Soap instead of shower gel

Just wanted to say that based on a thread I read on here probably a few months ago, I swapped my shower gel for soap (I think the original thread was about deodorant, as OP felt a bit whiffy not long after showering, but lots of people recommended switching shower gel for soap instead).
Anyway, the difference is remarkable! I went to a stupidly hot soft play with DS at the weekend, where I had to follow him round the bloody playframe for an hour, (which is a whole other thread!), and still felt pretty fresh that evening, which I never would have been before. Same for the mornings, I usually wake up feeling a bit stinky because I seem to get very hot overnight, but no more! I'm just using Simple soap bars, two for £1. Amazing!

Excellent thread.
We've always preferred soap but does anyone have a satisfactory way of dealing with the slivers left when the bar is nearly finished?
It's fine with Pears soap as the sliver fits neatly into the declivity of the new bar but I don't have a solution for other makes of soap.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/10/2017 15:03

Chuck it away and start a new oneGrin

BarchesterFlowers · 13/10/2017 15:44

Dapple I use the slivers on a body brush or one of those puff things. Everyone else does what dame suggested here but I don't tight.

PickAChew · 13/10/2017 16:06

If I leave it to ds1, those slivers are usually pulverised nto a million pieces. Problem solved Hmm

Auldspinster · 13/10/2017 16:25

Grate it and use it for handwashing delicates?

NeedingSolutions · 13/10/2017 16:31

I'm not sure how soap can clog drains thinking about it- if you add water to soap flakes or bits in a bottle,it doesn't solidify as there's so much water

Have you ever come across a manky soapdish that is so full of scum that it's almost like two bars of soap together (soft, mushy, sticky, full of bacteria!)

That's what happens down the drain hole sometimes. I don't know what makes it build up, you'd think the shower water would flush it beautifully. Unfortunately in my house (normal shower drain size) it causes horrendous blockages causing the water to backflows, making the person having a shower stand in a foot bath that won't drain away efficiently until the bullet drain cleaner is used.

BarchesterFlowers · 13/10/2017 16:40

I am not sure that is a very good example - the soap to water ratio is very different in a soap dish to a plug hole/drain.

My soap dish is never manky. It has a drain hole for any water and if it has a soap mark I rinse it as I shower.

Perhaps the type of soap makes a difference.

Orangeplastic · 13/10/2017 17:44

Our shower has always had an issue with blockades, using liquid soap - will be interested to see if it gets any worse now I'm using soap.

anothernextsale · 13/10/2017 17:59

Wow, quite a revelation in our house due to this thread!

Since I swapped to soap I’ve felt fresh all day, skin feels cleaner (if that’s such a thing) and I’ve not once got all hot at work and worried about sweating

SquirrelWatcher · 13/10/2017 18:24

Dame the lemon Tesco one is rather nice, just tried it out ! Might have to sample the Cussons one too.

chocolatespiders · 13/10/2017 18:36

So what's everyone's favourite soap?

Any good ones in tkmax?

I use cidal, pears, dettol and sanex soap but would love a nice lavender or rose soap.

twofloorsup · 13/10/2017 18:48

I'm using coal tar soap as I love how fresh it smells but Pears keeps calling to me when I'm out shopping so I may buy this next.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 13/10/2017 18:51

I like coal tar soap too but just a warning if you live in a hard water area...due to the soap’s colour it will give your bath a lovely orange ring round it!

building2017 · 13/10/2017 19:08

Okay, I'm trying it. Had a shower with Simple soap today (put it in one of those scrubby shower gloves which worked quite nicely actually) and my skin felt quite tight and 'squeaky' at the time but then quite soft afterwards. We'll see!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/10/2017 19:25

Will look forward to the lemon oneSmile

GhoulsFold · 13/10/2017 20:40

Have bought some Simple soap, and washed with soap for the first time in over 20 yrs last night. I have to say I really didn't like the 'squeakiness' and it felt like a waxy residue had been left on my skin. I wasn't convinced it really cut through the greasiness of my skin so I gave a wipe with micellar water afterwards and used an oil free moisturiser.

I'm going to persist with it though, If it ultimately makes me cleaner, fresher for longer and less spotty then I'll be a total born-again soap user!

Ktown · 13/10/2017 20:43

Bar soap is a revelation on blackheads.

MotherofPearl · 13/10/2017 21:16

Is it wrong that I find reading the new posts on this thread every day enormously soothing and comforting? Blush
I love soap and I love reading about soap.

Toooldtobearsed · 13/10/2017 21:24

Can I ask a really stupid question?

How do you manage to wash yourself with soap??

I use the foaming shower gel atm, and would quite like to use soap, but whenever I have tried, i just can't get much lather. What I do generate covers about 3 inches of arm. So, do you use flannels (yuk), scruchie things (yuckier), or some other super implement to whip up some lather?

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/10/2017 21:27

You don't need loads of lather. I just soap my hands and use then to wash myself. Others use flannels/scrunchies and rinse them after use. Nothing yuk about it.

building2017 · 13/10/2017 21:37

I got lather using the scrubby glove, and have also ordered a couple of mesh soap bags from Amazon, partly so I can hang it up and not end up with a load of sludge.

Toooldtobearsed · 13/10/2017 21:54

I am sorry, of course flannels arent yuk, it is more the thought of having to wash them after every shower. I have tried the scrunchie things, but approach them suspiciously after a few washes - just me!
I don't get enough lather with hands alone bore, so will look for scrubby mitt thing 😊

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/10/2017 22:03

It's not like you have to take the flannels down to the River and beat them against a rock ,is it? Bung them in the wash basket omg with everything else Confused

Why are scrunchies yuk?

Just use your hands, presuming that's what you do now with shower gel. Same thing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/10/2017 22:15

**omg=along

wizzywig · 13/10/2017 22:17

Bought these in Zara Home. No idea what the concept behind tying a soap in a muslin is but hey ho
