Managing curly hair

Does anyone have any tips on managing curly hair?
Mine is very fine but lots of it. I’ve been using Tresemme bontaniques shampoo and conditioner for about 6 months and it’s noticeably more curly now but still prone to frizz and I can’t get a second day out of my curls without starting again after I’ve slept on it.
I’ve looked at curly girl methods and cannot for the life of me understand how people have time for all of that and I couldn’t live without shampooing my hair.
What do other people do?

  1. A good cut. I always tell my hairdresser not to bother with layers, as they just stick out.
  1. Lots of conditioner when I wash. I have to work quite hard to find one that suits. (Currently on Garnier Ultimate Blends Sleek Restorer.)
  1. I then mix conditioner with Boots Curl Creme in my hand (10p piece size of each), apply after washing my hair, comb through, wrap in a towel for a bit and then let it air-dry. Sometimes I coil my hair up while it dries for extra oomph. I may have to "de-crisp" once dry because of the curl cream, but that's easy enough, I just scrunch with my hands.
  1. Day 2 I can dampen my hair slightly (just using my hands at the sink), apply a little conditioner again and that restores the curl. Or I wear my hair up and just re-do the fringe.
  1. Minimal combing, I use a wide-tooth comb to de-tangle. No brushing, ever. If I need to re-do my hair during the day, I dampen and then fluff with my fingers.

HTH!

I do curly girl but it's fairly quick!
Did a final wash with a sulfate shampoo (no silicones)

Now I wash with as I am co wash, condition with shea moisture low porosity conditioner and leave a bit in. I add cantu curl activator and cantu custard then scrunch out the crunch when dry. Washing takes maybe 10 mins including applying all products and I get 3-4 days out my hair (admittedly it's tied up on day 3/4) but it's dry and thick, never goes greasy. I don't use shampoo ever, sometimes I swap to cantu co wash

Use mousse!

CoteDAzur · 29/12/2017 09:11

I use Body Shop "Rainforest" shampoo & conditioner - recommended on here. No sulfates, no silicone, etc. They are really great.

Wring in towel when wet, apply curl cream, twist curls with fingers, then leave to dry on its own.

Next day, wet a bit, twist curls again, and leave to dry.

No combs or brushes at any point.

LuluBellaBlue · 29/12/2017 09:23

As above - only I never ever brush only with fingers with conditioner. Also I scrunch products in rather than brush them through, find it gives a better curl and less frizz.
Also try using an old t shirt to scrunch dry rather than a towel, again less frizz.
Finally always sleep with pineapple hair! Loose poney-tail on the top of your head for a bam-bam look Grin

I use coconut oil and leave to soak for 2-3 hours prior to shampoo. Then detangle with leave in conditioner and followed by oyx serum. Let it dry under a microfibre towel and that’s it. Job done for the week.

The trick with curly hair is to only wash it once a week.

ElfrideSwancourt · 29/12/2017 10:28

I find curly girl method far quicker- I use Waitrose essentials normal hair conditioner (about £1 a bottle and often on 3for2) bung loads on scrub it well onto my scalp then comb through with wide-tooth comb. Leave it on while I wash the rest of me, then rinse out thoroughly.
I then put a bit of the same conditioner on the ends of my hair and some product (this varies) and wrap it up in microfibre hair towel.
My hair lasts far longer and is in so much better condition as is my scalp. My hairdresser always comments positively.
I only shampoo it, with SLS and silicone-free shampoo, when I do my roots, every 6 or 8 weeks.

Skinfulnappies46 · 29/12/2017 10:45

Watching with interest as mine used to be corkscrew curls and thick. Now after 5 children it has become much looser and fine. I just would love a tighter curl especially at the sides and no frizz.
Anyone else in the situation? Does this sound like you OP?

goose1964 · 29/12/2017 14:46

I have some organic shampoo that doesn't foam.Ive only used it a couple of times but my hair is more controllable.

Pandoraslastchance · 29/12/2017 14:49

My 3 girls are very curly. We use Superdrug coconut conditioner to wash their hair and then we comb more conditioner through it whilst still wet woth a wide toothed comb.

The little two have Cantu curl cream but the oldest hair doesn't like it for some reason.

You really do bave to experiment to find which one works for your hair.

Arronsmissus · 29/12/2017 17:12

Tigi Curls Rock Catwalk works well for me. Second the advice to get a good cut - if your near London go to Unruly near Latimer Rd tube. They are brilliant.

The best advice I got from them was to diffuse-dry your hair from almost dripping wet, don't towel dry. For me this keeps the curls whole and bouncy.

GreenTulips · 29/12/2017 17:19

Afro comb quick spray with water and leave to dry naturally

JennyOnAPlate · 29/12/2017 17:28

I do the curly girl method. I would really recommend that you ditch the shampoo altogether; it makes a huge difference to moisture/frizz levels!

Leave lots of your conditioner in your hair rather than rinsing it all out. Wrap it in a microfibre towel for a bit and use some gel or curl cream (I use olive oil eco gel which I buy off amazon)

I only do this routine twice a week with no need to do anything to my (very thick and curly) Hair in between. It takes up a lot less time than before curly girl.

Ilikesweetpeas · 29/12/2017 17:34

Looking for ideas as my curls are currently frizz. However I may have had too short a hair cut which hasn’t helped...

kktpj · 29/12/2017 17:39

No sulphate shampoo. Loads non sulphate conditioner. Oil on damp hair. No brushing ever...wide comb on almost dry hair. Minimal hairdryer use.

Gah81 · 29/12/2017 17:40

I have fine curly hair and lots of it, like you (and bright red! It is super easy to pick me our of a crowd Grin)

I wash and condition as usual. Coconut oil on the ends, leave-in conditioner all the way through.

Blow-dry 80% there then put my hair up in pin curls, let the rest dry naturally. Take it out and use hairspray and you have manageable, sleek curls! (Until the rain gets you, of course).

BobbinThreadbare123 · 29/12/2017 17:44

Chopped it all off. No length, no curls to manage. Just gives me volume and texture. Wash each morning, leave to dry. Voila!

Hulder · 29/12/2017 18:21

Also v fine hair but lots of it.

I do curly girl and my hair has never looked better. Curls can now look like 3C when previously on a bad day they would be 2A. Personal opinion is that fine hair can't manage on co-washing and you do need a sulfate-free shampoo, not just co-washing with conditioner or you get so much build up your hair is weighted down and looks dreadful.

My hair hated Bodyshop Rainforest and looked like dried up straw but I know lots of people on here swear by it.

I wash with sulfate-free shampoo, then conditioner - lots. Rake it through my hair and get out all the tangles. This finger combing is all the combing I ever do - I don't comb or brush my hair ever. Then curl cream on soaking wet hair followed by gel and scrunch like crazy. Wrap up in towel dream of microfibre towel which is meant to keep more curl in then either leave to dry naturally or diffuse. Attempt not to touch hair while drying except to scrunch up a bit more or twirl a few curls round.

Second day - wet hair a bit, run more curl cream through and scrunch up. Leave to dry and loads more curls again.

Didn't think it was possible for me to have this many curls my whole life but I do! I get all my products online from British Curlies - so far have loved Jessicurl and Boucleme. Am not sure which brand you pick makes much difference as they are all using much the same things.

Honestly this takes me very little time - no brushing, no combing, no styling, no heat, hair usually dries in the car on the way to work. Gel and cream takes a minute at the end of the shower. Plus my hair doesn't even need washing as often - it used to need washing every day - now it's twice a week.

Parmesanity · 29/12/2017 20:56

I have fine curly, mid length hair but lots of it. I wash with no sulphate shampoo after the gym twice a week max, condition every morning in shower.

After shower I spray with a leave in conditioner and wrap in an old tshirt while doing make-up. I then run through gently with fingers and apply small amount of Boots pink curl cream or Cantu cream to mid and ends of hair.

I leave it to dry naturally while getting breakfast and DCs ready then finish it with warm diffuser through roots. A spray of Elnet helps keep the damp weather from frizzing my hair.

CactusCactusCactus · 29/12/2017 20:59

Wide tooth comb when wet in shower, the microfibre towel, then scrunch with product. Took me so long to get to this!

Re products think you just have to try various.

Have not solved second day problem yet. (Can't sleep with pineapple)

WifeofDarth · 30/12/2017 10:48

Great tips on here i'm going to try. Having done sulphate and silicone free for over a year my curly hair looks great on day 1 of a wash but then looks like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards! Am looking for the perfect curl creme (was using boots own but have heard it's very drying which I don't need). suggestions welcome.
Am going to make appt w Unruly and see if they have any ideas.

ConjugalHoliday · 30/12/2017 12:36

@WifeofDarth try to see Claudio at Unruly if you can. He gave me the best cut I've ever had.

WifeofDarth · 30/12/2017 13:01

Thanks conjugal. Have already called them today but they are closed til new year. Will see if I can book next week. Really need new product but will wait til my appt to see what they recommend
