Hairdressers: what shampoo do you use?

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 11/08/2017 13:27

Hello there
I recently had blonde highlights put in and bought (kerching) "anti-yellow" shampoo and conditioner from the salon. (Will be able to tell you brand later, am currently away but killing time until it stops raining!) It appears to be no different to the considerably cheaper swiss o par purple shampoos.
No noticeable "salon effect" iyswim and I won't buy it again. Sad it was ludriculously expensive for me £30 for two bottles but maybe you stylish lovelies would think it was an investment and I am cheap. you would be correct on the latter
So...

  1. If you are a hairdresser yourself what do you use on your own hair?
  2. What is your opinion on the salon products you sell?
  3. What is the cheapest brand you would use yourself/recommend?
  4. What supermarket brands would you go out of your way to avoid?
  5. Is there truth in the anti-dandruffs drying out scalp so worsening dandruff theory/all in ones screwing up your hair?

First time on style+beauty. Please be gentle Brew
Oh and I know I asked for hairdressers' input but any classy stylish Beckys with the good hair Wink what do you use/what's the maximum you would pay for a hair product? (Those who can afford a weekly salon blow dry need not reply EnvyGrin)

Thanks in advance Flowers

Oooh, I'd like to know too. I've been using Bedhead for years and occasionally dabble with something else. I need some mire shampoo soon so I hope you get some answers!

koalab · 13/08/2017 16:46

More not mire Grin

ReinettePompadour · 13/08/2017 16:50

My hairdresser claims to only use baby shampoo once a week and just water (warm water then finish with cool water to make it shine) the rest of the time. I'm not sure if thats entirely true as her hair looks gorgeous and I'm convinced if it were true she wouldn't try and sell me the stupidly expensive stuff when I get my hair cut but it might be correct I guess. I'm certain she's a big fat liar

ILikeThatSong123 · 13/08/2017 16:51

My friend who is a scientist (chemistry) makes industrial hair care products herself, namely various shampoo and conditioner and hair gel types. She (her dad) markets them to hairdressers on bulk. She created the formula herself. She gave me few bottles as gift (or as a human guinea pig) and as far as i can tell, the products are okay but nothing special.

High end hairdressers use different quality products I'm sure.

selfishcrab · 13/08/2017 16:56

I use touch of silver shampoo and a supermarket conditioner. Hair is coloured very light blonde tint with a few high-lights and in great condition.
Was a stylist/salon owner for 30 ish years.
I don't like wasting my money!

HeadfirstForHalos · 13/08/2017 16:59

I don't know about hairdressers but I use touch of silver shampoo too and my hair is in good condition (despite bleaching and colouring it myself)

HeadfirstForHalos · 13/08/2017 17:00

Mine is ash blonde btw

notevernotnevernotnohow · 13/08/2017 17:00

This is chat, no style and beauty.

acornsandnuts · 13/08/2017 17:04

I would love to know too. I find no difference from high end to mid range.

notevernotnevernotnohow Hmm thread placement police?

muggymum · 13/08/2017 17:04

Moroccan oil through and through

Ridingthegravytrain · 13/08/2017 17:07

When I was bleached white blonde I used touch of silver and it was no worse than the more expensive brands

I have used joico and redken in the past and both have left my hair a little softer than regular brands but not enough to justify the cost.

brokenshoes · 13/08/2017 17:08

acornsandnuts - the OP said "First time on style+beauty. Please be gentle", so looks like she posted here by mistake, hence notevernotnever mentioning it.

ggirl · 13/08/2017 17:16

Hairdressers are the one profession Mumsnet is particularly short of .

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 13/08/2017 17:18

Hello koala and others, bless you for replying: I posted on Friday in style and beauty but got no replies so asked mnhq to move it to chat today for more traffic because I was feeling unpopular Wink
The branded stuff I paid out for was Glynt swiss formula mangala and I cannot see any real difference.

So I just googled Moroccan oil...my eyes are watering Grin
I do have lots of baby shampoo left as it happens mme de pompadour but also suspect your friend is fibbing Wink

Thank you crab. As an ex stylist are there any products you'd avoid like the plague? (PM if you would rather not say on a forum). Although no idea how that works, it's not libellous to say a product wasn't worth the price is it? Confused

I once reached for the shampoo and found my daughter had taken it. I cannot stand wet hair dripping so I grabbed the nearest bottle of something, lavender baby bubble bath that I use on my pug.

My hair looked and felt exactly the same as the expensive brands I had always used.

I have experimented since, even using fairy liquid and my hair once dried looks clean shiny and has body.

I'm a bit of a product snob but I now buy shampoo based on if I like the smell of it and do not care if it is as cheap as chips!!!

Yerroblemom1923 · 13/08/2017 17:33

Why are there no hairdressers on MN??

LittlePear91 · 13/08/2017 17:34

I'm a hairdresser 🙋🏻 and I use L'Oreal professional shampoos. You can buy them from salons but I'm almost certain they would be cheaper from Sally's (stores in most cities and online). I LOVE L'Oréal, and the blue shampoo they do is amazing. They also do one for blonde hair (the name of which escapes me). I buy the litre bottles of shampoo and conditioner which lasts aaaaages, and you use them with a pump (which gives you the perfect amount in one pump- means less waste).

You should probably only need to use blue shampoo every 3-4 washes to avoid a bluey tinge.

I also absolutely love Label.M (their organic range smells incredible) but they're only available on the Label.M website or in approved salons (beware of fakes online!) and they're a bit more pricey than L'Oréal.

Wellysocksbox · 13/08/2017 17:37

Is this going to end up in the Daily Fail?

Craiconwithit · 13/08/2017 17:42

Hairdresser here.
Baby shampoo is as good as washing up liquid (shite in other words!)
It's pH balanced for your tear ducts ('no tears' formula) so completely the wrong pH for your hair.
The best purple shampoo I've tried recently is a new one from Osmo called Super Silver no yellow shampoo. It's great for toning out yellow blonde hair but won't do much if you have more orangey tones.
It does contain a lot of violet pigment so beware. If you over do it, just use a deep cleansing shampoo to remove excess tone.

LittlePear91 · 13/08/2017 17:44

Ps. The anti dandruff shampoos tend to just have a stronger detergent in them since dandruff is just an over production of skin cells.

I'm not particular about the shampoo I use necessarily, I use L'Oréal because I feel like it's the best for my hair; the same might not be true for other people, and there's nothing wrong with supermarket brands. I'm sure many of them are made in the same places.
