Managing curly hair

Does anyone have any tips on managing curly hair?
Mine is very fine but lots of it. I’ve been using Tresemme bontaniques shampoo and conditioner for about 6 months and it’s noticeably more curly now but still prone to frizz and I can’t get a second day out of my curls without starting again after I’ve slept on it.
I’ve looked at curly girl methods and cannot for the life of me understand how people have time for all of that and I couldn’t live without shampooing my hair.
What do other people do?

I use the cantu shampoo, conditioner and curl cream. Wash and condition hair, put curl cream in and scrunch it up with a tshirt to dry it a bit, a tshirt makes it less frizzy than a towel for some reason!

Ohyesiam · 30/12/2017 15:27

I do curlry girl, which is quicker as cuts out a stage.
I wash twice s week Max, and rejuvenate it in the morning with steam, which is like brushing for curly hair, in that it gets it all perfect looking. I hang my head over the kettle, and my kids say I'm boiling my fleas.

lasttimeround · 30/12/2017 15:35

Another vote for cg being the quickest thing all in. Wash twice a week. Otherwise refresh. Better hair.

Skinfulnappies46 · 30/12/2017 16:36

Would love to see photos of all your curls to give me some motivation to stop straightening mine and go curly again!

BeastOfChristmasIsland · 30/12/2017 17:17

This is my hair, photo was taken in August this year. I do CG; I wash it every 3rd day, wrap it in an old t-shirt for about 20 minutes straight after washing and then let it air dry. I refresh it with water and conditioner on non washing days and pull it up on top of my head at night. I use a variety of Tresemme Perfectly Undone conditioner, Waitrose own brand conditioner, Noughty Wave Hello conditioner, Umberto Giannini pink curl jelly stuff and Boots mousse in the pink tin.

I generally do CG method ..have recently invested in a decent silk pillowcase as my hair isn't long enough to pineapple at night , it has made a lot of difference to frizz in the mornings.
Have also recently started using mixed chicks leave in conditioner which is great.

kateandme · 30/12/2017 18:02

argan oil when damp and dried.
those frizz ease serum again when damp and when dried
these have both really helped me.

PocketCoffeeEspresso · 30/12/2017 19:55

DS2 has curly hair. We rarely wash (perhaps once a fortnight), then use an intensive conditioner as a leave in.

In the morning I give it a squirty with water and run my fingers through to ringlet it back together, and every couple of days add some more leave-in conditioner.

I'll have to look into the silk pillowcase idea though - he get a little matted horn at the front....

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 30/12/2017 20:06

I co-wash with non silicone conditioner or Aveda co-wash and use avocado oil to style. I've completely ditched styling products after trying every one that promised no-frizz! Avo oil (NOT coconut though!) has finally given me the curls I want.

My hair has never been better since ditching traditional shampoo and products! I started treating my hair like a 'delicate silk camisole', on the advice of my curly hairdresser, and it really, really works.

Skinfulnappies46 · 30/12/2017 20:08

Wow beautiful hair beast!

Mulch · 30/12/2017 20:12

Try to go as long as possible before washing. Oil before wash, curly products such as cantu. Never dry only brush when wet. Sleep In protective styles. If you find a good hairdresser stick to them

noeffingidea · 30/12/2017 20:39

I have to wash mine frequently because I go swimming. I just use a tiny amount of shampoo, then conditioner. Rinse then wrap in an old tshirt. Comb with a wide tooth comb, fluff with fingers and dry naturally. The only other thing I use is argan oil, but only every 3 days or so.
Mine is layered, because it's only the ends that curl really, but it's thick so it's probably very different from yours.

Curlybrunette · 30/12/2017 22:28

I've got thick curly hair, not quite afro but not far off and have found that it doesn't seem to matter which shampoo and conditioner I use (I've been using Argan oil S&C for a while now though £1 each in my local pharmacy!). The only thing that makes my hair look good, and not just total frizz is mousse, and lots of it. No serum or any other styling product works for me.

Also I have to brush it through after washing with a paddle brush, small sections at a time. There is no way I could get my fingers or an afro comb through my hair, the knots just wouldn't come out.

becotide · 31/12/2017 00:03

CHeapest available silicne free shampoo and condirtioner, squeeze dry in towel, MOUSSE (nobody seemsto use thios any more, it's great for find hair that looks greasy easily) and then air dry

Mrscaindingle · 31/12/2017 01:50

To make my curly hair last more than one day I tie it up in a loose sort of pineapple on top of my head with a scrunchie and can sometimes get 4 days after a wash. It does have to be loose though and long enough to tie up.

boingbat · 31/12/2017 10:55

I follow Curly Girl Method too. I went for years thinking I had terrible frizzy hair, turns out it's not too bad, once I ditched the shampoo and silicones. There's a Curly Girl Facebook group which is full of tips and support.

Trooperslane2 · 31/12/2017 13:20

Can't read full thread now but my hair is fucked after a series of unsuccessful pregnancies, IVF and DD born 4 years ago.

If anyone on this thread knows a hairdresser in Glasgow that knows what they're doing with curls, please let me know! I'm going to do the curly girl method (NY resolution) otherwise I think I'm going to have to go short, which I dread (and don't really suit) and dd's hair is BEAUTIFUL AND SHE HAS STOLEN MY CURLS

On the other hand, recent hairdresser told me that it can take up to 6 years to get your hair back, so FX I have hope.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 31/12/2017 13:31

Troopers my SiL gets her curly hair cut in Glasgow (I think). If I'm right, I'll find out and PM you.

ggirl · 31/12/2017 13:46

there are some pros to curly hair

  • I don't care about getting caught in the rain
-less time styling it..i just dampen and give it a shake ,wash twice a week
AnnaMagnani · 31/12/2017 17:04

There's supposed to be a curly hairdresser in Glasgow - I nearly went when I was there on a conference as I was so keen to see a curly hairdresser I live 100s of miles away

Notevilstepmother · 31/12/2017 23:09

Regular trims, wash every other day usually, I use child’s farm shampoo and John Frieda frizz ease conditioner. Only ever brush or de tangle with conditioner on. Wrap in towel, don’t rub, Use frizz ease serum when it’s still fairly wet, and leave it alone to dry naturally. Next morning if not washing gently and carefully run wet fingers through it to separate the curls, a teeny bit more serum and otherwise leave it alone. Too much touching will make it frizzy.

mathanxiety · 01/01/2018 02:37

Trooperslane2 buy some biotin (aka vitamin B7). It will really help. I take 2500 mg daily.

When I was pg and breastfeeding my hair did some really weird things - straightened out considerably, changed to a duller colour, fell out, etc.

I've been taking the biotin for abut 6 months now and it has had a tremendous effect on my hair and nails.

I use the CG method, wet it every day but do a proper conditioner wash about every three days. I leave some conditioner in the ends on the days I just wet it. I use a tresemme conditioner for coloured hair, and a gel marketed for Hispanic consumers (am in the US). I dilute the gel to about half strength.

I never brush or comb it and try to keep my hands out of it.

blackdoggotmytongue · 01/01/2018 02:59

I use Moroccan oil curl creme (about a centimetre) and a singe drop of Aveda dry remedy. Mix on hands and massage through to ends. Light enough not to look greasy and oily and weigh everything down, nourishing enough to promote curl, and not crispy at all. Hate hate hate crispy hair. No thank you 1980s mousse and diffuser fans. I look at my pics from the 80s and my hair LOOKS great - but it felt bloody awful, and frankly i’d Rather not be weirded out by crispy hair at my age...

gillybeanz · 01/01/2018 15:38

I didn't get on with the girly curl theory.
Have just found a specialist in Manchester though, so going to make appointment for a good cut asap.
You need a hairdresser who cuts it dry and then have wash and blow after.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 02/01/2018 19:02

It's interesting how different things suit different people! I guess that's the trick, you have to experiment and see what works for you.
My hair is thick, 3B curls, about jaw length. I can never, ever get 2nd day hair! Once I have slept on it it goes terribly frizzy and out of shape and has to be washed again.
I like to use different conditioners to co-wash and then condition. I am currently using a Boots basic tea tree and mint conditioner to co-wash and then the Tresemme coconut conditioner. I use a sulfate free shampoo about twice a week when my hair feels like it needs a proper wash. Then Boots pink curl creme and gel. The best gel I have found is the Tresemme spray one for curls, but it's getting trickier to get hold of. So most days I used the Tesco Basics blue one which is stupidly cheap (currently about 50p!)

My personal rules are no brushing or combing ever (except when being cut), no silicones and don't arse about with it too much - too much touching will cause frizz.
