I deliberated too long - while I was nosying around NAP I came back and the boots in my basket had sold out. Oh well, clearly wasn't meant to be!! They're probably a bit too close in style to the plain ones I already have - and the universe seems to think I need to get out of my rut and be slightly less predictable!!

Please do report back - with pictures!!

botemp · 26/12/2017 21:38

Typed out a whole post and lost it. In short, I'd looked at those boots too but I somehow only like them from above but find them to busy from the side somehow.

For an addition to your wardrobe, how about plaid/tartan/check. This IM shirt was just added to the sale. Could be a good winter counterpart to a Breton stripe whilst bringing in a bit of colour, should go with a leather mini, the leggings, skinnies, under a black slouchy jumper Xmas Wink, I bet you even have shoes like those.

I was also much tempted today to get this t-shirt as a memento of this thread (pic 2). I'm not really that yellow, my phone just likes to add a jaundice filter on everything Xmas Confused. Not really one for slogan/fun text tees though. Also found a backup grey sweatshirt at Maison Kitsune but it's twice the price of the Other Stories jumper so will see how that is first.

zippyswife · 26/12/2017 21:52

Oh bo I love that t-shirt on you. Where is it from?

botemp · 26/12/2017 21:58

Maison Kitsune as well, it was 30 euros marked down from 60. I may just have another look tomorrow when I go pick up my sales order which is arriving much sooner then expected.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 26/12/2017 22:01

I have some boots rather like them already, but mine are really tatty now - but the buckles/studs on mine are great with jeans/jersey to make anything look a bit grittier. They don't work with patterned stuff or anything too fussy. I am hoping these will replace those beloved ones!

I would quite like a tartan shirt but I have so much trouble getting shirts to fit - they always gape at the boobs or are utterly massive all over. I'm short but I have broad shoulders and petite sizing is always designed for narrow shoulders. I'd also like a leather skirt, do you think it would be too much for work?

zippyswife · 26/12/2017 22:02

I love it. You’ve got to get it!

botemp · 26/12/2017 22:06

Sure, spend all my money, why don't you Xmas Hmm Xmas Wink

Depends on your work but as long as you don't go bare legged and aren't showing your pants when bending over you'd probably be fine in most workplaces. Petite is more difficult though, I'm borderline but find the fits awful but a leather mini is not an easy one to shorten.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 26/12/2017 22:42

Got some wide leg high waisted wool trousers in the NAP sale, plus an APC wool jumper and the proenza schoeuler Jacket I've been obsessing over 👍🏼

Methenyouplus4 · 27/12/2017 08:38

Banana- I seem to remember you have a similar build to me. I know you said you normally go for plain (as do I), but I recently bought a silk tea dress and have got loads or wear from it. The print is very small and quite graphic so not too twee.

I have been wearing it:

  1. with ankle boots, slouchy cardi/jumper and thixk wooly tight for casual.
  2. With loafers/brogues, tights with a slight sheen and a cashmere cardigan over the top with a thin leather belt over the cardi to nip in the waist (for work).

In summer I can imagine wearing it with bare legs and nude heels for meals out etc in summer, with tan leather flats for casual or with bare legs, suede ankle boots and suede/leather jacket for casual.

I have included a few images for ideas , i'm sure there are colours /lengths etc out there to suit most shapes.

Forgot to add you can wear it with trainers too for casual (I don't own Stan Smiths but imagine they would work).

The last image on the right is the one I bought from ebay for £4! As I said, I don't usually wear prints si I bought one that was really cheap before I decided if I would get much wear out of it. Now I know I will, i'm going to keep my eyes out for a silk version.

Oh, I like the idea of a leather or faux leather skirt banana and the photo of the big, black jumper!

I wore my Allsaints faux leather leggings yesterday with a charcoal jumper dress. Lovely material and super comfortable, I sized up and was wondering if I sized should have sized down, but I have long legs and wanted enough fabric iyswim. Looking at that photo, I think it's ok for them not to look sprayed on. It's made me realise I could do with some more long jumpers/jumper dresses too. I threw out some last year as 2 were tatty (not great quality to start with) and my favourite burgundy merino toast one was ravaged by moths Sad.

prettybird · 27/12/2017 10:28

Looks like I'm going to have to take back the lovely green Timberland desert boots Xmas Sad

I got them on eventually (having taken out all the laces and using a heel slide to ease my foot in). Re-laced them (not enough ribbon to go into the last set of eyes - but noticed in the box that there are "ordinary" laces I could use) and sat for an hour or so in them. They're long enough, but they're not wide enough so the front of my foot felt like it was in a vice Xmas Sad - despite only having then socks on Xmas Confused

By the time I took them off, my feet had gone numb Xmas Shock

Dh is threatening never to buy me footwear again after we had to take the gorgeous Massimo Duti boots back last year (didn't fit my chunky calves) as well. I'm trying to explain that there is a difference between boots and shoes - especially if he goes for a brand that I've had before. Brogues, which had also been on my Christmas List, would have been fine.

botemp · 27/12/2017 11:00

Oh, I thought you'd asked for those specific boots, pretty. Kudos to your DH for going out and picking something out with you in mind. Tell him he should feel very special with his 'bo approval' status and not waiver next year Xmas Wink. I think anyone attempting that for me would succumb to the stress of getting that right.

It's getting terribly cold again, I think I could use some flannel pjs but they all seem to be made out of synthetics. I'm not making it up, am I, that they used to be natural fibres?

prettybird · 27/12/2017 11:08

No - I'd just asked for "desert boots" - and had even specified a cheap (black, furry lined) pair I'd seen in Deichmann as I really only wanted them for rugby supporting duties.

However, this pair were beautiful and would really have upped my "casual" dress style game Xmas GrinXmas Sad

BWatchWatcher · 27/12/2017 12:11

I have just bought a teal silk tea dress from ebay. I have brogues and a grey cardigan. Not so sure about the leather belt. I'm quite long bodied?

TobikkoRoll · 27/12/2017 15:01

I've followed these threads from the start and as we're nearing the end of part deux I wanted to say a huge thank you to @botemp for all her supportive and interesting advice, and of course to @TossDaily for starting the whole thing off.

Hope everyone is having a good Christmas break and it sounds as though some of you are already enjoying the sales Grin

I've browsed all the sale websites I can afford (strictly high street) and have only ordered the most impractical silver sandals imaginable. But buying from Cos and &Other Stories will definitely have to be done in person, I find their sizing baffling.

I've absolutely loved this thread, I love so much of the aesthetics that have been described, even though I cannot wear some of it (wrong body shape for masculine lines; lack of confidence and height for long socks / OTK boots). But it's been a joy to read about clothes, women and style discussed in such a helpful way. Thanks everyone Flowers

I think these threads need to be continued...

zippyswife · 27/12/2017 15:10

I agree Tobi. I can’t contribute myself as I really have nothing useful to add but I’ve loved reading it and have taken massively from it.

So a massive thanks from me too!!

bananafish81 · 27/12/2017 16:07

Totally agree tobi - an absolute joy, and such heartfelt thanks to toss for starting, bo for sharing her bottomless style advice, and everyone else for their wonderful contributions. Agree 100% it's been a highlight for the very best of MN in 2017

Quirky I love the sound of your LL and jumper dress - the fit sounds great. Agree 100% to not looking sprayed on. I can only sympathise WRT to bastard moths. Have lived in two places with immersion tanks in the bedroom meaning they get unreasonably warm, ie moth disco palace. I've gone full on chemical warfare with hanging things, stick on pheromone traps, freezing woollens and hoovering out the cupboard, but I never quite managed to win the war. Before moving into our current rental place I froze every single jumper and kept them in their own freezer bags and out of the cupboard where I've seen the moths stuck to the sticky pheromone pads and yet somehow impervious to the nuclear holocaust as I saw the twats flying out as well, sprayed the hell out of the cupboards at the new place, hung up the anti moth hangar things on the rails, and now just have to hope none have come with. Having lost good quality woollens to two different homes, I'm just not willing to invest in fabulous knitwear, unless I can live in some kind of Mariah Carey on MTV Cribs-esque place with my own dressing room. Frankly I also need stuff that isn't too high maintenance when it comes to washing

On which note, sorry to lower the tone, what's the general consensus about washing? I know MN seems to think if you don't wash towels after every use you are a slattern etc, but what do we think about knitwear (assuming it's worn with a base layer)? Am I utterly disgusting for giving cashmere a good few wears between washes? I was under the impression that premium denim benefitted from being washed as little as possible - I'm not putting them in the freezer, but equally I don't wash my J Brands after every single wear. As for the leather leggings, would very much welcome your expert advice bo

Mary depends on your workplace, but I wear my leather skirt to work all the time. Half the women in my office wear one on any given day! It might look a bit 'me too', but tbh I love mine, and it goes with pretty much everything, so I refuse to not wear it on account of others also wearing one! I wear mine with more feminine ankle boots, tougher looking biker boots, and now I have the permission from the Parisiennes de MN, my otk boots as well

LOVE the suggestion of a plaid shirt bo - funnily enough I was actually gawping at the massive display of plaid flannel shirts last time in uniqlo wondering if I could get away with one without looking like too much of a throwback to my teenage grunge days. 13 yo me definitely would never have worn IM, I absolutely adore it - would indeed be a terrific counterpart to everything you mention. And love the styling too. You are indeed correct that I have trainers like that too! (Although Stan Smiths rather than IM). I always think the leather skirt + bare legs so beloved of stylists and fashion bloggers looks amazing, but there's such a small window whereby bare legs are actually bearable, I wonder who actually wears them like that IRL?! Actually, where do we stand on black opaques with white trainers? I've worn my leather skirt with black tights and my Stan Smiths on occasion, but never quite sure if it looks ridiculous or not...

Ooh methen LOVE the look of these tea dresses, they're gorgeous. So pretty! I had a quick look at my Stylebook app - reminding myself that I do actually have a couple of dresses with prints. The maroo leopard print one's from Hush (Yes, I know, I know. But I had some vouchers...), the black floral shirt dress is from &otherstories, and the floral print swing dress is from (of all places) M&S: none of which get nearly enough wear (although I stupidly bought the Hush dress without noticing it was 3/4 sleeves, so can't wear my usual base layers underneath)

LOVE the idea of a silk dress, especially if I could have the courage to wear something midi like the beautiful examples you've shown there. I got a lovely pleated midi summer skirt which got me over my initial fear, so I don't really have any excuse not to give one a whirl!

bananafish81 · 27/12/2017 16:11

Hmm, bloody app - let's try again with attachment this time

Les Parisiennes de Mamansnet - Thread part deux
LazyDailyMailJournos · 27/12/2017 16:16

Banana not unreasonable at all. I always try and wear a base layer with knitwear so that I don't have to keep washing it, as it's not great for the fabric.

TobikkoRoll · 27/12/2017 17:02

I will happily wear knitwear many many many times before it gets a wash because I also wear a base layer underneath - for warmth and also some of the textures are just too scratchy / makes me itchy. I'll admit to being a slattern in this regard.

Your moth problem sounds awful @bananafish81, much sympathy.

In the SE where I live, it's fairly easy to go bare legged until quite late in the autumn and I've attempted the bare legs + leather skirt look this year. With trainers and probably with ankle boots too.

I also love the idea of florals and tea dresses, but have never found a proper tea dress for my proportions. I do have a few Whistles knee length silk floral dresses that I love, which I'll wear with all sorts of footwear depending on the season. But they're a bodycon style (several years old) and I have to feel thin and shapely to put them on. As opposed to currently post-Christmas fat and shapely Grin

This thread had spurred me on to think more about what I already own and how I actually like a lot of my wardrobe, but don't wear much apart from a small selection (so boring). I also feel like I'm reaching the age where I just don't need another black dress / grey jumper / pair of silver shoes etc.

Either I'm due for a massive clear out (very unlike me, I'm a natural hoarder but the wardrobes are bursting) or I should address what I already own and get more wear out of that Hmm

botemp · 27/12/2017 20:20

BWatch, I'm no expert on tea dresses or cardigans or brogues as I tend to avoid them all for myself, but I think you can try the belt a bit higher than your natural waist if you're long bodied. Funnily enough that tea dress, brogue, cardi combo is, to my eyes, a very British look.

I do wish people would stop thinking they have nothing to contribute, questions and queries is what keeps the conversation alive on here and probably the only thing that stops this becoming my random musings and risk it becoming a bit me-me-me (as in me, bo, don't let a question that only seems applicable to you only deter you, most likely it will be of help to someone in a similar situation). The way you all go on about best of MN 2017, thread of the year, etc. as if it's a thing amuses me though, or have I missed something, is there some MN thread of the year contest somewhere?

Speaking of Cos &Other Stories, H&M announced today they will be launching a new brand, Nyden (Swedish combo of the words 'New' and 'It') affordable luxury for millennials, it'll be a bit more future-focused whilst ignoring trends. Limited numbers and it'll only be available online and in pop-up events. It's all sounding a bit arty but at the same time, it sounds like a grown-up version of &Other Stories of special high-quality pieces at democratic prices, set to launch early 2018. 50p that the website will be even more bonkers than COS though Xmas Grin

Ok, germaphobes look away now.

I say, embrace your inner filthy animal. You know that slightly funky smell old money usually has, embrace that because they know how to make a cashmere or virgin wool jumper pass through several generations by pretty much not washing it. If knitwear is all natural fibre or mostly, simply hang up after wearing and either let it steam a bit whilst you're in the shower (provided you don't have the most efficient fan ever in your bathroom) or hang it in an open window/garden/balcony for 30 mins or so and it'll be fine. I usually wash my knitwear before storing and usually around sometime this year because I have the time for it (with the careful handwash or nets in the machine, low spin cycle, mild detergent, never use fabric softener, rolling up in a towel to take out excess water, then drying flat), I don't own a ton of knits, and I wear them loads.

Jeans- wash them when they actually smell, never put them in the dryer you'll shorten the life of the elastic. Leather Leggings, stick them in the freezer, kills any germs and helps retain their shape. A suede one is worth sending to the cleaners as it perks up quite a bit. These are all materials that can hold onto smell but don't actually absorb it so an airing usually sorts it out, nor are they sending you into sweat overdrive like synthetics would. Especially if you wear something underneath, provided it's not in direct contact with our more pungent parts there really isn't the need to compromise fabric integrity, the less you wash it, the longer it lasts.

banana wrt opaques, I think it often depends on the quality of the opaques (some can be so dull) and a bit of ankle definition comes into it too, I think this is one of those things that cankles actually carry off better with trainers as the definition contrast doesn't detract as much where an opaque enhances the silhouette otherwise.

General nylon tip, dry them in the freezer, just stick them in a ziploc and stick in the freezer. Weird I know, stops them running, or attracting lint. Always do the freeze before wearing them for the first time, simply run under the tap, squeeze out excess moisture, ziploc bag and freeze overnight, leave the next day to defrost.

LazyDailyMailJournos · 27/12/2017 20:25

I must admit one of the main reasons I don't wash my woollens very often, is because it's such a ball-ache Grin All the palaver of hand-washing with Woolite, wringing out in a towel without stretching, reshaping and having to drag out the flat net dryer. Far easier just to keep wearing a base layer, give it a good airing and sponge off any marks...

I'm intrigued by Nyden and will be very interested to see what that looks like when it launches.

botemp · 27/12/2017 20:34

Yes, Lazy Grin, laziness definitely comes into it. Some years (usually before storage) I just can't be arsed and send it all to the dry cleaner Blush

bananafish81 · 27/12/2017 21:27

I feel so much less of a slattern! My everyday Merino wool gets bunged in the machine as that washes really well (in nets on a cold cycle), but all the proper woollens....er, not so much. Unless they start getting whiffy, they get hung up to air and then back in the cupboard

I really cannot be shagged with all the hand washing and lying flat and all that palaver - it all gets worn with a base layer which is what goes into the wash every wear

Having discovered the joys of Laundrapp, I have to confess that I sent my first cashmere jumper off for dry cleaning with a load of wash+iron (the aforementioned shirts and bedding), came back so well that I think all my cashmere will get sent off as I daren't admit how long it's been since any of it was washed

Denim wise I now feel vindicated, as I wash when it gets whiffy visibly dirty- on a cold wash and hung to dry, but ideally as infrequently as possible. Haven't touched the LL yet, so freezer it is! The MN clean freaks would I'm sure have a field day, as I've seen AIBU threads expressing utter horror that someone might wear a pair of trousers more than once.

Tobi you must be made of much hardier stuff, as I'm also in the SE (London) and I can't tolerate bare legs except in the height of summer! I've clearly lost my hardier northern roots, when I'd go out without a coat as a teenager in the midst of winter....

My intolerance to the cold is a bit of a stumbling block to styling a few garments to look more chic. Emanuelle Alt always makes her shirts look sexy AF by wearing the sleeves artfully rolled up, see also sweaters with shirts underneath to avoid looking like you're wearing school uniform

I'm always bloody cold, so I always wear a base layer under my shirts - except when it's properly spring or very early autumn. I'll try a heat tech t shirt rather than long sleeved top - but even then, my lower arms just get too chilly if they're bare. If it's coat and scarf weather outside, it's not bare arm weather inside. Oh the trials and tribulations!! Grin

And don't even get me started on wrapping up warm with layers and warm coats and scarves for outside and then getting on the tube to go to work or going in and out of shops at the weekend where the heating is on full blast and turning into a not so chic sweaty mess
