*bo8 i wanted to say a HUGE thank you for the time and effort you put into your post about how you buy and avoiding cheap impulse buys. It really is appreciated and made me think-lots.
Because I haven't got much money I am guilty of waiting until the sales/ebay bargains and buying that way rather than saving and buying less often but something that will last. green leather jacket anyone?

Ines De La Fressenage talks about mixing cheap clothes with expensive pieces and that way your whole outfit is lifted to another level.
I love jackets, for me they always have that effect.

I love the idea of a french chic advent calendar!

I must say I am disappointed with Justine's clothes on her website; they are very bland.
Although I haven't yet had my colours done I am pretty sure that I don't suit beige, so a biscuit/cream coloured trench for example would make me look ill.

ProperLavs · 03/12/2017 10:40

I also need to work on my nails. They are ragged and chewed, as are the cuticles.
I also need to learn how to wear shoes. It sounds silly but I don't know how. I can do boots and sandals. I don't wear dresses or skirts, so no tights and with the current 7/8 length trousers how do you wear shoes?
I feel a little bit of a heel would lift any trousers I wear, but you can't wear socks so how do you keep your feet warm? Or maybe you are supposed to freeze?

SplatPancake · 03/12/2017 10:56

Yes please to a Botemp-curated Advent Calendar!!

prettybird · 03/12/2017 11:07

Love the concept of a re-vamp/re-use/re-style Advent calendar.

Inspired by this thread, I have already started to wear some of my selection of pashminas (which are usually just draped on the sofa or just taken with me on holiday as dual purpose travelling blankets and evening stoles) as scarfs. Nice and warm for Scottish winter too! Smile

botemp · 03/12/2017 11:09

Ankle boots? As in the ones that come up, not the ones that cut off on the ankle.

I stop wearing any trousers that would require bare ankles as soon as the temperatures hit single digits. I have a seasonal approach to my wardrobe, I would say the French are similar where I think many will mainly have a summer/winter division. A lot of it crosses over seasonally but being uncomfortable is just non negotiable for me.

bananafish81 · 03/12/2017 11:19

I wear tall ankle boots with my trousers. I wear my jeans and skinnies rolled up to 7/8 and my ankle boots with them.

These are this year's pair - nice and tall and really really comfy

ProperLavs · 03/12/2017 11:24

Thanks
I have ankle boots ( lots Blush). I have a couple of pairs of brogue lace up boots from office. i adore them and can only get them second hand from eBay as they are no longer made. The heel is quite high for me, but the are so comfortable and always garner compliments.
I must make sure that my footwear is looked after though. i read somewhere that Christian Dior said that most women don't look after their shoes and it can really pull an outfit down. ( makes note to take boots to cobblers)

botemp · 03/12/2017 11:24

As for trench coats, go with green! I had one very similar to attached but unfortunately a dry cleaner destroyed it. I'm still upset about it Sad

COS also currently have a trench in a darker beige that leans slightly into green IRL rather than being that draining beige so that may work too. I've tried it on, it's somewhat TTS which is rare at COS but big boobs and broad shoulders should probably size up.

Hooray, have found you all again! Just in the nick of time too - am in my v frumpy PJs and a motheaten cardigan. Not tres chic! @prettywhiteguitar could you please link to the Liberty advent calendar thread? I have treated myself this year and would love to hear what others think! Am v happy so far. Right, off to transform self into Parisienne femme fatale...

botemp · 03/12/2017 11:30

Banana, I have the original Acne Studios version of those, the Jensens. Wear them much the same way without getting frostbite, they're very versatile and a pointed toe does really do a lot of favours on a flatter shoe.

Generally caring for your wardrobe is a thing that shows care in your appearance, it doesn't mean everything need be brand new. I am making a special note to tackle fabric and shoe care on the advent calendar Wink

bananafish81 · 03/12/2017 11:38

The great thing about the &otherstories boots is just how tall they are - they extend 4cm above the ankle (according to the details), so they really do leave no gaps. Agree 100% on the pointy toe. I have some more rounded toe ankle boots that can look a bit like wellies in comparison. My Dune Chelsea boots are less rounded and have lasted well but too low in the ankle to wear with a proper 7/8 length.

I have to say that I hardly wear my Acne pistols because I just can't hack wearing any kind of heel any more - they get rolled out for special occasions, but not for daily use on the tube etc. These lovelies get worn almost daily, so I am of course knackering the hell out of them. Le sigh.

TossDaily · 03/12/2017 11:57

Bonjour all!

I'm massively failing at le chic lately. I wore my new mulberry-coloured shawl scarf yesterday to man the bookstall at a Christmas school fair - and ended up using it as a tablecloth as there wasn't one provided Hmm

My nails haven't been painted for a week, and I'm getting a bit voluptuous due to wanting to eat all the carbs thanks to the cold weather.

On the upside, my M&S advent calendar yielded some Nuxe shower oil this morning, which is a lovely French treat. Hopefully it will awaken my latent Parisienne!

I have weird feet, banana, Acne Pistols are my equivalent of slippers and very flat shoes with no heel are absolute torture devices. I can walk for hours on my Pistols but trainers will give me aches, contradictorily TKees leather flip flops are the comfiest thing ever despite being very, very, thin soled Confused

ProperLavs · 03/12/2017 12:12

Omg that coat! That green, what an amazing colour! I think I have a green thing going on.
I have some green pointy knee length boots that i found in a charity shop years ago. The are stunning. I must wear them. I worried that I might look like an elf thoughBlush

botemp · 03/12/2017 12:15

Unless the pointy toes have little bells on them I'm sure you're good to go Proper Grin

ProperLavs · 03/12/2017 12:17

What is it with that COS model? She looks spectacularly bored, she doesn't suit or fit the clothes she is modling and it makes them look really unattractive.
Is the green coat also a COS one bo?
I need a spring trench really.

ProperLavs · 03/12/2017 12:17

mustn't wear the green boots with any red though.

Auldspinster · 03/12/2017 12:21

This is the coat i've been wearing lately (although mine is years old) in a horrid maroon colour. It is so cosy and great in Edinburgh winters but has nil chic points. I got it for about £60 in the sale, about 10 years ago.

www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Insulated_Squall_Coat/pp/P_38310.html?cgid=11299

botemp · 03/12/2017 12:37

No the green coat is from Acne Studios, it's up there in price. I have to say trenches are not something I'd invest too heavily in because depending on the year they don't really see that much wear. I hardly wore mine this year (see attached, it's an H&M Trend line one, their pricier more fashion line, marked down from a 100 to 30 to 24 euros with a birthday coupon, it may still pop up again in the January sales) as the weather went very quickly from cooler to downright cold or was too wet for a trench to handle.

It has more use in spring but then you usually want a shorter one rather than the full length so the whole 'classic' you'll get loads of wear out of it spiel is somewhat flawed IMO. At least in the temperatures and lifestyle I'm dealing with. Sure it'll last forever as it hardly comes out all that much but it doesn't get the type of wear that a winter coat does. If you're not someone who wears one loads already then start cheaper and if you do find you do find you get loads of wear out of it then it makes sense to invest more heavily.

Comptoir have a dark olive one which has a good in-between length. It's in the last chance section once more so sizes are limited but comes at quite affordable at £75.00 and their trenches are very well made and cut.

Aulds I'm very impressed with your self trimmed fringe! Did you just go for it or watch some YT videos first?
I've had a fringe for years but the last hairdresser I went to messed my hair up and scared me off hair salons for months so the fringe is very grown out. I miss it.

bo I am shocked at you not removing your make up properly. ShockWink

I am interested to know what you all think about the brand Claudie Pierlot? I always take time to have a look at the concession when I am in the Galleries Lafayette (am in Berlin, so this is the closest I have to French shopping).

Auldspinster · 03/12/2017 13:13

You would be less impressed if you could see my fringe!

I've got a clamp that i put my fringe in then just run a beard trimmer without the guard along it . Zero skill involved.

Auldspinster · 03/12/2017 13:16

Here's the trimmer i use - i've seen it marketed as a pet hair trimmer; ladies intimate trimmer; a beard trimmer and now an afro trimmer in the amazon posting.

Handy for when i can't be arsed to give my legs or pits a proper shave but gets most use on the fringe.

quirkychick · 03/12/2017 13:17

Yy, to advent of French chic Smile.

That Comptoir trench is gorgeous, bo. I probably don't wear them anywhere near as much as I used to. I used to wear trenches a lot pre-children and working ft, in the rain with an umbrella, it suited city living and I wasn't ever out in a downpour for long, going between transport. I found doing the school run on foot meant investing in weatherproof coats, as my hands aren't free for an umbrella. So, I would still wear a trench if it was either not really raining much or I'm going somewhere sans enacts. I have 2 trench coats, one black, french, not sure of brand with matt silver hardware which is more wintry looking and another cornflower blue and definitely more spring/summer.

I also agree about the seasonal dressing. I'm currently getting out some of my deep winter clothes, lots of warm wool jumpers. I can't do the bare ankles in the cold either, I think it looks a bit silly in the very cold, too.
