AIBU to say that if you're buying a winter coat...

...please could it not be black!
I know, first world problems etc, but when it's dark and cold it makes it even more gloomy when everyone looks like they're at a funeral. Last winter I started counting coats when bored on the tube and it was generally something like 10 black, 2 grey, 2 navy and a khaki. Was there a law I missed that made it illegal to wear colours in winter?

This year bought a grey one and a tweedy one in shades of burgundy
I don't buy black because I just seem to attract every hair or bit of fluff or dust in the vicinity

They are a bit harsh, aren't they? I have 2 and they are navy with tan leather trim and khaki for practicality reasons (and because the khaki one is a Diesel military parka which doesn't come in colours), but I've had some nice jewel tones in the past.

I had a bright purple coat this year and I noticed (in London more than at home, actually) that it really stood out in a sea of black and dark grey. It's a lovely coat but it is more restrictive than a dull one, can't wear it with a red dress for example.

I purposely brought the kids bright coats in winter so I could see them in the playground! Everyone else whet for black

My fav is grey (sorry) I'd wear it in another colour but you can't fine the style in colours

I love a good quality black coat and boots in the winter.
You can add colour with a scarf.

Or a bright polo neck.

I dont do bright coats, unfortunately.

Black, camel, charcoal grey, navy. Gloomy cow, I'm afraid! I do like a nice bright lipstick to lift the winter pallor though.

Mine are silver grey, navy and purple. I find black really boring.

I have red, navy, yellow, black and grey pea coats which I wear either for work or with casuals depending on outfit/mood.

A purple waterproof for riding
Two barbours - green and navy for riding/walking when it's not too wet.

I got a gorgeous camel coat from Zara this season.

I love it so much.

not the fabulous, understated chic look I was going for...

Where I live the priority is a hood and a decent length and waterproof (NOT 'shower resistant' which is useless in the rain).

Why not wear red with purple? It's a classic combo

Totally agree! Colour lifts your mood. I have a lipstick pink winter coat and I get lots of people saying how much they love it.

From a safety point of view colours are better too.

Ah, @Graphista you are right. I bought a beautiful dark green coat a couple of years ago, and it doesn't have a hood. I've lived over on the west side for nearly 20 years, I should have known better. I do still wear the coat, but with a stout hat which makes me look like I'm channeling my inner Miss Marble. It isn't black though, OP.

Mine is navy, heavyweight, with a hood and the toggle closure...I know it has a name but I cannot for the life of me remember now...

Bought it when I was home in Scotland, got caught in a downpour. I went home thinking I'm sure this coat is weighing me down. Got on the scales with my soaking coat on, then hung it in the shower to drip dry and weighed myself again. 9lb difference!!

Irnbru learnt my lesson the hard way when I moved back up 11 years ago! Spent most of first winter arriving at work soaked through with a bust umbrella and sore arms from trying to control the umbrella!

Now every autumn - this kinda time - is time to shop for coat and knee high boots if the previous years are no longer any good.

I have a fake trespass style main coat at the moment. Also have a Mac and biker jacket for dry days which are rare

I have a couple of brightly coloured coats to counteract the fact that most of my clothes are black, so when I go indoors I probably look like I'm off to a funeral a lot of the time PuffinsSitOnMuffins

My favourite brights are a turquoise coat DH bought me and a Kelly green coat (I also have black, navy and grey though!)

Lipstick, as mentioned by Cin3ma, is great for brightening up one's appearance.

I always wear a dark one as my dry cleaning bills would be huge from commuting otherwise. Tube and train grime appears from nowhere. My weekend coat is marginally less depressing.

Unfortunately black is in fashion right now and I think it adds to the magic of Christmas more than bright orange would do for example

Polishes halo. I've got navy, blue, tweed, red x3, and grey. Don't really wear much black and dislike black shoes/bags/coats because so many people have just one cheap black bag/coat/shoes that they then wear all the time. Go for navy or grey if you can only afford a single coat, they look classier than cheap black and go with more things
