AIBU to say that if you're buying a winter coat...

...please could it not be black!
I know, first world problems etc, but when it's dark and cold it makes it even more gloomy when everyone looks like they're at a funeral. Last winter I started counting coats when bored on the tube and it was generally something like 10 black, 2 grey, 2 navy and a khaki. Was there a law I missed that made it illegal to wear colours in winter?

There is a UK based mental health charity that urges people to wear brighter clothing in winter to help allay the 'blues'.

It's hunting season where I live so although I'd prefer charcoal and cocoa brown (boring colors that don't overpower me and go with everything) I do red plaid . Can't stomach orange but that would also be a smart option.

My only black coat is my dog walking winter coat. Otherwise I have a tweed, a brown that's quite red, a white, a plaid (dull colours but nice check pattern), and a moss. coloured coat. I think black is exceptionally practical and boring and I think "pop of colour" scarves look awful. looove my coats!

@angelomysterioso this one is not sunshine yellow, more mustard but it is fitted/flared so perhaps it might hit the spot? www.emmydesign.se/en/webshop/autumn-winter-2017/outerwear-suit-jackets/the-old-hollywood-princess-coat-mustard-pure-wool.html

(I have a fondness for all things yellow so when I read your post, it reminded me of this!)

Love this. I have brown, royal blue, teal (black velvet trim) and heather. My only black outdoor coats are opera ones (so velvet or trimmed with gold soutache etc.)

My thoughts exactly OP
Winter is dull enough here ( in Ireland) without adding to its greyness.
Who dictated that we must wear dark gloomy colours in winter ???

I have a teal coat, in fact 2, both of which are more autumn, one casual, one smart, plus the ubiquitous green parka. The green parka is properly weatherproof, though.

Back in the several winters in a row when we had to do the school run in shin deep snow, walking in the road because the pavements were impassible, I used to put some cheery IKEA high vis vests on us.

I agree, I have a berry coat and a bottle green coat. I always feel like I'm disappearing in a black coat.

Debating this

But it's going to get awfully dirty, isn't it?

I would never wear a bright coat more subdued colours can look more expensive. Sorry I'll be blending in with everyone else.

I don't like bright colours and autumn shades make me look like a corpse. My winter coat is dark grey, not black.

Oh. Unless it's a leather jacket.

I have a stack of coats, and this year bought a royal blue one - it's more for autumn though. I don't have a black one, funnily enough, but do have a navy pea-coat.

I have a purple and a red coat, both lovely. Last year I bought a beautiful grey Vera wang coat from TKMaxx. Was a bargain, so I had to really. I liked the idea of a neutral because I could wear pretty much any colour hat and scarf. What I actually wore was the ancient red one. Colour wins every time Smile

I have a grey sensible coat, but my beautiful best wool coat is black. I love it, I always feel so glamorous in it. It's got quite a full skirt and a big standup collar. I hardly ever get to wear it! but I do love it.

I have coats in navy, burgundy, blue polkadot, green, blue-grey, magenta and floral. I don't generally wear a lot of black, but I do still have 2 black coats - a faux fur and a leather jacket. Grin

If you're going to just nip across the road in a black winter coat, be mindful of the fact it's really hard for drivers to see you in the winter darkness, no matter how much light there is from other cars, street lamps etc. Please stick to designated crossings when they are available!

I've always found black coats on women very ugly. Generally any solid colour unless it is camel/a very nice green looks a bit tired.
