Your sartorial goals for 2018

Do you have any?

Mine is to make my summer wardrobe interesting by actually buying some pieces and not telling myself there's no point as we get three hot days. I spent this year in one pair of loose printed trousers with a variety of plain t-shirts!

I also want to return things I like but don't love rather than keeping them and forcing myself to make them work.

Anyone else?

Look good for me, not good for a 12 year old model this is a good one. I'm very guilty of seeing something on someone else and assuming it will look the same on me. I give you exhibit A my new new stupid short fringe.

Also like the idea of writing purchases down.

quirkychick · 24/12/2017 16:07

Freshprincess I note mistakes too, in order to try not to repeat them. It's a bargain, but in the wrong size anyone?

TillyVonMilly · 24/12/2017 16:26

Find a decent hairdresser, quite why I struggle I don’t know, I think it’s partly because my hair is quite wavy, but find one I must.
Lose some weight, sigh 😔
Stop living in jeans

Freshprincess · 24/12/2017 17:06

Quirky chick - and also 'it's only a tenner, it will do for work'

Thickasmince · 24/12/2017 17:49

To be more adventurous and grown up with my clothes, and get a whole new work wardrobe.

I’m also going to get my nails done professionally, often. I feel a bit naked without my nails painted, but my efforts are minimal.

Also going to buy myself some nice jewellery. I wear the same necklace and plain ring every day.

BumWad · 24/12/2017 17:57

To start Retinol

AnnabelleLecter · 24/12/2017 18:10

To stick with the hairdresser I have now even though it's quite expensive, she does my hair exactly how I want it.
To buy as much cruelty free cosmetics and toiletries as possible.
Clothes wise to carry on buying a few amazing pieces rather than loads of mediocre.
Also to continue to keep track of what I spend and how many items I purchased.
I know exactly what I spent for the last three years and also how many mistake buys I made which are no longer with me.

AquaAddict · 24/12/2017 18:59

To give more of a shit, take some time for me and stop looking like I've been dragged through a variety of hedges and several woodlands backwards. I want to

  1. Sorry my hair out and find a decent hairdresser
  2. Get my nails done regularly but need to find somewhere that won't wreck them
  3. Stop wearing jeans and hoodies all the time. I have some nice stuff and I need to wear it
  4. Sort my make up and jewelry out
  5. Take better care of my skin

I am so sick of being a scruffy disorganised mess!

GottadoitGottadoit · 25/12/2017 01:05

Yep, for me the big difference would be to finall6 loose that half stone!

AppleHEAD · 25/12/2017 07:52

Lose 3 stone and wear the gorgeous clothes which haven't fitted for ages.

lasttimeround · 25/12/2017 08:07

To keep at my fitness routine regardless of weight. It's for my health and healthy looks good at any size.
I'm doing well understanding what I like and what suits me. So spend a little more on day to day items and accessories. I've noticed a really good scarf or jewellery gives me great pleasure and really lifts my quite plain outfits. I like that much more than a patterned top for instance.
Buy good shoes. And more styles. Use cobbler more.
Do nails more regularly. It's just clear polish and a tidy but it does look better.
Upgrade make up now esp with those items I find I really like on me. I've an orange primark lipstick I think looks ace. Now I want to find similar but from a brand with better wear.
Start notebook again to keep at this, or start taking outfit photos again.

thedevilinablackdress · 25/12/2017 08:09

Stop buying fantasy-life clothes in eBay for someone who goes to a lot more --any cool parties and gallery openings. Or just wear the damn things anyway and embrace eccentricity

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 25/12/2017 08:51

Give up moaning that I no longer have the body I had 20 years ago and dress the one I’ve got.

Concentrate more on eating healthily

Start yoga

Find a dance class

Buy only what I love.

Floisme · 25/12/2017 11:13

One more: This is an aim not a resolution but I want to buy as little new stuff as I can from the high street chains. I just don't like the way they operate; their clothes - with the odd honourable exception - are in ant case crap and, in 2018, I'd like them to see as little of my money as possible. But I promise not to be a zealot about it and I've already given myself a dispensation for the Lemaire-Uniqlo ranges. Xmas Wink Merry Christmas one and all!

RhiannonOHara · 25/12/2017 14:24

It’s not exactly sartorial but I’m finally going to make myself chuck out all the clothes I just don't wear but keep ‘because I’ll feel like wearing it one day.’

Actually sartorially, I want to find a style of trousers I like that are not skinny jeans or harems. I love both of these but need a third way! (any tips gratefully received)...

rightknockered · 25/12/2017 15:54

Stop wearing shoes that are half a size too big for me, bought some that actually fit properly this year, and the comfort difference is palpable. Likewise stop buying jeans that are too big around the waist, or too tight on my legs.
Get more stuff tailored, and throw out underpants that cause VPL

BrownLiverSpot · 25/12/2017 17:54

I'm going to invest in good quality classic style clothing and throw out stuff that's broken beyond salvaging and give away anything that I haven't fitted in in the past 5 years.

Update my wardrobe, take more risks.

Look less frumpy.

UsernameInvalid66 · 25/12/2017 19:59

To buy nothing new (charity shops are allowed!) all year except underwear if I really need it and one pair of FitFlop sandals in the spring. I'm going to attempt to blog about it, although the last time I kept a blog I hardly ever remembered to update it.

Hadenoughtoday01 · 25/12/2017 21:32
  1. Do more yoga and Pilates; keep up the good work with the rest of my exercise regime.
  2. Leave my hair alone - try and grow out my bleached ends, grow it longer and then have subtle highlights or balayage.
  3. I may have to do a detox thingy to sort out the eczema on my hands, I don’t need to lose weight but I need to find out what’s aggravating it.
  4. stick to only buying decent quality clothing that I will wear and wear. I had to cut back on clothing spend at the end of 2016 and I’ve appreciated the quality of the items I can wear again.
  5. Drink more water - always.
Kuriusoranj · 26/12/2017 02:31

At the risk of sounding a bit ludicrous, I want to be worthy of the bag I just got for Christmas :). My wonderful husband bought me a Chanel classic handbag. I don't want to leave it mouldering in its box - I want to use it every day and treasure it. But I live in slouchy crappy shorts and vest tops and it's not really going to go. A combination of mild depression this year, with associated weight gain and just general feeling-old-and-knackered means that I have lost direction completely. I have some amazing jewelry and now this wonderful handbag and I want to not look like a slobbish invisible woman.

lasttimeround · 26/12/2017 08:40

Oh kuriousoranj what a lovely gift. If it's hard to work our how to style up to your bag you could go for a pair of good jeans. A white shirt and decent shoes. Classic but just easy to do until you figure out your style.

ChristmasChocandChampagne · 26/12/2017 08:54

Learn more nice updos
Wear more stylish grownup clothing (the jeans and top combo is my standard usually)
Shop tactically, only from a list

Niminy · 26/12/2017 09:38

I spent yesterday afternoon padding out my new dressmaker's dummy to my exact shape and measurements. Which was quite an odd experience, as you have to be absolutely objective about your body and pin layers of padding on where you need it (in my case round hips and prominent belly).

My sartorial resolution is to make clothes that actually fit my body as it is, and so be flattering to the shape that I am.

MinSpies · 26/12/2017 10:10

Echoing pps I need to lose that stone by exercising rather than diet.

Wear the clothes I have and stop buying more clothes, particularly work clothes and summer clothes as I have plenty of both.

I'm going to save for Botox again and possibly some fillers too this time.

Really I need to find a style of my own.
I'm middle aged now and I need to look at what I've got and how I want to look.
I've properly lost my way style-wise.

robotsmania · 26/12/2017 10:58

This is a great thread- and reading it has made me think, and get myself in order before the new year starts.

I've had a couple of overhauls over the last few years. I moved from grotty part of London to the 'home counties' and slowly realised after a year that my wardrobe from primark, Tesco and M&S on a very good day was not the in style round here! (Plus I went from size 10 to 14-16 and none of my horrible clothes fitted anyway)
So I spent 2016 with the aim of looking socially acceptable. I just wanted normal clothes that fitted including shoes and coat.
So I basically got a couple of pairs of jeans a coat and a few tops from Boden and Hush (thank you MN) plus two pairs of boots and a daywear dress.
Now in 2017 I've been improving my summer wardrobe, trying to tell myself it's ok to have more than one coat or pair of shoes! I feel I've got a good, well-fitting wardrobe and shoes for work and school run, trips to the park etc. A big breakthrough last month was buying another pair of ankle boots when I already had some- even though they were completely different styles.

Thinking about goals for 2018 it would be:

  • update underwear with great basics and some special pieces (incl bra fitting)
  • regular yoga and Pilates to improve posture (do it at home if I can't get to a class)
  • New off-duty coat for summer and winter
  • continue to prioritise myself in order to look great every day!
