Is there a way to make your hair thinner?

I see lots of products to thicken hair but I need the opposite. I have far too much hair and it just looks shit all the time because it's so thick.

What I want is something low maintenance as I’m entirely incapable of doing anything other than straightening. As that describes “texturising” it makes me suspect styling at home is required?!!

Partake in some good stressful activities like moving house and getting divorced it'll sort you right out

TheGrumpySquirrel · 21/10/2017 06:32

Ahhh, my hairdresser already point cuts my hair.

bananafish81 · 21/10/2017 08:26

@TheGrumpySquirrel I now actually have it close cut with scissors rather than a complete buzz cut, so I look slightly less punkish if I wear my hair up now, than if I wear it up now

With it down you cannot tell at all that I've had it done - it just looks like someone with a normal amount of hair. When actually I've had half my hair taken out from the underneath to remove the weight!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/10/2017 08:28

You can ask for more drastic point cutting, my hairdresser looks like Edward Scissorhands when she's doing mine Grin

bananafish81 · 21/10/2017 08:32

@TheGrumpySquirrel as you can see, even with all the underneath taken out, it still doesn't look particularly thin, but it is normal enough that I can wear it different ways. This was a few months after the first undercut

I envy your perfect waves Envy

bananafish81 · 21/10/2017 08:45

@DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen the hairdresser did them with some GHDs after my cut and colour - no way I'd be able to recreate them at home, regardless of how many YouTube tutorials I watch!!

love the colout and cut banana

undercuts can be done in different section patterns so they don't have to be drastic and I have always scissor over combed on my clients and then use small mini clippers just to tidy up the hairline.

if you're hair is thick I would recommend trying this but you would need an experienced stylist.

if your hair is not thick and just naturally frizzy then I would not recommend. there are different layering techniques to help but "normal" layering will probably make it more bushy. as will point cutting. a good blow dry cream will definitely help. joico smooth cure repair treatment is an absolute dream.

I have thick and frizzy hair. I absolutely hate having my hair point cut as I prefer a heavier shape as my hair is more controlled. take the weight out of the ends and they go whispy and I don't like the look or feel of the cut.

everyone's hair is different and what works for one won't for another. go to a few salons and ask for a consultation. any decent salon would be happy for you to do this.

Rinceoir · 21/10/2017 19:42

Banana hair like yours is what I would love! Currently it’s really long as the weight stops it mushrooming but I don’t like it.

How do you find a hairdresser who will actually give advice on what would suit you? I have no ability to visualise what will suit me. Every time I go I tell the truth- that I hate my hair, find it completely unmanageable and just want something that suits my face and needs nothing more than straighteners to sort it. But that I have no idea what that might be. And they invariably tell me I need it shoulder length with layers (ie a Rachel cut)!

bananafish81 · 22/10/2017 19:36

My undercut is scissor cut now and just used the clippers to tidy up the very back, it's not shaved any more like it was in the photo

This time we've changed the pattern a bit because I want to change the colour, so she's taken it a bit lower so we can do some foils and get the cut and colour working together

@Rinceoir no advice other than to try different salons tbh. I have no real idea what will suit me so most of the time I ask the hairdresser what they'd recommend. I had no idea about an undercut until one suggested it to me! I'm quite laid back about trying new things as I get bored easily and I figure it's hair and will grow out if I don't like it. I really like and trust the salon I go to though -I went there on personal recommendation. Before I had the undercut when I had full head bleach I used to be told to book in for an extra long appointment because there was so much hair and it would take so long! When I had a cut it also ended up taking twice as long as the slot they'd allocated - now there's way less hair it's not an all afternoon jobby!!
