe & energy... Little things I notice about other fab stylish women older that me is that usually
they have long swishy, bouncy layered hair or a nice stylish bob
no noticeably grey hair
in very good shape
well fitting clothes, knows what suits them
subtle make up
Would love some more tips & I need to stop envying Louise Redknapp. I feel I look every one of my 38 years at present & look older than alot of women who are 10 years older than me! So please list what you think makes one look youthful & stylish. Thanks

Yes and I bought a jacket from my DD’s favourite shop Pullen Bear and I do think the styling is de-aging. It was a £20 hooded green jacket and worth every penny! That said it was a random purchase I don’t usually shop there myself

I’m 50 and have been looking for a new hair style, looking at Pinterest at celebrities over the age of 40, I’d say there won’t be many without Botox and fillers, plus professional makeup and freshly done hair.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 08/01/2018 16:22

I'm 44 and do a reasonable job of fooling folks I'm 10 years younger. I'm slim, 5'2, my hair is blond as it hides the grey better, long and layered and I wave it. I wear light make up, as heavy make up makes me look 50. I tint my eye brows. I moisturise, face and body, don't exercise much just tone my arms. I wear skinny jeans, t shirts and groovy boots. And I have little DC, so everyone assumes I'm younger!

This works for me as well. Although when I got pregnant with DS (at 41, got pregnant first month of trying) I read somewhere that pregnancy in your 40s is correlated to living to 100 so maybe if your bologically young enough to have kids in your 40s you just generally look young.

Bubba1234 · 08/01/2018 18:30

Botox is a great tool

BuzzKillington · 08/01/2018 18:30

Staying slim.

Good haircut and colour.

Good botox.

Staying stylish, but not muttony. Avoiding frumpy clothes like mum boots with bootcut jeans.

Which products from the ordinary do you rate please? ?! Thanks .

BuzzKillington · 08/01/2018 18:41

Another fan of The Ordinary here.

I have a box just arrived. Can't even remember what I ordered. may have been drinking

specialsubject · 08/01/2018 19:32

Longer hair. Invisible makeup - thick red and black adds years. No hair dye.
Smile. Clothes that fit. Shoes that don't hurt. No piano teeth.

No florals, huge handbags.

And from the 70 year olds I know that look younger - not being fat. Sorry.

Loonoonow · 08/01/2018 19:51

I look young for my age. Being short is a big part of that. Also subtly whitened teeth, light Botox, shiny flippy hair, shortish, dark coloured manicured nails, keeping makeup light and wearing casual clothes.

If money was no object I would also have

Good hair extensions - for body and volume not length, too many women on tv have obviously fake, long curly blonde extensions that give an aging Barbie affect (se QVC for many examples)

Light lash extensions are great for opening up the eyes and framing the face. Conversly very heavy fake lashes give a dowager/drag queen look.

A breast reduction. Mine are huge (30ff on a very short body) and it is so matronly looking.

Things I would never ever wear because IMO they are aging are

Matching necklace and earring sets, tasteful scarves to liven up an outfit, a very neat Mum bob, brooches, pretty floral dresses. My 20 something colleagues and children can rock all these but on a 50+ woman they give a Queen Mother look.

leccybill · 08/01/2018 19:55

Disagree about heels.

My boss is 8 years younger than me and wears court shoes with tan tights and polyester Next shift dresses.
I used to dress like this too but changed my style after DD to cigarette pants with brogues, fitted hip-length jumpers in a small range of colours I know suit me.
Some colleagues say I look 'cute' and 'funky' which I'll take at the age of 38!

Bimbler · 08/01/2018 19:59

There are unfashionable flats and there are unfashionable heels. So I don't really take anything from flat shoes are more youthful/heels are more youthful.

Gottabenow · 08/01/2018 20:04

It’s time, effort and money.

Have you noticed the make up artists rushing on in breaks on live shows to touch up the celebrities make up so they look perfect? That’s not the real world is it?

On a working day it’s all I can manage to brush my hair once in the morning, dab on a bit of make up and go. I don’t check my reflection or redo my lipstick or hair all day.

Thirtyrock39 · 08/01/2018 20:28

Wow Louise looks really good in some of the most recent photos. She is naturally blessed with really good, delicate features plus great smile and big blue eyes so she's got great genes to start with plus a good tan, really good hair colour and the photo I saw where she def looks early 30s she has straight really shiny hair that looks much more youthful than the wavy hair she had circa strictly .

Fosterdog123 · 08/01/2018 20:41

Anyone under the age of 45 and especially anyone in their 30s, looking younger is ease-ee. Just wait a few more years....

Kate beckinsdale looks incredible. She has obviously had Botox but she MUST have had some fillers of some description but they're impossible to see, even in close up. You can however see her hair extensions.

Framboisier · 08/01/2018 20:53

'Small things' that make celebs look younger ?! Easy - needles! Tiny things in fact!
And all the other help that money can buy. We'd all look fantastic if we spent all that time and money on our appearance

Barbie1 · 08/01/2018 21:03

Skin care therapist/ makeup artist here.

There are a few things one could do to make themselves look more radient (note I didn’t say younger because that would take time, money and lots of energy!)

Water....it’s true. Keep hydrated. A dehydrated skin looks lacklustre, and will age you instantly.

Exfoliate/ dermaplaning. Keep on top of any dead skin that will make you look dull and dry.

Brows. Hair fades as you age and it’s no acception on th brows. A tint will make hairs look fuller and frame your face for a more youthful look.

Like wise with Hair. A few highlights will add movement and volume.

What's up with looking your age? In fact, what's the issue with looking older? Looking "old" (whatever that means) isn't synonymous with haggered etc. I saw an old lady today who was rocking it. Yes, she looked every day of her age but she looked great!

Why do we need to try and look younger than we are? Can't we just own our age and just look good? Not "look good for our age", just "look good".

I'm 38. Right now I'm aware I look awful but tbh I'd look awful even if I was 28!

For me, looking good, is often about hair. If you have well kept hair in a colour and style which suits, then chances are you'll look good. My hair is not good right now!

I dunno about Louise Redknapp. I used to think Jennifer Anniston looked great but she seems to have jumped aboard the anti-aging nonsense and it's not doing her any favours.

Either way, you can't compare yourself to pics in a magazine because they are fantasy.

Sunbeam18 · 08/01/2018 22:00

Is eyeliner ageing? I had no idea, maybe that's where I'm going wrong Blush

Nettletheelf · 08/01/2018 22:01

Magazine photos are photoshopped, I thought everybody knew that?

I’d put money on every female TV presenter over the age of 40 having had Botox, and some of the younger ones too. Not that there’s any shame in Botox. I’m considering it for incipient corrugations between my brows (46 and have escaped wrinkles so far through sheer luck...genes mostly).

Re celebs’ ‘little things’ (and I laughed at Framboisier’s quip about the needles): it’s all about the money and leisure time. More sleep, expert beauty and hair, somebody to chase you around a gym and force you to work out. I had a few months off work last year. Got all the sleep I wanted and had weekly personal training sessions. I never looked better. I’m on the slide now I’m back to the early starts, commuting stress and long days, like most people!

Bimbler · 08/01/2018 22:07

It depends on the eyeliner Sunbeam. Lining the lower rim in black eyeliner (like Kate Middleton used to be fond of doing) can look quite harsh and unflattering.

Ilovetolurk · 08/01/2018 22:19

As I’ve got eyelid droop as I am aging I have gone back to eyeliner. Black flicky eyeliner gives a youthful lift and I don’t suit eyeshadow now as it is hidden under the bags Hmm

Plenty of lengthening mascara

All upper lashes and lids only

I am another one whose eyebrows were plucked to death in the 80s . I fill them in with benefit gimme brow which adds fibres to fill them out

goose1964 · 08/01/2018 22:23

I'm 53 and people think I'm at least 10 years younger. I put it down to genetics, both my grandmothers looked younger than they were as do my aunt's (at least my mum's sisters) some of my cousins . I have few wrinkles and no crowsfeet. I have few Grey's.

Delatron · 08/01/2018 22:33

God I need mascara. Though top lashes only. Soft eyeliner.

Botox is just the norm now to the point (annoyingly) that even a few lines on the forehead are ageing as we are used to seeing women right up to their 50/60s on tv with no lines. I'm going to have to submit!

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2018 22:35

I think weight is very aging on both men and women. So staying a slim weight but importantly being fit and toned is always perceived as more youthful, than overweight after a certain age.

Hair needs to not be grey but dyed naturally.

Longer hair I find is softer on most women, but it needs to not be just hanging their or poker straight, it needs to look full. Short hair is stunning on many women but for some can be aging, I'm one of them.

Eyebrows filled in, naturally though, with a eyebrow powder just lighter than your own, if they are sparse.

Natural makeup, dewy foundation, a good mascara and light line eyeliner on upper lid to fill in gaps between lashes, and a natural blush and lipstick.

Clothes that give a nod to fashion but aren't too young for you and that fit you well, not overly tight or all baggy and well, old lady ish.
