Managing curly hair

Does anyone have any tips on managing curly hair?
Mine is very fine but lots of it. I’ve been using Tresemme bontaniques shampoo and conditioner for about 6 months and it’s noticeably more curly now but still prone to frizz and I can’t get a second day out of my curls without starting again after I’ve slept on it.
I’ve looked at curly girl methods and cannot for the life of me understand how people have time for all of that and I couldn’t live without shampooing my hair.
What do other people do?

What is co - wash, I saw it in the advert for the new hairdresser I'm going to try.
Do people think that £50 is too much to pay? I'm sure it's ok for a one off, but I can't afford this very often.

The best thing I've found for my frizz is not touching it while it naturally air drys. And after I'm done washing it I put a small amount of conditioner in my hair and not rinse it out.

Bluebell66 · 03/01/2018 12:02

Have you tried Philip Kingsley's Elasticizer OP? It's not cheap but a little goes a long way and it's very effective.

Twofishfingers · 03/01/2018 12:12

If you dont' mind looking silly at bedtime, you could buy a silk sleeping cap. The silk will preserve the curls for day 2 and make your hair less frizzy. Otherwise, you could cover your pillowcase with a silk scarf, or buy a nice new silk pillowcase. It really does help.

Like other posters above, I use sulfate free shampoo, lots of conditioner, and Curls Rock by Tigi (or the pink curling cream from Boots if I am on a budget!). I only use comb in the shower with conditioner. I use a microfiber towel (just a camping quick drying microfiber, not the expensive type). And apply product when hair is still soaking wet.

I use curly girl-friendly ingredients, but not really the routine.

Which is really to say, I conditioner wash only, avoid silicones and air dry or diffuse dry depending on time/weather.

I cba with all that plopping stuff.

raisinsraisins · 04/01/2018 13:07

Twofishfingers - Is Curls Rock by Tigi curly girl friendly, and where do you buy it from?

Bellamuerte · 04/01/2018 17:40

I use any random shampoo (don't scrub and rinse off quickly) followed by Aussie 3 Minute Miracle conditioner, then a blob of serum (Frizz Ease or similar) on damp hair. Day 2 I brush it through and dampen it slightly to revive the curl. To style dry hair I backcomb the roots a little to give volume, followed by a blast of hairspray.

My best tip is to get is a steel comb because it detangles much more smoothly than any other kind. My comb is actually one of those double sided steel dog grooming combs but it works better than any comb I've ever had that was meant for humans!

I use vo5 shampoo and conditioner. I wash every 2-3 days then wrap in a towel for 5 mins, brush through with a tangle teezer brush then us boots own brand curly hair mousse (2 for £1.50). If I sleep with my hair down the next day I can just use a spritz of water to wake it up. If I've put it up or its a real mess I will drench it in the shower but not rewash it. And repeat with mousse.
I generally get my hair cut once a year and get complimented on it all the time.

Lots of you are mentioning the cheap pink curl creme from Boots...my local store has stopped stocking it, so I emailed boots head office and they said they are discontinuing it ShockShockShock

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 04/01/2018 19:02

To be honest, the Boots curl cream has always been a gloopy for me (I used to love their peach/apricot cheap conditioner though).

Avocado oil is the best thing I've ever used - I haven't bought a styling product since discovering it.

Arronsmissus · 04/01/2018 19:46

Tigi curls rock can be bought at b&M (well my local one) plus the honey and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner.

PinPon · 04/01/2018 20:16

Silk pillowcase makes a big difference in allowing curls to last between washes without becoming too frizzy.

Twofishfingers · 04/01/2018 20:18

Bettedavis - Avocado oil sounds great - is there a specific brand? Where do you buy it?

Twofishfingers · 04/01/2018 20:20

I got Tigi Curls Rock from amazon.

That is bad news!!! My local Boots in the town centre had plenty in yesterday when I was shopping with my daughter.
I remember a few years on some of the hair and beauty forums there was talk of it being discontinued. It's a best seller, I think people overseas order it online.

My son and daughter both rely on it Sad

CoteDAzur · 04/01/2018 20:31

I have some of that pink Boots curl cream. It makes my curls rock hard. Am I missing something?

Twofishfingers · 04/01/2018 20:36

You only need to put in a little bit, when the hair is soaking wet. Leave it to dry and then scrunch hair gently to get rid of the 'crunchiness'.

CisCucumber · 04/01/2018 20:43

How do you know what category of curls you have?

Can l ask about curly Dd 11?

I can’t not let her wash her hair, it stinks after about 6 days. If l don’t comb it or brush it, it knots into huge lugs and snarls. Her hair is heavy, thick and curly, and not much seems to work on it.

I have to brush it in layers to get all the knots out, and the only thing that goes near it is a Tangle Attack brush. That seems to calm it more than frizz it. No curl cream seems to work eithet😟

Megabeth · 04/01/2018 22:05

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

If you use a conditioner with lots of 'slip' you can detangle after shampooing. Child's farm is great, also Yes to Carrots conditioner. This is the brush I use to detangle
m.lookfantastic.com/denman-d90l-tangle-tamer-brush-ultra-pink/11121721.html?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&thg_ppc_campaign=71700000026979853&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgeKD7Ke_2AIVZrvtCh3KAwOXEAQYAyABEgIcQvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CJ2dl-6nv9gCFYqeGwodKs4GWg

Do you use a detangling leave in product on her hair? The one I buy is made by Cantu, it's Creamy Conditioning hair lotion. My children have differing hair types, I dilute it with warm water (1:7) and use in a spray bottle and spritz it through before detangling. My eldest daughter has 3c hair and she uses it neat on hers. On my youngest using it neat makes her hair look greasy.
I found this on the high street for £6.69, if you live in a town or city with a black hairand beauty Shop they should stock this. Boots have some of their range

CoteDAzur · 04/01/2018 22:11

I don't use a brush or comb on my hair at any time. I finger-comb with conditioner, then leave my hair alone until the next wash. If it looks a bit frizzy, I just wet it a little and let it curl again.

My hair is very long, thick, and forms long locks.

LRL2017 · 04/01/2018 22:16

I use frizz ease smooth start shampoo and conditioner and 3 day straight is brilliant in controlling the frizz.

Ollivander84 · 04/01/2018 22:24

If you are full curly girl method, the boots pink cream isn't safe any more, it has a drying alcohol in it

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 05/01/2018 09:55

I panicked that they were discontinuing the pink curl crème a few months ago and stocked up! But I might need to replenish if they really are getting rid of it Sad
I find it works best if you put a bit on your hand, then rub between your palms until it goes white and then apply. It spreads more evenly and is less gloopy.
