What did you buy on your 40th birthday?

I'm turning 40 next year - July. Still a long way to go, but thinking of buying my first designer bag. Although I don't really like bags - I like shoes.

What did you buy on your 40th?

A Kitchenaid. Something stylish and beautiful that I had lusted after for a long time, but probably not what you are looking for as you posted in S and B!

whitehandledkitchenknife · 24/09/2017 22:35

I bought a pair of Overcube (now Fly) ankle boots. I spent the day stretching out my legs to admire them, exclaiming "cute boots, cute boots" I still have them 17 years on

ImogenTubbs · 24/09/2017 22:46

I spent almost a grand on a fucking massive party. It was worth it.

Justgivemesomepeace · 24/09/2017 22:47

A pair of Irregular Choice boots.

chocolatespiders · 24/09/2017 22:50

4 nights in Paris!

mamaduckbone · 24/09/2017 22:52

A tent.
That's probably not very helpful is it? Oh, and some lovely flowery Joules wellies.
We went to our first festival as a family - it was fab!

Cheesymonster · 24/09/2017 23:04

Don't buy a bag just cos you feel you should, if they're not your thing. Why not buy a really fab pair of shoes?

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 24/09/2017 23:19

Why not buy a really fab pair of shoes?

I'm not into expensive shoes. Just leather boots, etc. Mid-range. I probably won't buy a really expensive pair of shoes and just admire them from afar....

Now for leather jackets, this one I probably will go for, but my weight keeps changing. I have several BLK DNMs (not super expensive but in the high-price range, at least for me) that I can't wear now coz of weight gain.

Mine is in January! I'm debating what to do.

For my 30th I turned vegetarian.
Stuck to it for almost 10 yrs now...

When i was 30 I bought GHD straighteners with money I got, they lasted 8 yrs.

For my 40th I may do the same, no other pair have lived up to them.

Twofurrycats · 25/09/2017 00:14

I was convinced I would buy myself either some expensive shoes or a mulberry bag. I didn't: went to Florence and saw some fantastic diamond earrings. I still love them.

3wayburger · 25/09/2017 00:49

I went to New York

Justgivemesomepeace · 25/09/2017 09:34

Went to copenhagen

WineBeforeCake · 25/09/2017 09:46

I climbed a mountain so I bought a new rucksack 😏

Floisme · 25/09/2017 09:49

I have NO designer bag at all but wondering if I should get one.
I'm sorry but that sounds bonkers if you're not into bags - and you've said you're not.
You do like shoes and boots. If you don't want expensive, get two midrange pairs.

Or don't buy anything. It's not compulsory and you could treat yourself for your 41st or when your weight stabilises.

I bought fab bed linen. Well, I thought it was fab - White Company, but it actually didn't last very well, it wore out and one night I put my arm through the duvet cover when I was turning over (this was a few years ago and I'm only 49 now - I've never had any other bed linen do anything like that) and I now buy even more fabber bed linen from King Of Cotton.

SerfTerf · 25/09/2017 09:53

Is this people buying themselves presents because? Well why? I've never heard of this.

OutToGetYou · 25/09/2017 11:56

SerfTerf

Well, no idea why anyone else did but I did it because I was single and have very little family so no other fucker was going to buy me a birthday present. I spent my 40th at home on my own. I expect I will spend my 50th similarly next year.

I didn't know I needed a reason though, nor that some internet stranger would later judge me.

SerfTerf · 25/09/2017 11:58

No, that makes sense.

I didn't know if it was something like that or, well, I don't know.

Floisme · 25/09/2017 12:07

I think it is quite a new thing though. I don't think it's judging to notice that and remark on it.
As I've already said, it never occurred to me to buy myself something for my fortieth and I don't know anyone else my age who did. But I've made up for lost time since then Smile

OutToGetYou · 25/09/2017 12:44

Can't be that new, my 40th was nine and a half years ago. But, to be fair, I didn't do it cos it was something anyone else did, I have no idea if people did. I just did it because I wasn't going to get any presents.

Floisme · 25/09/2017 12:53

Mine was 21 years ago so I guess it depends on your definition of new!

I hope you treat yourself to something nice.

DirtyDancing · 25/09/2017 12:59

My big 40 is next year. Weekend in Mykanos and a Chanel handbag for me please. Grin

tattiehat · 25/09/2017 14:03

A pregnancy test ( it was positive)!

QuimJongUn · 25/09/2017 16:48

A Mulberry Bayswater and three slices of cake from Patisserie Valerie. All for me.

Ponks · 25/09/2017 16:57

I have no recollection of my 40th at all (7 years ago).

If there is nothing particular that you want, why not wait until you think of something special? Why waste money on a designer bag when you aren't interested in them?
