Managing curly hair

Does anyone have any tips on managing curly hair?
Mine is very fine but lots of it. I’ve been using Tresemme bontaniques shampoo and conditioner for about 6 months and it’s noticeably more curly now but still prone to frizz and I can’t get a second day out of my curls without starting again after I’ve slept on it.
I’ve looked at curly girl methods and cannot for the life of me understand how people have time for all of that and I couldn’t live without shampooing my hair.
What do other people do?

It's in stock in all my local stores. Might be worth driving out to stock up. It was on 3 for 2 in the Autumn so I have enough for my son but my eldest has a lot of hair.

You can check in store availability here...

Those of you who don't brush, does it not go into dreads?

Dd2 (aged 5) has fine curly hair and it has a tendency to dread very easily at the back. We only wash it about once a week, but then brush with a tangle teaser while wet & dry, and also brush other days t get knots out. She's probably 3a, but quite fine.

Am I doing it all wrong? Should I just stop brushing and only use conditioner? She's 5 so not particularly patient!

OneMoreOne · 05/01/2018 18:37

I only comb, and when wet with conditioner on. If I don't I get dreds very quickly.

OneMoreOne · 05/01/2018 18:37

And wide tooth comb!

Im looking to let my curls loose again. I did the curly girl and ditched sulphates and shit. It worked great. I just got frustrated with the fact that id need to wet my hair fully to reset it the next day, otherwise id look like i hadnt touched my hair in months!

I went back to straightening and i think of all the damage i am doing after all of my hard work. So how can i stay curly without having to redo my hair from scratch daily, without pineappling because i just cant do that

Skinfulnappies46 · 05/01/2018 20:10

Re the pineapple at night....surely your hair needs to be very long to do this and does it not straighten the back and sides?

mathanxiety · 06/01/2018 05:37

No dreads here. Don't know why. My curliest DD was actually the reason I sought out some help dealing with curly hair when she was about 5 - getting her ready for school was like pulling teeth both for me and for her. With CG I only conditioned her hair in the shower, then let it air dry, maybe twice a week. She pulled her own fingers through it to detangle a bit in the shower. We didn't touch it apart from that. She is almost 20 now. Neither of us has used shampoo for 15 years.

Nctothisfornow - I am living in a part of the world that is experiencing a brutal cold snap at the moment and have gone without washing my hair in the mornings a few times if heading out for a 7 am start to work. I don't like feeling my damp hair freeze and I don't like getting up before the rooster two doors up.

I have found a compromise. What I do is lean right over, stick my fingers into my hair at the roots, lift it out from my head and give it a kind of a shake, all over. I then spritz it with a food grade glycerin/water mix and then spray it with lavender body spray in and amongst it, while still leaning over. If I have flattened any particular patch while sleeping, I can wet it more than the rest and then scrunch.

CG made my hair feel gloopy and horrible like it hadn't dried properly.
Everyone's hair is different and it takes a while to find out what right for your hair. I wash mine every 4/5 days, use different ones but at the moment it's Tresemme Botaniques. Then use conditioner as a serum (about a grape sized lump) followed by V05 mega hold gel and dry with a diffuser. On non wash days I soak it in the shower and use products, dry with diffuser. My hair is collar bone length and ringlety curls. I never brush it, just run my fingers through it when I'm washing it and I don't get mats.

Chap’my hair feels the same if I leave conditioner in (even the tiniest bit) so I started not leaving any in. Absolute convert now.

chapthedoor · 06/01/2018 11:30

The t shirt thing made my hair feel disgusting and waterlogged. It looked ok but I felt dirty. I can leave some conditioner in but only a small amount. Too much and it goes a bit flat

ftw · 06/01/2018 13:23

Oh, I don’t do that bit either. I basically do co-washing with approved ingredients... 😀

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 06/01/2018 13:58

I don't do "plopping" either. I think my hair is too short. I tried it but it pulls some bits straight and generally makes it an odd shape.
I twist mine into ringlets, allow to dry naturally as much as I can, and then blast with the diffuser while my head is upside down to give a bit of lift at the roots. Then just smooth and put a bit of R&B (from Lush) on any fluffy bits.

I had to find out for sure about the Boots Curl Cream as my daughter relies on it but I'm pleased to report it's not going anywhere Smile

Nctothisfornow

My son used to have longer hair and the only time it looked amazing was straight after he had been swimming. I used to drench it with a spray bottle in the mornings but I could never achieve the same effect.

Skinfulnappies46 · 09/01/2018 16:11

Getting great tips here. Anyone tried the Umberto Gianni scrunching jelly? Next purchase will be new hairdryer and difuser once frugal January over

Aurea · 09/01/2018 16:26

When I was a teenager my hair fell into beautiful spiral curls with no effort or product.

Over the next years my hair kept getting progressively less curly and frizzy until it was nearly straight. I kept trying new products layering on one mousse or another, trying to recapture my curls of days gone by.

I read about a hair detox, and purchased a 100% natural shampoo with ingredients of simply coconut based surfactant, Malden sea salt, aqueous tinctures of melon and cucumber and chamomile and vitamin E. After two weeks or persevering my hair is back to its form glory.

I can only deduce that all the silicones and plastics I had been applying over the years to encourage my curls, where actually doing the opposite.

I now wash and conditioner and leave to dry naturally and I'm one happy bunny!

Skinfulnappies46 · 09/01/2018 18:37

Wow Aurea ! That's amazing. Coould you tell us exactly what you have been using. Mine has gotten straighter too and would love to regain my ringlets!!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 09/01/2018 18:41

Aurea what is the shampoo? Sounds amazing!

Drainedandconfused · 09/01/2018 19:05

I’m a natural corkscrew curly and wash once a week, the longer I leave it between washes the curlier it gets. I wash with any shampoo and conditioner, after I have towelled off the excess water I liberally spray frizz ease curl spray all over, scrunch a little boots curl creme in and diffuse with my head upside down. I was given a tip by my hairdresser on how to revive curls.....it’s odd but it works. Fill your steam iron with water, set to highest temp and blast the steam button onto your hair then scrunch upside down, it really works and takes 2 minutes every morning.

marmitecheesetoast · 09/01/2018 19:11

Ooh gillybeanz who is the Manchester based curly hair specialist you speak of? I gave up trying to find a decent curly hairdresser in Manchester a while ago!

I did CG for a couple of years and it generally worked wonders for my hair. Since getting pregnant and having DD last year though it stops seeming to have worked for my hair which has got really dry and unmanageable so I’ve been experimenting with non-CG friendly products with a bit of light brushing and trying to go for a more wavy than curly look ... it’s not really working! Think maybe I need to get a decent cut and then try CG again!

Skinfulnappies46 · 09/01/2018 19:22

aurea googled that shampoo and the only one I could see was a dog shampoo with exactly those ingredients 🤔

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 09/01/2018 19:39

I've found the dog shampoo! That must be it?!

Aurea · 09/01/2018 20:27

The lady who makes the dog shampoo does a formula for humans as well. You can join a Facebook group allnaturalpet and look in the files and order human products. She makes to order in numerous gorgeous natural fragrances, I like Palma violet . It really does work, I promise but it takes a couple of weeks to detox before it starts to look good. No products, or anything else in the meantime and mine looked worse before it looked better. It also dries in half the time as silicone doesn't weigh down the hair shaft.

I hate photos of me, but here it goes after a month of new hair routine. The before photo would have been a frizzy mess.

I think it costs £6 for 500 ml shampoo and £7.50 for the conditioner.

Hope this helps someone.

Your hair's lovely Aurea! I'm not on FB though - can I just email the website for the human one? I want to try it - you're a good advert!
