AIBU to say that if you're buying a winter coat...

...please could it not be black!
I know, first world problems etc, but when it's dark and cold it makes it even more gloomy when everyone looks like they're at a funeral. Last winter I started counting coats when bored on the tube and it was generally something like 10 black, 2 grey, 2 navy and a khaki. Was there a law I missed that made it illegal to wear colours in winter?

I have a red winter coat and wear it all the time. The only time I have felt it was particularly unusual was on a visit to London when it seemed as though everyone else was wearing black, dark navy or dark grey and I stuck out like a sore thumb. At home in Scotland lots of people wear coloured coats.

I have a long black wool coat for years.
At times it seemed to swamp me . (No longer I doubt) But last year I saw a lovely fitted one, modest price and treated myself to one and dh bought me the same coat for Christmas in a different colour. I was happy with that. One is blue/black and the other is grey/black. I have an ancient red and black jacket which looks like new despite being almost 20 years old. I have a black raincoat and a beige one both from m&s

I agree!! All I see on the High Street is black, grey, navy, beige and khaki. JFC, it's depressing AF.

My coats are pale blue, coral, orange and lime green.

cheminotte · 21/09/2017 20:55

No black coats here! Was very cold at a funeral in Feb though as I left my purple coat in the car.
I also only own colourful umbrellas for the same reason.

cheminotte · 21/09/2017 20:55

River Island have a red coat on sale.

Littlelondoner · 21/09/2017 21:03

New buys this year include red, 2x mustard yellow, orange& browm checks, and tan.

I have never been one for black coats if I am honnest. They are practical though. I find myself having to buy a few coats if I go for colours to blend in better with clothes in wardrobe.

CantChoose · 21/09/2017 21:07

Mine is red but there are quite a few outfits I can't wear it with which I suppose is why people go for black.

Ttbb · 21/09/2017 21:10

I've always found black coats on women very ugly. Generally any solid colour unless it is camel/a very nice green looks a bit tired.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/09/2017 21:11

If you're going to just nip across the road in a black winter coat, be mindful of the fact it's really hard for drivers to see you in the winter darkness, no matter how much light there is from other cars, street lamps etc. Please stick to designated crossings when they are available!

Goth so all mine bar 1 random red tartan coat are black but they are lacy or furry and have funky buttons so at least ain't dull

SesameSparkle · 21/09/2017 21:27

I have coats in navy, burgundy, blue polkadot, green, blue-grey, magenta and floral. I don't generally wear a lot of black, but I do still have 2 black coats - a faux fur and a leather jacket. Grin

Spudlet · 21/09/2017 21:32

I have a grey sensible coat, but my beautiful best wool coat is black. I love it, I always feel so glamorous in it. It's got quite a full skirt and a big standup collar. I hardly ever get to wear it! but I do love it.

mimiasovitch · 21/09/2017 22:04

I have a purple and a red coat, both lovely. Last year I bought a beautiful grey Vera wang coat from TKMaxx. Was a bargain, so I had to really. I liked the idea of a neutral because I could wear pretty much any colour hat and scarf. What I actually wore was the ancient red one. Colour wins every time Smile

Judydreamsofhorses · 21/09/2017 22:36

I have a stack of coats, and this year bought a royal blue one - it's more for autumn though. I don't have a black one, funnily enough, but do have a navy pea-coat.

EnidButton · 21/09/2017 22:48

Yanbu!

EnidButton · 21/09/2017 22:50

Oh. Unless it's a leather jacket.

poppym12 · 21/09/2017 23:05

I don't like bright colours and autumn shades make me look like a corpse. My winter coat is dark grey, not black.

DarthMaiden · 21/09/2017 23:06

Well mine is grey ;-)

AngeloMysterioso · 22/09/2017 00:44

I dream of finding a lovely sunshine yellow fit and flare winter coat. Haven't found one yet but the search continues!

ZaraW · 22/09/2017 05:55

I would never wear a bright coat more subdued colours can look more expensive. Sorry I'll be blending in with everyone else.

MrsWhirly · 22/09/2017 06:08

I just brought a camel coloured one. Not too exciting but not black. X

happyinherts · 22/09/2017 22:00

Debating this

But it's going to get awfully dirty, isn't it?

Tameagobairanois · 22/09/2017 22:05

I agree, I have a berry coat and a bottle green coat. I always feel like I'm disappearing in a black coat.

PickAChew · 22/09/2017 22:07

I have a teal coat, in fact 2, both of which are more autumn, one casual, one smart, plus the ubiquitous green parka. The green parka is properly weatherproof, though.

Back in the several winters in a row when we had to do the school run in shin deep snow, walking in the road because the pavements were impassible, I used to put some cheery IKEA high vis vests on us.
