Hairdressers: what shampoo do you use?

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 11/08/2017 13:27

Hello there
I recently had blonde highlights put in and bought (kerching) "anti-yellow" shampoo and conditioner from the salon. (Will be able to tell you brand later, am currently away but killing time until it stops raining!) It appears to be no different to the considerably cheaper swiss o par purple shampoos.
No noticeable "salon effect" iyswim and I won't buy it again. Sad it was ludriculously expensive for me £30 for two bottles but maybe you stylish lovelies would think it was an investment and I am cheap. you would be correct on the latter
So...

  1. If you are a hairdresser yourself what do you use on your own hair?
  2. What is your opinion on the salon products you sell?
  3. What is the cheapest brand you would use yourself/recommend?
  4. What supermarket brands would you go out of your way to avoid?
  5. Is there truth in the anti-dandruffs drying out scalp so worsening dandruff theory/all in ones screwing up your hair?

First time on style+beauty. Please be gentle Brew
Oh and I know I asked for hairdressers' input but any classy stylish Beckys with the good hair Wink what do you use/what's the maximum you would pay for a hair product? (Those who can afford a weekly salon blow dry need not reply EnvyGrin)

Thanks in advance Flowers

trained as a hairdresser and have many hairdresser friends - kerastase is recommended time and time again even by the salons that dont stock it.

I have used their ciment products and was impressed.

I am a huge lover of morrocan oil. if you're not a fan of the price you can get a small glimmer spray for about £10 which lasts a while and smells unbelieveable.

i like the 0% sillicon ones the herbal essences is good for a cheap one.

gingerbreadmam · 13/08/2017 17:48

oh and fudge purple shampoo gets good ratings on here.

spankhurst · 13/08/2017 17:53

Not a hairdresser but old, so have used hundreds of shampoos over the years. There's beggar all difference between most brands, IMO. My hair is liking my currect silicone and sulphate free regime (Dr Organic) but does perfectly well with any decent supermarket stuff.

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 13/08/2017 17:56

^ I have to say 'resurrection style dust' sounds exciting I also like the sound of hair soufflé.
The shampoo I bought was a pump. I didn't realize one pump was the perfect amount pear Blush ah well, I know now!

I miss vo5 red apple shampoo from when I was a child.

My hairdresser (national award winning colourist) recommends A Touch of Silver.

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 13/08/2017 18:09

Christ welly I hope not. Hmm. Fuck off daily mail fuckers and go and do some real journalism. I have not yet been name checked in their rag and whilst I am a sleb twaddler am not about to start now. Wink
Thank you for the recommendations. Flowers I am tight but could afford a glimmer spray. I have also found a touch of silver on amazon as am not in the UK (assuming touch of silver/pro-voke are the real deal).

Yes PP, TOS/Pro-Voke is the same.

Orangebird69 · 13/08/2017 18:11

OP, not PP 🙄

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 13/08/2017 18:13

Thanks orange (have Charlotte Coleman's tresses in my head now)

I ran out of my usual shampoo (Swarzkopf Gliss) and used some liquid hand soap instead. Argh big mistake. My hair went horrible and straw like. I stopped using the Gliss shampoo a few months ago as it took so long to rinse out and it seemed to leave an oily sheen on my hair. My hair is quite dry but I don't want it to look greasy. I now use Dove everyday care, which is really nice. It rinses out in half the time and leaves my hair looking good. And I can get it in Poundland!

HeadfirstForHalos · 13/08/2017 18:20

Yes, it's pro-voke. There are 2 different shampoos, one for regular use and one which has "brightening" on the bottle (and it has less in) which is for occasional use.

Every few washes I wash with a normal shampoo and conditioner (currently Aussie moisturising) to avoid build up.

MrsPinkCock · 13/08/2017 18:31

I love the Alterna Caviar products. Smell lush and leave your hair lovely and soft.

Expensive though.

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 13/08/2017 18:35

Do any of you mind me having this moved back to style and beauty so I can keep the thread for future reference, it will disappear in chat.
Thx

Can anyone recommend a shampoo and conditioner for really fine/limp hair? I've used Aveda's Invati before but not really convinced it's worth the £££ (plus it stained my nails when I wore pale colour nail polish!). Been on Label.M thickening shampoo and conditioner too but wondering if it's worth a change? My big bottles are about to run out.

Blackandpurple · 13/08/2017 19:47

I use Tigi Bedhead for coloured hair. But going to change ti the Tigi Catwalk Oatmeal and Honey soon. Love the Rock curls amplifier from them.

Kez0777 · 13/08/2017 20:07

Label.M has 15% off on look fantastic making it quite reasonable. I use Kevin Murphy but it's so expensive so I've ordered some label.M travel sizes to try Smile

ChickenVindaloo2 · 13/08/2017 20:12

Great thread. I am a big believer in using own brand products where possible but something feels wrong about using cheapo shampoo on my hair which is one of my better features.

(I am one of those ones with long, thick, swooshy-if-I-blow-dry-it hair, which is highlighted)

I buy Loreal Professional from the Sally's hairdressing shop. I'm just trying theiir new silicone-free range for the first time so will try and remember to report back. I understand it's basically the same as Kerastase.

Side tip - I once tried coconut oil on my hair - big mistake - took about 4 washes to get it out again.

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 13/08/2017 20:16

Have asked to move back to S+B, hope that's okay Flowers
Are argan oil products the big deal they've been made out to be or just good PR and me watching the apprentice

OP posts:
ChickenVindaloo2 · 13/08/2017 20:20

Yeah, move back to S&B so we can refer back. Grin

Bonbonchance · 13/08/2017 20:34

My hairdresser recommends using a decent shampoo but doesn't need to be a salon expensive one necessarily (& he doesn't push any brand/sales). He does say Tres semme is one to avoid as it's very drying & it's cheap for a reason! Other than that using one for your hair e.g. I use one specifically for red coloured hair.

Crumbs1 · 13/08/2017 20:40

Having spent a fortune on all sorts of concoctions for myself and the girls over the years we have finally found a shampoo and conditioner that is significantly better than any others. It is Boots own brand at 75p a bottle and it is amazing.

Therealslimshady1 · 13/08/2017 20:48

For fine hair, the best thing to use is a shampoo that cleanses well (removes build up of silicon/oil etc). The best for this is Aussie Mega shampoo. Leaves your hair clean.

You can then add a bit of leave in conditioner to ends (just a drop!) And give the roots a bit of lift with a tiny bit of spray (bumble and bumble good imo)

On days where I feel flush, I buy Kerastase elixer ultime, just for the smell (it is a lot more nourishing, great for after pool use), but Aussie Mega for every day is top, my hairdresser always says my hair (fine) is in good condition and does not try to flog me salon stuff!

Therealslimshady1 · 13/08/2017 20:51

Moroccanoil mainly silicon, so amazing instant effect....because hair coated in silicon, but no real long term improvement of hair condition.

Veterinari · 13/08/2017 20:56

Body shop banana shampoo and conditioner- no silicones so no coating :)

PrettyGreyEyes · 13/08/2017 20:56

MoveOnTheCards

Charles Worthington body & volume shampoo & conditioner works best on my fine straight hilighted hair. bloody expensive though.
