Help - is this dress acceptable for a wedding?

It's a very swish wedding at a fancy country house type place. Bride, bridesmaids and most female guests are late 20s/ early 30s, very attractive, perfect figures, all beautifully groomed and accessoried.

I am not. Well I can trowel makeup on pretty well, and I'm not hideous. I am a fatty though (have definitely crossed over from chubby to fat).

So I have bought this dress. I have something similar so am hoping it will both fit and suit me. Otherwise I am totally up shit creek.

So if it is ok when it arrives...

Is it fine to wear to a fancy wedding?
How would you accessories it - I got the dress in the sale so have a little money to spend on stuff. But I can't even work out how to style my hair let alone what jewelry and shoes to wear!

I just don't want to look too much like a car horse next to all the thoroughbreds.

I would wear simple jewellery with that dress: silver necklace, pearl/silver bracelet. Hair would like nice in an up do- a bun type hairstyle with some curls at the front. Some nice dangly earrings.

For shoes, I would go for simple white/cream low heels.

Because the dress is patterned, that will be the staple in your outfit. You don't need to go overboard on accessories IMO x

YES! I'd do a string of cream/pale peachy pearls and similar colour ballet pumps (but I'm not a heel person, you might be)

Yes it's lovely. But PLEASE leave it as classically accessorised as possible - please don't go down the victory curls and red lipstick route.

I have said it before and again - I hate that anyone over a size 14 gets recommended Lindy bop style stuff and then to go all out with 50s styling too. You don't want to look like a caricature, it's so bad!

Just some nude sandals, hair down, groomed but natural, pearl stud errings, keep it clsssy and elegant, not try too hard.

Don't worry I won't do a whole 50s thing. It wouldn't suit me (red lipstick looks awful on me, makes my teeth look yellowy) and I definitely won't wear kitten heels, I'm too heavy, just end up feeling like I'm balancing on a pin! I have got some cream/ beige court shoes with a block heel...might wear those if they look ok with the colour of the dress.

My hair is longish, will probably wear it down as up dos just show off my fat face. But will try and style it sleekly somehow. Wedding is not til 3, maybe I can get to the hairdresser for a blowout in the morning?! (I can never get enough volume when I do it myself)

Yes, the dress is good, and not summery as pp said, as it has sleeves and the fabric looks heavier than a summer dress.

Wedding is at the end of this month. As a fatty I am generally v warm all the time so its not until this point in the year I can wear sleeves!

I wouldn't wear that colour and pattern at this time of year.

It's lovely - I'm nearly 5ft10 and a large busted size 16ish and that is the sort of style I would gravitate to as well. Personally I would pick out that lovely dark pink or dark blue in the petals and have that as my accessory colour. So I have a dark blue little box clutch, dark blue heels (with flat pumps for later unless my heels are super comfy ones) and then I like to wear a hairband with a small decoration - bow/flower with my hair loosely waved (am no good at doing fancy hair and updos do not suit me). I would then stick to a strand of pearls (I have some that my Mum wore on her wedding day) and pearl earrings. I find by picking accessories that all go with each other or pick out a colour in the dress I feel a lot more put together and therefore more confident. I wouldn't worry about colour and time of year - maybe not sandals though. It is a wedding, nice to have pretty colours.

The reason it looks summery has nothing to do with sleeves; as JoJoSM2 said it is the colour and pattern.

When you say you are fat exactly how fat do you mean?

I am fat and would look like an overstuffed sofa in that dress. I don't think it would be a flattering style or pattern.

Also how old are you?

There is a significant danger of extreme frump factor, especially with strings of pearls as so many are suggesting.

Sorry to be the voice of dissent but being fat and forties myself that dress does have a distinct whiff of 1980s Laura Ashley about it.
