Red main coat?

Piccolino2 · 13/09/2017 10:53

Would I be crazy to get a red coat as my main (and only stylish) coat?

I'm a spring so looking at chocolate brown (bit boring), grey (good option), bright navy (not always easy to find) otherwise.

I want one brilliant quality coat but will I find this doesn't work or that I regret it???

Thinking it will look so cheery on full days but then again....

Thoughts?

Red main coat?

I would get tired of red really quickly. I suggest the grey.

Maudlinmaud · 13/09/2017 11:03

Red will be massive this season. So I'm told Blush I would so buy it, you can always use it as a frock coat in years to come. Red is lovely op.

Uumellmahaye · 13/09/2017 11:10

I love that coat! I'm an hourglass winter and it's just what I have been looking for! It's in my basket - thank you OP!

I'm sure you will look wonderful in it - why not order both and try on at home and see what you think?

vlooby · 13/09/2017 11:13

People will probably think this is tatty, but I've had the same red winter coat for over 10 years. Was expensive at the time but is classic and i always get compliments on it. Do it!

BumbleNova · 13/09/2017 11:15

I have been having the exact same dilemma! I love that coat but I think its a one season only colour. its beautiful but so strong. for that price I want at least 5 years wear. I think the grey is too pale and will show marks very quickly. If only they did it in any other colour! I'm doing red in knitwear instead.

nickEcave · 13/09/2017 11:59

I've worn a red coat as my main winter coat for the last 3 years. I am a bit worried that since red is "the" colour for this year my coat is going to look dated and unfashionable next year!

OldLagNewName · 13/09/2017 12:09

I bought a red main coat last year and it's been great so far, but I do love red very much indeed, so I don't care too much about how it looks to other people. I did find that I needed new gloves, scarf, hat, bag etc. as they were previously red to go with my old black coat (can't manage without some red on me somewhere!) so accessories would be my only warning. But if yours were neutral to start with, that's fine.

drspouse · 13/09/2017 12:13

I would but I am into dramatic!

I had a cream raincoat with poppies for ages as my summer raincoat. It became less waterproof, and was lined so I couldn't do the re-washing thing, but I loved it and got loads of compliments on rainy summer days.

So I'd go for red AND patterned.

(I just got this to replace the red and white coat, now I will have to get some purple trousers to go under it as my red ones clash.)

Nettletheelf · 13/09/2017 12:15

It's a beautiful colour but my own adventures in coats have resulted in my only buying grey, navy, khaki or black these days. That's because you can wear more stuff with them and they are easier to accessorise. You couldn't really wear a green scarf with a red coat, for example.

I had a lovely bright pink coat from Karen Millen once but it was a sod to match with things.

Also, if you have a distinctive coloured coat, people remember it and that's not always a good thing. You know, "here's Piccolino in that red coat".

Branleuse · 13/09/2017 12:23

its lovely.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 13/09/2017 12:25

drsprouse, dry cleaners used to rewaterproof trench coats and rain macs, maybe they still do, it might be worth asking?

hippadoppaloppagorillapig · 13/09/2017 13:13

I had a red main coat once, I loved it. I'd absolutely go with the one you posted.

Maria1982 · 13/09/2017 13:14

Do it! I've had a lovely red coat from Hobbs as my main coat for 3 years.

I get a number of compliments from people telling me how nice it is to see something cheerful!

Maria1982 · 13/09/2017 13:17

PS your choice looks great

CountFosco · 13/09/2017 13:24

I have three red coats! One is my rain coat so needs to be cheerful, I have one good wool coat that is a pinkier red, not worn so much recently because it feels slightly dated shapewise. Need to work out if I can get it altered. But my third one is a beautiful red woolen jacket that was my main coat when Mum bought it for me 20 odd years ago and so was worn every day for a few years then fashion changed and it say in my wardrobe for a while until last year when I then wore it lots again. Looking forward to wearing it lots this year again. I'll never get rid of it now.

I think if your wardrobe is fairly neutral or you wear a lot of reds/purple/pinks then a red coat works really well.

CantChoose · 13/09/2017 17:59

I have a red winter coat :) there are some outfits it just doesn't work with but as long you dress fairly neutrally it should be fine. I wear a lot if purple and look like I'm channeling a rainbow on occasion :/

FreiasBathtub · 13/09/2017 18:28

I've done it! Despite my mother's reaction on first seeing my beautiful red wool coat 'but Freias, what will you wear to funerals?' Happily that problem did not arise during the 4 winters my coat was in service. Only stopped wearing it due to having a kid and hence newfound appreciation for hoods. That Reiss coat is gorgeous and a classic cut and I strongly encourage you to go for it!

Maria1982 · 13/09/2017 18:37

freias Your mum's reaction made me laugh! I never got around to chucking out my old black coat so that's me covered for that unpleasant eventuality ...

Oldraver · 13/09/2017 18:39

I only got rid of my red coat last year as the fabric had seen better days..but miss it as the fit was lovely.

Go for the red...way too much navy and black around I do have a black coat as well

Oh...and why on earth can you not wear a green scarf with red ? surely they are traditional go with colours

lindyloo57 · 13/09/2017 18:50

i got in the zara sale, the red long jacket, i love it.

CountFosco · 13/09/2017 18:56

Oh no, that reminds me. I did actually have to go to a funeral in my pinkish red coat because I didn't have a dark coat. I did feel a bit awkward TBH but no-one said anything. After that I made sure I always have something smart in sombre colours.

InigoTaran · 13/09/2017 19:01

Its a beautiful coat and yes i know red is in this season, but I think it's one of those colours that is classic so it will never go out of style. To me, a coat is an investment piece and the style and quality is the most important thing. I have a long, camel fitted coat I got in a sale in House of Fraser ten years ago and I still wear it!

Shenanagins · 13/09/2017 20:29

Love it! I always go for a bright winter coat as it's so dark and miserable otherwise.

Nettletheelf · 13/09/2017 21:30

Yeah, Oldraver, the jesters' guild recommend that particular combo!

Madeyemoodysmum · 13/09/2017 21:41

Dh bought me a red coat in a very similar style 10 years ago. I still wear it and delighted its now on trend again.
