Is there a way to make your hair thinner?

I see lots of products to thicken hair but I need the opposite. I have far too much hair and it just looks shit all the time because it's so thick.

Point cutting to get some of the weight taken out of it esp at the ends will help a lot. (Not the same as layering which just turns my hair into a frizzy mess).

A good hair cut. Honestly. I’ve been told “your hair is too thick to cut well” before but once I found a style and hairdresser that worked it’s made an enormous difference.

I use Redken Frizz Dismiss cream which is AMAZING. I don’t use anything else other than bog standard shampoo and conditioner.

I get my hair cut and thinned out every 7-8 weeks but it's immediately huge again.
The frizz cream sounds good. My hair is in good condition but is so frizzy, nothing seems to work.

do you straighten it? if you want it straight you could look at a brazilian keratin treatment.They smooth hair and so reduces the volume.

Can you do more often? I go every 5-6 weeks to get it thinned down, but it looks fine during time. Try changing hairdresser or style?

I don't think products are the answer. I agree with posters who say you need a good hairdresser - they''re not always easy to find but they're out there - who can give you a style/cut that will work with your hair rather than fighting it.

And then you just need to get older. Trust me, it does get thinner - and boy am I kicking myself for all those years I used to moan about it.

Get another hairdresser. A good one will be able to thin your hair, remove weight and style it into a flattering shape.

I know of an excellent one in the north, if you want me to tell you about him.

You absolutely cannot tell I've had one unless I wear my hair up. But it takes all the weight out from the underneath, leaving me with a normal amount of hair

Means I can have a blunt cut! And I wake up and it doesn't look like a hedge! And I don't have to straighten it! And it sits really nicely

Only thing that's made by hair properly thinner though my hairdresser says what's left would still be classed as moderately thick on someone else

Oh god me too, have finally found my people. No-one seems to understand what a pain it is to have stupidly thick hair. Every hairdresser I have ever had says how much everyone would love to have nice thick hair and it's better than having thin hair. I really don't agree, for one thing it's so expensive as you need to get it cut so often to keep it looking ok. I've spent so much money on my hair over the years! It's so hard to style it too. Does anyone have any tips on good styles for thick hair? When mine needs a cut again (which is quite often as I have no money at the moment) I just tend to wear it in a ponytail, but I'm so bored of that look.

Don't worry. The menopause will sort you out. Mine was ridiculously thick. Now I am endlessly buying stuff to make it look thicker.

Seconding the undercut and the brazilian keratin treatment. The first stops my pixie / bob looking like a mushroom after 10 days after a cut, the second is a game changer for making it quick and easy to style

You can have treatment to stop the frizz

It’s not cheap and you have to wash it with a special shampoo

I had the Brazilian thing and it was shit to be fair, really under whelming. The one thing that did work was chemical straightener.. excpt obviously hair went straw like shortly afterwards and I had to cut it all off! Might explore undercuts although I’m not sure how I could ever wear my hair up at work with one

TheGrumpySquirrel point cutting works in the same way as an undercut but not as drastic and you can wear your hair up still.

I've an undercut which sorts the back. Sides still need managing a bit. I've not had my hair cut for 7 weeks (unusual) and I look like crystal tips.

I had the Brazilian blow dry first time in 2011 in some dodgy salon in Hoxton. It was a miracle.

Had a few more for a few years and each time was more shit. I think health and safety made salons cut down the really dangerous chemicals so it just got pointless as it was the proper poison that made it work.

Oh I’m delighted to find other people who find thick hair a pain. I’m bad at hair, despite years of practice. I haven’t cut it in ages as every hairdresser I go to wants to either cut layers into it or “frame my face”. Both of which leave me completely unable to style it. So now it’s curtain shaped, very long and either straightened or tied back at all times.

Watching with interest. My hair seems to be getting thicker as I get older.

My hair has been tied back virtually all my life because straightening / blow drying takes so long, I’m a hot, sweaty heap by the time I’ve finished!

Tried so many products. Layers take out weight but seem to make it wider and wilder.

You want a panel hair cut.

Basically this is a layered hair cut where the top layer is long and interwoven between the top and the bottom layer are individual shorter/longer layers.

It's hard to describe but the effect of it is to take all the weight and thickness out of the hair. If you imagine a hundred strings all hung on a washing line side by side (representing your hair across your scalp) Strings 1 - 5 are left full length, strings 5 - 10 are cut to quarter length, strings 10 -15 are left full length, strings 15 - 20 are cut to half length, strings 20 - 25 are left full length.

I warn you though be careful what you wish for. I had thick hair and had my hair cut like this - it looked fantastic and it was an expensive hair cut (you need it done by a specialist cutter who knows how to do it and it's likely to be ££ to have it done well) - but I didn't like how it felt when I gathered my hair up to put it in a pony tail etc. It felt "wrong" like it was all thin. But this may be what you are after.
