When my bag gets messy I buy a new one

Does anyone else do this?

I have a gorgeous black leather coach tote (never spent that much before) and I have used it every day for three years. It needs a good clearout through all the pockets and it is quite gross at the bottom eg crumbs and something sticky. I can't face cleaning it so I am considering chucking it and buying a whole new bag. Is that bad?

Yes!
It sounds like a real waste! Just start with mild cleaning wipes and see how you get on. If the lining is really bad your local dry cleaner may be able to re-line it for you quite cheaply.

I think you have the perfect excuse to buy another posh new bag.

Chuck it out and treat yourself to another. I would!

OnlyRose · 09/09/2017 11:13

Yes, it's bad - what a waste! Just get on with it and clean the bag.

Iknowit · 09/09/2017 11:14

If it was a cheap thing I would definitely chuck it. I am only hesitating as it cost a lot.

I'll send you my address and you can chuck it out my way.
If it was a cheapie bag then yep throw away but something this expensive, not a chance.

Liadan · 09/09/2017 12:55

I buy a bag from Primark twice a year and do tend to just throw it out when it gets icky.... But it's cheap so I don't mind.... There's no way I could bring myself to throw out an expensive bag like that.... There must be someway of cleaning the lining....

MilkGoatee · 09/09/2017 12:58

Just buy Kipling bags from now on. For one, they're probably not as dear as Coach, second, they're the best when it comes to useful and usable compartments, and third - you can just chuck (most of them) in the washing machine!

Aridane · 09/09/2017 13:00

There must be some online bag cleaning service- send it there for a spring clean

NameChanger22 · 09/09/2017 13:03

It sounds really lazy to me. It will only take you 15 minutes. Is your time worth that much?

TwigTheWonderKid · 09/09/2017 13:15

When you say "throw it away" you do mean donate it to a charity shop don't you? Not actually putting it in the dustbin?

MumBod · 09/09/2017 13:19

You used to be able to get bag liners that you put all your crap stuff in, then you just swapped them from bag to bag.

Not the sort of thing I'd be organised enough to use, but if it saves buying a new bag...

burnishedsilver · 09/09/2017 14:06

By all means get a new bag but don't throw out the old one.

Eolian · 09/09/2017 14:07

What a waste!

Tiddlywinks63 · 09/09/2017 14:13

I can't imagine ever having enough money to buy a Coach bag, let alone treat it as a disposable object because I'm too lazy to clean it or look after it!
How the other half live..........
😳

HolgerDanske · 09/09/2017 14:39

Apparently you can actually wash leather bags, so as you're going to get rid of it anyway, you might as well chuck it into the machine and see what happens.

Buy a second one, of course - just because it's lovely to have a nice, new bag, and that way you will have a choice of two - but you might as well see if you can rescue the old one too!

userofthiswebsite · 09/09/2017 14:41

Aw yeah handbags get icky don't they. I clean mine out every 6months usually. Remove everything, wet wipe it down, then vacuum my bag and wet wipe it down and put all stuff bag.
But
If it had gone gross and sticky, for sure get a new bag.

Iknowit · 09/09/2017 15:47

It's not that disposable as I have used it literally everyday for three years!

My bags last several years. I clean regularly but accept they get a bit tatty. My real leather one looks better aged.

I can't believe people buy and then put them in landfill a few months later Hmm (assuming they're not taking them to charity shop).

Serenaballerina37 · 09/09/2017 15:54

I love chucking out old stuff (eg donating to charity) nearly as much as I love buying new so if the handbag no longer 'sparked any joy', and I could afford to, then I would donate to charity and buy a new one - life is too short!

WillowWeeping · 09/09/2017 15:57

I chuck them because it's never just the inside when you've used it regularly for a couple of years. The handles get worn, corners bashed and they start to look very tired.

If they're really expensive then I tend to hang on to them without using for a little while before the guilt subsides and then they go in the bin

Serenaballerina37 · 09/09/2017 16:00

Ps I would love to stumble upon a coach handbag in a charity shop!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 09/09/2017 16:19

I have a beautiful jaeger leather bag - my daughter left a bag of those gross bright blue ball sweet things in the bottom...marinated for a week or so and there was a thick blue sugar layer stuck to the lining of the bag. I chiselled it out and was going to throw it, but tried the washing machine, on 30 I think with a silk/wool detergent. Hung to dry. Came out beautifully, completely as new. So try that first before you chuck it.

Liadain · 09/09/2017 16:26

I wouldn't throw it out if it was just a bit gross inside. If there's damage to the corners etc then maybe.

Side note: I was really taken aback to see another Liada(i)n Grin I was trying to work out had I posted already!

chanie44 · 09/09/2017 16:55

It sounds like you are bored of the bag and would like a new one. Buy a new bag - you've had a good run with the coach bag. Clean the worst of the much in the coach bag and put it in your cupboard - I bet you'll want to use it again in the future and you can clean it properly then.

OP, I've been using primary handbag inserts in my bags for about a year now and they do help protect the lining from crumbs and mess.
